Man I'd LOVE to make a find like that Proto workstation Jaz! That is IMO just about the perfect layout. full width deep for the sockets and whatnot, 4 levels of shallow for the flat stuff, What's not to like?

What is the depth front to rear? 18"? More?

There is always HF Outlaw. :badteeth: I'm pretty sure it is ~42" x 18" deep. It is pretty much a HF box but with a different drawer layout.

Harbor freight box, mostly Craftsman tools minus the dewalt stuff and a few sheet metal tools. Not bad for a home box, I get a lot done with it. Have a lot more drawers full but could only upload a certain number of pics.

Actually it's 23" deep (I looked it up), Not sure of the COO. I like the build quality I've seen in the HF boxes, I do not like the drawer layout, and after build quality, drawer layout is paramount...

Where? According to the actual proto site, it is a 41" x 18" deep box. And I want to say Mexico on the COO, possibly canada, not real familiar with their newer boxes though so not sure on that one.

That proto box is the same box Mac offered per 97ish. It is 40 x18 and interesting construction. It is basically three boxes put together. I'm pretty sure the box was made in Canada by beach. This box predates the current 40" box from either Mac or proto.

I vote we get a real life measurement, That way we (I) know... At 18 I'd have to think about it. at 23 I'm out looking hard...

Say, do you know if the drawers are modular? Can you take one of the deep drawers and swap it with a couple of shallow drawers? I ask because an ideal setup for me would e two narrows, a deeper one then back to shallow. (Sockets ratchets and extensions in the top full width, wrenches in a shallow, drivers in a shallow, pliers in a deeper one and then lesser used tools below...

T'would be awesome!

The drawer is only about 3 inches longer then the 14" pipe wrench ;)

Proto Box in my post.

They are all 16" deep. Friction slides and the drawers are not interchangeable.

The top drawer is 38" x 16"

Left sides are 23" x 16"

Right sides are 11" x 16"

Outlaw,
should we be expecting to see your patent for a perfect toolbox now that you know the measurements and drawer placement that works perfectly for you and probably a lot of the rest of us???

I can't imagine 18" being perfect for too many people. That's hardly half of a real tool box

in a prior post of Outlaw's he was hoping it was a 23 incher which is what I was thinking he should patent. the 18 was not what he hoped for and I don't think you could use either. the basic design with some tweaks and we all probably have our own version of what works best for us.

OK, so the box IS 18" overall. Darn...

Thanks for checking!

That is why I always go to the manufactures site to check specs. Many a times I have seen mis information on large retail sites particularly Amazon. Not saying the manufacture will always be 100%, but I will always trust their site over a 3rd party.

WTF, do you mean by a "real tool box" so you are saying that anyone that works out of a 18" tool box is not using a real box? Where is this definition of real tool box published? I'd like to read it over.

Just like anything they have their uses. For one, their rather limited depth allows more floor space in narrow spaces.

Perfect for who? I like to have more shallow drawers for things like wrenches and drivers; others prefer deep drawers... :dunno:

The Proto box from the front is close. I'd like to see one grow to 44 tall and 44 wide and 24 deep overall. add two more shallow drawers, or one more mid drawer, the bottom deep drawer might need to be made a touch shallower to accommodate, or the bottom framing changed as with the added depth front to rear, you could have a frame skirt partly cover the casters and still not hit them.

I'd like all the drawer heights setup so they were completely modular as to position. This is not rocket science, the main frame 19" rack folks figured that out decades ago.

You would have a 4-1/2 or so depth full width drawer on top w/double slides, and stiffeners to keep the bottom from flexing. The rest about like you see them now, with the wide drawers a bit wider soaking up the extra inches. If a person wanted they could custom order any drawer configuration they desired so long as the total filled the vertical space. The deep drawer would get two slides each side by default, the rest, except for the shallows, could also get double slides as an option.

The problem the tool box manufactures have is their history with the old standard drawer sizes from the older designed tool boxes. If they make a two bay, what do they do? Take the drawers from a 26, and go two bays wide, or the drawers from a 26 and something less than a 20, and go two bays, The only thing new is the full width drawer...

To get something truly flexible requires a clean sheet approach, and a willingness to make some new tooling to get the thing to work.

Patent it? You can't; every concept I've described other than the abandonment of the std widths has already been, and gone one way or another.

I actually started drafting plans for this a year or so ago, but got busy with other things in life, and it would have been an academic exercise anyhow... 15 years ago I could have worked out the drawings and built this as a one off at an old friend's sheet metal shop, but he's passed away and I have no easy access to the required tools anymore.

I am attaching some pictures of my main tool box. It is a three part CRAFTSMAN cabinet, bought new in 1991. The only upgrade to the cabinet was 4 NEW roller bearing castors that I installed right after buying it. Now as far as the contents, it is mostly Craftsman from the same era, along with other mainly US made tools, that I collected along the way. This box has traveled the world with me, and for the last 15 years or so, it resides in GREECE out of all places. It has certainly served me well, over these years, and I get masive pleasure out of using its contents. Happy NEW YEAR to everyone, and thanx for looking.

Toolmaniac,
I saw all your vises on the Vise Thread and you had a nice old US made Wilton and now you are posting a nice collection of Craftsman and you live in Greece. man those tools have some stories to tell if they could only speak. again welcome to GJ and that's a nice assortment of old tools you've collected that probably get the job done.

Outlaw,
is there ever a perfect toolbox, vise or tool? we are all on the search for something better and some of GJ members are actually able to make what they want like you are. i'm guessing you would need a warehouse or two to house all the tools that you own so one tool box is probably not a perfect fit for you or most of the GJ members. some of the guys are pretty creative about adding on to their tool boxes though.

Happy New year to all

Absolutely correct, It's always a compromise for tool storage, and this would be an ideal primary box for me and allow some consolidation of what I have.

Currently I own 18 top boxes (most are Kennedy 520 sized, but a few are full size) 4 intermediates, and 11 rollers (or equivalent), some are converted to tool stands and my welding station. plus there is a bunch of carry boxes with whatever in them.

One older Snap-on stack is empty, and I'm indecisive as to whether to sell it or use it and reorganize again... :dunno:

But what I described above would come close for me...

Toolmaniac, I have those same exact socket sets from Stanley and Campbell. I love the ratchets, and the sockets were made very well. Looking for a metric set now.

As far as the Proto box, I've been eyeing that for a while now, but can't justify the 900 bucks (for now until I get a real garage) I'll just stay with my Kennedy.

Bob, how is your kennedy 5 drawer middle holding up? Is yours friction slides? To be honest I'm a little less than impressed with mine.

That is really a clean, slick setup toolmaniac, even cooler that it has traveled the world. Can you post a bit about that sliding tray? Was that a craftsman accessory or something you made? Looks like it works really well.

Yeah, friction slides. It's good. I have no issues with it except that when it was delivered, I think they dropped it, the cardboard box was beat up and the toolbox was slightly bent. I used some Tri Flow on the slides, and they are fine. I just wish it had 2 deep drawers and 3 shallow ones.

DRIVESITFAR, thanks for noticing my vises and my tools, it certainly feels great to be among people that appreciate fine tools as "instruments" that they really are.

ZKLING, the sliding tray that you see on my hammer drawer, was actualy included in the chest when I bought in new in 1992, (same thing with the folding side shelf)

O man Bob, if you were closer I'd totally swap you some drawers. I prefer the thin drawers. I've been on the lookout for a cabinet with those style removable slides to rob some drawers off, but you don't see them very often. IDK, I just think the drawers flex a bit much. :dunno:

Really? Hum, does it just slide on the top edges of the drawer? I've never seen a craftsman factory one like that. :headscrat:
