I was just trying to be humorous, the toolboxes actually all belonged to my Grandfather. We used to go to real estate auctions and flea markets. Some of the toolboxes were new, teal box, double bank craftsman, but the others were for the most part bought here and there. I don't know the history of all of the tools, he died two years ago when I was 25. I just remember the tools and boxes that I was with him when he bought. He worked for a company called Westinghouse servicing large (several hundred horsepower) electric motors. I would say that the boxes are Ninety percent full, with the exception of the matching snap-on top and bottom. Most of it is older tools, as we bought less and less as his health declined.

Here is a picture of one of the drawers
Picture045.jpg

To be honest with you when I was younger, thought we were the only people in the world obsessed with tools, now I see we weren't alone...

HOLY MOLY! If that drawer is an indication of how all those drawers look then I would say gramps filled you to capacity! I doff my hat to gramps!

Wow, that is a pretty similar setup you got there:beer:

I just recently scrapped that crappy regulator mine came with and got a Smith after the gauges stopped working. That is a huge tank, that welder must see a lot of use.

Those are Ernst socket holders. See this thread on where to buy them.
Cool. Thank you. I'd like to pick up a few sets for the house. It's hard to see in the picture with all the junk in my top drawer, but I have several of the Matco socket holder trays (below) that work ok. It's a hassle sometimes getting sockets off the metal clips that haven't been used in a while:

Sadly everything I have is stuffed in this road box right now. The shop will be done soon though. I'm tire of having to dig around every time I need something and it is overfull.

@steve

nice set(s) do you use them at work or only at home?

What have you paid for the teal box with tools?

I have those same socket holders, I hate the sockets don't always want to release. I also am thinking of buying some different socket organizer.

Wow, Snapmom! Thats fascinating; I've seen some of those in the early Snap on catalogs; care to give us some history of the box and how you found it? It kinda has a "steamer trunk" styling to it! Also, some pics of the inside of the drawers and the top would be cool too! Inquiring minds want to know! :)

This style, with the bent legs, was not made to many years, they changed it to bottom casters, or mounted on the corners, in the early 40s

catserviceman I don't know what originally came in the orange metal box, a CAT sst of some sort I got it and the yellow plastic box under it at an auction.Top was full of Deutsch and Weatherpack terminals and plugs, bottom was an almost complete Weatherpack terminal and crimper kit plus the Deutsch crimper in the picture. I was at our CAT dealer a few days later for parts and got him to price it up new $600 for the weatherpack kit, $300 for the deutsch crimper, I got it all for $15

Yeah I see it now. Those kits are crazy expensive. Good thing they supply those for us, I would not want to have to spend that kind of money on some crimpers.:shocking:

Here's my ClarkeHD box. Its kind of empty but I'm filling it up slowly, but surely...

Its the 56" model with side locker. I got the Snap-On cover off of E-Bay for $20 delivered. It fits the box perfectly. I keep it covered because our shop get dusty some times.

The top of the box is the catch all. Lisle Oil Filter Wrench set, Craftsman & GearWrench torque wrenches...

Slotted and Phillips Screwdriver Sets (I need more phillips screwdrivers)

Prybars, files, a few specialty tools, nut drivers, specialty drivers, Torx screwdrivers...

Plier drawer and locking plier drawer...

Hammers, chisels, punches, air tools, snap-ring plier set...

T-Handle hex keys, driver bits, security bits, driver sockets, etc...

My socket drawer (all Craftsman). Standards on the left, metrics on the right...

A set of impact sockets is on my short list of things to buy. I'm tired of borrowing my brother-in-laws impact sockets when I need one...

Ratchet drawer, Craftsman & GearWrench (I know, I need lots more ratchets. Extension drawer...

The start of my GearWrench wrench sets. There are a couple of other sets I want to round out my set. I want the half moon & "S" wrenches, as well as a set of flex head reversible wrenches.

12 point combination wrenches, all Craftsman

Six point, crowsfeet, deep offset and line wrenches, all Craftsman...

Electrical tool drawer, nuts & bolts drawer, puller & spring compressor drawer.

The ClarkeHD box is a decent box for the money. One of the main reasons I got it was because of its layout. Standard stuff on the left, metric stuff on the right. I'm a little OCD and I like the layout of the box. I think Im off to a pretty decent start with my tools.

rainy afternoon here so i'm going through this thread; 25 pages up from the bottom and 25 from the top and something occurred to me.

is auto mechanics so much different from all other manual trades? does the 20% - 80% rule not apply? i could go on giving specific examples, and i'm sure there is a dedicated punch which is only capable of removing the knifling pin without scratching the johnson rod on a 1922 Abject Zero, but let's face it people.... we got a lot of OCD **** going on here....

and not that it is entirely a bad thing - yes the wife knows your out in the man cave polishing your 11/64" phillips ratchet thingie - but let's lend a kind word of reason to the young fellow just starting out and doesn't realize his 50$ husky ratchet and big box screwdrivers will get him going until he can enter the elite tool collectors of eternity club. maybe own up to the possibility that by the time we can affort lifetime tools, that term may be somewhat shorter than the guy using them to make a living.

just a couple of thoughts from a neophyte....

I agree with you. Thats why I buy mostly Craftsman and GearWrench, a piece at a time. For gift occasions, everyone in my family knows to just get me a gift card to Sears. They don't have to worry about getting me something and I can buy tools...

Not really a tool box per say, but it is a rectangle and does hold tools. My Kennedy was too full and I decided to build something to go on the wall.

That's very nice; I really like choice in colour for the varnish, too!

What are the stays that you use for the wrenches?
