woody,

that setup looks nice! did you build that work surface top for that one box?

Thanks guys i appreciate the comments. Glad to be here, i have learned a lot and spent a lot of money!

The top was a chunk of melamine that was just a little small, but with the 2x4s it fit perfect and i got some sideboards and backboard out of it.

New member. I'm trying to identify the age (or lack thereof) of this craftsman tool chest. I recently purchased it used and am quite happy with it. It is missing the aluminium drawer handle on one small drawer along with the insert tool carrier at the top. Neither are a concern as I'm storing mostly woodworking tools and measuring tools within.

As you can see it is on top of a 2 drawer "middle box". That box was given to me by my brother a number of years ago and I have no idea what make it is. The craftsman came with a key and I had the other keyed some time ago.

Thanks in advance for any assistance. I have another upper box. a Gray, that I will post in another thread.

John.

I just picked this up from Craigslist, my first Snap On. I'm really happy with it and can tell it will last me forever. I need to give it a good clean and when warmer may a nice coat of wax. What is a good cleaner for a painted box?

I have to order some Westling organizers now! I'm moving from a stacked Craftsman arrangement that I've had from the late 90s. It has served me well and is still in great shape but having all of my sockets in one big drawer and spanners in another really appealed.

Thinking about making a wooden top for it, perhaps sandwiched 3/4 ply. I like the Snap On butcherblock but wow!

Time to start organizing my tools!

Jquail, I would guess 70's give or take a few years, based on the style of drawer pull, unless Sears Canada wasn't more in tune with the US Sears...

I'll look for some on my computer and post a few, its a '69 from the central valley of CA in very faded original paint. Just got the engine back in and am hoping to get it out on the road this summer.

Got my 68" Epiq yesterday. Also installed a stainless powertop. This box is massive. Well it seems like it to me coming from a double bay Mac Tech1000. What I really like is the height. Stands at almost 49" which makes it easy on my back when writing on repair orders or using my laptop. No drawer pics yet since I haven't finished swapping boxes and need to get some more socket and wrench racks. Other techs in the shop are jelly of the three full length drawers too.

So I figured I would complete my introduction by posting picks of my box and tools. Quick history, I bought the box (snap on KR 760, emblem fell off years ago) probably in 1984 or 85. I started wrenching professionally
In 1983 straight out of tech college working in a Pontiac/Caddy dealership. It replaced a typical narrow MAC top/bottom combo. I was the first one in the shop to buy this
Style of box. Oddly enough only the large bottom drawer has bearings. All the other drawers are just slides. Like most I started with craftsman and slowly upgraded to mostly
Snap-on. Most of my snap-on purchases were done when I was single and living at home. I do own various tools from craftsman, mac, sk, etc… Like I mentioned in my initial
Intro post I got out of the business in 1991 and have worked in IT ever since. Mainly work on my own vehicles and anything else around the house that needs fixing.
Hope you enjoy the pics

I'm jelly of that box too. I have a 68, black and chrome, but I only have 2 full drawers. My pliers in the short one and sockets in the top, my wrench drawer is just a bit too small lol. Someday I guess I'll have to get a bigger box. I like the idea of a 84" two bay, but I would hate losing that 8" in my socket/ plier drawer. Need like a 112" two bay box lol. Like a 72" bank of full width drawers and a bank of the smaller drawers

Since it came from cali should be rather rust free. BTW - saw your location , Racine , Wisconsin. I have some very close friends here in San Diego who are from racine. they have been here over 30 years. their father was my family doctor for 20 years before he retired.

The central valley is great for cars, hard on interiors and paint but there isn't a spot of rust anywhere on this.
Racine has been tough the last week, walking the dog this morning in -10 wind chill was a shock to the system but nothing a little coffee and Kringle couldn't fix (your friends will confirm).

Thanks for the replies regarding my "Canadian" craftsman box. It is likely that it was made by beach in Canada for Sears - from info I found in another thread. I could find no numbers stamped on it but will keep looking.

Very nice. I'm thinking about doing green slides on my 19 drawer black tech series. Kinda helps to visualize looking at yours together.

You'll love it. I got a 68" matte black with titanium blue trim and bed lined power top. The height and depth is what sold me, and I came from a 58" cornwell. Awesome looking box though:beer:

Hey Dogz,
Look on Craigslist for someone selling a butcher block counter from a kitchen remodel, cut it to size and there you go. Lifetime top just as good as Snap-on for probably under $100. Nice box!

Hadn't thought of craigslist for a top, maybe a kitchen remodel, great idea!
Thanks

If you want to get real fancy, try finding some used bowling lane. A guy here in Alberta sell lengths of it. I looked at it, but couldn't justify using it as my top as I work off of it. Would have looked awesome though.

Ran out of space, added the 26" box today. Not looking forward to moving this next week.

moving that much is never fun....

i've done it several times within a 35 mile radius of home/work. top boxes in the truck bed, roller cabs and side boxes on a utility trailer.

moved all my stuff 1200 miles.
that was a l o n g day of unloading down the ramp of a uhaul, plus the fact it was down around zero with the wind chill...

This has been moved a number of times over the years i've had it, never fun or easy. Usually i had someone to help me, but looks like no-one is available this time. I've ordered some more lifting slings so i'm hoping i can move the pieces into/out of my van with my engine hoist. Always removed the drawers before and lifted the empty boxes in.
