Signcrafter asked for a toolbox tour a few months back. I have attached a Shop Tour and Toolbox tour video and posted it to my YouTube channel for those interested.

Here is the video tour of my new shop and toolboxes.

I've also attached a few recent pictures of the toolboxes and benches completed with the aluminum cupboard doors and overhead cabinets with LED lights.

Thanks for looking.

Looks like I know what I'll be doing for 2 hours tonight. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

You're welcome. Thanks for convincing me to do it.

You'll have to let me know your thoughts after you watch it.

Yep, thanks for the "tour", I'll have to watch it later. You have a great shop!

I need an opinion. Currently I work out of 3 full stack 26" boxes packed to the gills. I also fully occupy 2 shelves of a 2' deep by 4' long rack with my blow molded cases packed side by side and in some instances 2 cases deep. As well as another 4 drawer top chest full.
Here is the question. How big of a set up would it take to contain all of that?
I honestly don't see myself adding any additional tools to my collection as I have nearly every tool I could possibly ever need or want.
I'm continually rearranging the drawers trying to optimize my available space but I realize at this point that it's an exercise in futility.
All that being said, I am winding down my automotive business and it will now be my hobby, building, repairs, and restoration of my own and friends/family vehicles.

I had a fully packed 40” top & bottom 18” deep plus a half height side cabinet. I got a 66” x 25” deep bottom box and it filled about 2/3 of the way laying out tools in a much less efficient way. The depth made way more difference than I thought. I would guess a 50+ wide top, bottom & a side locker if needed for the cases or 72” x 30” bottom.

Bruno, your best bet is to start measuring your existing drawers and designate whether they are "Flat" (where Square inches count ) or "Deep" where cubic inches matter.

One of the best storage units for blow mold boxes is of all things, Lateral files. Again measure for what space is needed...

My thoughts? Can I bring a sleeping bag and move into a corner of your garage? Man you have a very very very nice shop that is beyond well stocked. And all the different stuff you have built with your tools and your skills is very impressive.

Thanks again for taking the time for the tour, very impressive.

Another thought on this topic:

Any decision will be affected by how much space you have. are you keeping a shop? working out of a home detached shop or a 2 car garage?

I'm becoming a real fan of the Montezuma slant front for the basics - ratchets, sockets, wrenches, & drivers - that are used 95% of the time for car work.

The thing is for me, I need the big 36" wide one, so a "cart" or roller to support that is needed. Then everything else would be either in the big 18 drawer Matco, or the many specialty boxes I use as currently, Once I sort out where to put that big Montezuma, with both metric and SAE, I'll probably go for it.

My point being, setup for what you do the most and make it so its either easy to get the tools to the job, OR the job to the tools. The rest is a LOT easier to figure out once you have pined down what you spend the most time at...

My humble submission.

I have a cheap Husky box. Looking to upgrade to a bigger box. Maybe a Snap On, probably a HF box.

And then double that or at least half more.

The locking pin spanner in the 5th pic. Brand? Where did you get it? One of the best ideas I've seen in a while!

I can't speak for where 225 acquired his, but it looks like my Motion Pro set that is used for holding motorcycle clutches while removing.

Might help to post a picture of at least the stacks you have if you have not already.

I moved away from an extra tall 26" stack to a wider/deeper (54"X24")bottom box and could not be happier I did. I like have the box as an extra work bench with most of my tools at my finger tips. So I moved all of the tools from the stack, tool cart, and what I've added since. I just got done doing a reorganizing of my box and made even little more room.

I would thing a 24" + deep by 72" wide bottom box with around 20 drawers or so would take care of you needs. Like Outlawmws said, measure your current sq and cu inches.

It looks like your cheap box is stocked with some pretty decent tools. That’s the right way to do things....

Yea, lol. I'm going to wait and see how room is. I have a socket organizer that all my Craftsman sockets will go in. And I'm getting another set of screwdrivers. The Wiha's are mostly Torx drivers. And of ratcheting wrenches (SRXRM710). Then see where I'm at.

It’s fun to see the beautifully organized huge snap in boxes, but I always like to see what people do with what they have

Thank you. I apologize it was 2-hours long. I tried to move through it at a fairly brisk pace but it's amazing how much a person collects in a lifetime of wrenching. Oh, and I also was king of proud and wanted to show it off.:D

Thank you for taking those two hours of your time to watch it.

Although that looks real nice, I would have to have a 10k square foot warehouse full of toolboxes if I allowed that much space between tools.:lol_hitti

Agreed, if 10 screwdrivers took up an entire wide drawer I'd have a screwdriver box.

nbruno, you have a lot of nice tools. I would start with a lower 72" wide by at least 24" deep, 28" or 30" better. I might leave some of the BM cases in the rack on the lesser used stuff. You could add a top box or a side box/s if you need more storage.

Going to a 24" or more deep drawer really makes a big difference. Post drawer shots of your new box.

Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Nice set of tools you got there, you might have a tough time getting all that into a 72". Seen some independent guys having 2 stacked 54"s or slightly bigger in the new Epiq or Mac sizes., plus the pullers were kept somewhere else and electric tools in another spot .

Thanks for the compliments guys, I obviously left out a bunch of drawers just as full as the ones I posted plus a handful of tool boxes loaded down with mid-grade tools like craftsman ratchets/sockets, and other mid-grade brand wrenches, screwdrivers etc.
My biggest concern is keeping like tools together. Right now I need to open 3 drawers to pick ratchet/sockets and 5-6 drawers to get the wrenches I'm looking for, 2 drawers for screwdrivers. You get the idea.
I want to open one drawer for each tool category and be able to grab exactly what I need.
I was afraid the solution would be a 72" box, I just don't really want to deal with a box that big nor do I want to pay for a box that big. I'm more of a spend the money on tools and stuff em in whatever works kind of guy but it's starting to get ridiculous now. A where's Waldo of tool storage.
I'm sure I don't have to tell you guys, when you're trying to select the right tool of a specific category it's much nicer/easier to be able to see all of your choices right in front of you and not dig through drawers.

I fully understand you not wanting to step up in boxes but I was in a very similar situation at both my full-time job as well as at my home shop/business and was tired of opening several drawers for task similar tools. I had multiple boxes and had done the whole toolbox shuffle from home to work and back again too many times to mention.

With the amount of task like tools I have the only way I found to keep them in related drawers was in fact a larger box. It is so much more efficient to open a socket drawer and have ALL of my sockets in one drawer, open a wrench drawer and have ALL of my wrenches in one drawer. As for screwdrivers and other small items it isn't as much of a dilemma, but sockets and wrenches seem to the be hardest to house in single drawers without simply going to a larger box. Also when you get to that many like tools in single drawers you have to start thinking weight capacity of said drawers. There are a lot of boxes that can in fact physically house sockets and wrenches but for how long. If a weekend wrencher and only going to be opening the drawer a few dozen times a weekend you'll probably be fine, add twenty times a night and 8-10 hours a day on weekends and those drawers aren't going to last long term.

Just my thoughts.

Nbruno have you thought about a blueprint cabinet or 2? I just saw a couple listed for $50 each and they have big drawers designed to hold a good amount of weight.

Bruno, this is EXACTLY why I was suggesting the Montezuma slant box. For 90% or more of a guys needs, there are NO drawers to open...

Outlawmws, I'm so tempted but I'm having a hard time getting my head around something so different from what I'm used to.
I keep looking at them, studying is more like it, and try to picture myself working out of it and I can't seem to make it work for me.
Although everything is perfectly organized it just seems like too much stuff in such a small space for me.
