Thank you, JackW. This looks great! What is the one on the right second from the top?

Gives me some ideas for the future!

It's the Viking ship emblem from a Rover passenger car. I think that one is off if a P5 Rover saloon - late 1950's.

Here is mine at home. I’m not a mechanic by trade but cars and mechanical junk are my hobbies.

Bottom is an old MAC that was my grandfather’s back in the 70s/80s when he was a heavy duty guy. It’s beat up and has had a hard life, even though it looks pretty good in pictures. But it works great and it’s very sentimental. Top is some random USA Husky or Waterloo, not sure. Probably will replace the top box at some point.

Tools are a big mix but the majority are MAC, Snap On, Gearwrench, Mastercraft, Napa. There is some SK, Proto, Matco in there as well.

One day I’ll add drawer pics.

Hey everyone. I’m new to the forums but had a question. I have to transport my Cornwell 5 drawer pro series tool box and was wondering if it could be disassembled at all to fit into a Mitsubishi Outlander. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

The dealership I work at took a direct hit from a tornado last spring. Our insurance company paid for my new box

I'm over here in Owensville and heard the story. Glad you were safe and also glad you got a great replacement. Be safe.

Burnt orange looking good. I saw a Homak box at the local NAPA in the color, it really popped.\

EDIT: Hope you don't need in that electrical panel often. :)

Bought this a couple of weeks ago from a pawn shop, in good shape mechanically other than sticky sliders but it had pretty dull paint that turned my shop towels red when I gave it its initial cleaning. After some research it's clear this is a common issue on this vintage of box due to the use of single stage paint without a hardener - so not wanting to tackle a re-spray I decided to go the "easy" route of vinyl wrap. Twelve hours and about a hundred bucks later it came it pretty good, solid five footer for sure. Now to fill it with some tools!

Hey zekgb, how is the vinyl wrap holding up? I have a box that needs a little work and I’m thinking about trying your idea of wrapping it.

My “portable” box. I say that because it’s too heavy to carry very far lol. I want to get Milwaukee packout with the rolling base to combine my Milwaukee bag and this box.

Tool nut has the pack out out for 199.99. Now keep in mind they hold a lot of **** and they get heavy as all hell. So if loading it into a car keep that in mind.

Got my Mr Big Today! Moving all my hand tools from 4 smaller boxes to 1 box... Wishing I got a top chest and work center already... Box is almost full already hahaha... I keep all my specialty and cased tools on a shelving to save on toolbox space and still not enough room!

Gonna have to save my pennies for a top chest and side cabinets/chests!

Same thing happened after building the shop (60x128 with 32x40 office) it just filled up to fast.

My advice is to plan on as big as you can afford then save longer and buy bigger! Hahahaha

It's holding up great so far. I expect it will be at least as durable as the Rustoleum spray job I gave the office supply cabinets I'm using for the rest of my garage storage and I have enough extra for repairing any damage that occurs. If you do it don't skimp on the material - get Avery or 3M only for the best combination of workability during installation and durability afterwards.

This is my tool box/ desk

Little rough right now as it's in the middle of some stuff. Need to finish painting it grey. Never really liked the Kennedy brown. Just got the second monitor mounted and need to tidy up the cables. Also going to machine a new mounting plate for it that looks better and machine a grill for the fans on the back. My PC is built into the bottom drawer. There is intake fans on the bottom of the box and the exhaust fans are out the back. Also have an air filter and air tool oiler built into the box. One of the lines out the side is oiled for my air tools and the other is a clean line. Want to replace the top with a butcher block

No, buying the Toolvault was my choice. The insurance was willing to buy any box comparable in price and quality, including a new two bay Matco like I had before. Even though my Matco box was 20 years old. The Toolvault cost the same as a new Matco 4s two bay. The Toolvault was a much needed upgrade plus I avoided having to pay any sales tax by buying online.

If I were you I would have tried to buy that box back from them for cheap. What were they asking? It could be fixed for sure. It would be awesome to buy that back for $100

Garage Setup:

2 Craftsman (Red)

1 Really old Popular Mechanics (Red)

2 New Craftsman! (Black)

The bottom benches are from a cafeteria remodel. They were the checkout counters. I really liked the Stainless & Red so I asked the GC if I could have them for my garage.

Can you get it powder coated or is it crazy expensive and not worth the hassle? I have an old tool box from my first year as an apprentice mechanic and the
crackle finish is coming off.

A lot of the cost in powder coat comes from the preparation like chrome. If you can do the blasting or old finish removal the finish is fairly cheap.

Looks a good set up that does.
I like it so far. I can't believe how many tools I sold off over the last few years, there is a lot of empty space in the 26" boxes. Cart is plum full of wiring parts/tools. Have to get some time to actually organize things.

Starting from the left 1-I use to have a Matco franchise and picked up a frig. the cart is from a flip I did and it use to be red. 2-top box is a discontinued Kobalt top box I picked it up for $7 the bottom box is a 1963 Mac box I took in on trade for a New Matco double bay. Before ya'll jump on me it use to be red and was really beat up. I painted and put new pull handles on.3- Pro Craftsman Mrs. Cat bought for me Christmas of 97, it also use to be red, I painted to match the other boxes.4- A Kobalt bottom box that came in damaged, I paid $25, works perfect nothing is racked, back upper corner dented. I would love to have a big triple bay Matco but I really like having all the small drawers. Mike

So half of you have tool boxes and half have too chests with a worktop. Which works better? having the narrower toolbox with more tool storage or wider with a workbench but having to reach further for your tools. When I was growing up no-one had a worktop but now designing a garage that's two cars deep the tool chest with a worktop might work better.

If I were to pare down to just one thing for shop use, I would go with a Montezuma slant top "chest" for the most commonly used tools (open the door and all the commonly used sockets, ratchets, extensions wrenches and drivers are at your fingertips) on top of a roller with a couple of drawers for other commonly used tools; ( OBD reader, DVOM, torque wrenches, etc...), as a "cart" setup, with folding side extensions on both sides of that for "staging area", one with a small vise. This to drag over to the vehicle.

I'd still have a bigger roller with many but shorter drawers for storage of less used tools. I'm still looking for the "right" 36" wide roller to do the above "Cart" setup as I want the large Montezuma...

I agree with Outlaw. This type of set up gives you easy access to your most used tools. It also allows you to bring these tools directly to the work area. The Montezuma slant top just doesn't get the "love" that others do.
