New member here I did a refurbish on an old mac mb1500 box I got for cheap online. I used a stall mat from TSC for the topper

It's the nicest box I've ever had.61275874b3ef23bc6c13057fdc9d38b8.jpgca4029471f8eca1a15b94222ea5d7c23.jpg494cd54cab530cfc0c11850cedae2c10.jpg78ed745cc5eb4c6bccede6ee17892bc9.jpg

I think I spy the remnants of that stall mat going to good use!
Thanks I looked around and for $38 for a 4×6 that's 3/4" thick.

You cant beat it especially when looking at toolbox specific toppers can get expensive.

That's a lucky break!

Did you ever consider going with a second triple, vs a top box? Are you happy with the space per dollar equation of the top? How's the visibility in the top drawers and hutch area?

I've got a 1033 and 1 locker, plus another single bay top/bottom, and things are getting very tight.

I have too many boxes.... cranberry 1032 and an extreme green 1022 with end cab.....two months after I bought the 1032, I traded a 700 dollar car for a second 1022 in green.... I love the layout of the 1032 over the 1022/1023 configuration. 1033 only gets you wide top drawers with the conventional three bank layout. the drawers on the 1032 below the full width drawer are the same width as the top "wide" drawers on a 1022/1023. the amount of usable space is much better imo. it means the difference between two wrench drawers, and one. etc. I have a single bank top and bottom at work and for ears loved it, but now hate it over having a work surface....

If I had it to do over again, I''d do a 1032 in green, then a KTL1022 with an end cab to join them together just like I have here (KRL1022, end cab KTL1022). the end locker will lock together both end cabs for "one" box instead of two boxes rolled up against to each other. I still like the layout of the 1032 better on the other side of the shop... just wish it don't contrast the neon green so bad... but for 5K off the truck new, I could't justify spending 7K more for the right color.....

^^^ always loved cranberry red. After seeing all your green I think I "get it" now. Never understood why people went so crazy for it before.

Bought this a couple of weeks ago from a pawn shop, in good shape mechanically other than sticky sliders but it had pretty dull paint that turned my shop towels red when I gave it its initial cleaning. After some research it's clear this is a common issue on this vintage of box due to the use of single stage paint without a hardener - so not wanting to tackle a re-spray I decided to go the "easy" route of vinyl wrap. Twelve hours and about a hundred bucks later it came it pretty good, solid five footer for sure. Now to fill it with some tools!

That large drawer on the bottom still boggles the mind :headscrat

I'm sure it's why the 1500/1700 can be had relatively inexpensively now (I bought mine for $600.) That drawer is massively overbuilt and was meant to store prybars, pickle forks and the like and I've managed to fill it just fine. I'd imagine since this was the first all ball bearing box from MAC (maybe even the first one from any of the tool truck mfg's) the idea of using such a drawer for sockets hadn't occurred to their product designers.

I love mine as well, more than enough for a home garage especially since it doubles as a second workbench for me. Congrats on the score!

ok. I'll play. Meet "Frankenbox". I considered buying a new toolbox for quite a while. I admit some of the 60 to 70 inch ones are pretty nice. But I'm really attached to the Craftsman top box I bought when I was a mechanic's apprentice in '93. It has a sticker from every place I have ever worked on it, including my current job. I wish I still had the bottom box but it didn't survive a move and hence the cheap Husky. But it works fine for the infrequently used tools. The black Mastercraft works well for wrenches, sockets and all other commonly used tools. IN the end I decided I was happy with the boxes (it's more about what's in them, which I think had always been true) so I just bolted them together and added a varnished plywood top. Works for me.

Cheers,

Bill

Pound for pound the best tool box for the money... and I’m willing to fight anyone that disagrees...[emoji12]

Just kidding, maybe NOT the best, but for the home shop you would be hard pressed to find a better VALUE. I also own 2 Snap On boxes so....

I have a couple of You Tube videos of this box if interested.. just search my screen name.

I have that Craftsman top box too! I've switched the narrow tall drawer to a pair of half height drawers.

Thanks i guess that's my talent I know the value of a large variety of things from power equipment to tools and toolboxes.

If I see something comeup for sale and its underpriced I'll ****** it up.

Idk if I'll keep it i dont really have room. It's a pretty nice box though.

MikeF,

That's a great switch. That single drawer does result in wasted space. Wish I'd done that.

I did it. I finally pulled the trigger. I broke down and spent the money. Oddly missing that feeling of euphoria, but I haven't transferred my tools into it yet and set up shop. Once i start rearranging the shop to make room for this I'm sure I'll get giddy.

Looked over the new Icon chest on display at HF. Nice, but not $5k nice IMHO. Watching the youtube video comparing this to the Husky convinced me it was worth the $$.

If you get one of these, yer gonna need at least 2 strong backs to unload it. Once you get it off the truck (I removed all drawers to shave weight) getting it off its pallet is another treat. Castors are already attached, its a bear. Lubed up the slides before putting the drawers back in.

Going to sell my 42" wide Craftsman chest to offset the cost of this one, reuse the top chest until I need to upgrade.

If anyone else has one of these, can you tell me what that bag of small black plastic pieces is for? Looks to be one for each drawer?

Dammit I scour the local buy sells for deals like that and so far no luck.

Good score!
Facebook and craigslist it seems like they are scoured.

Try some selling apps like let go and offerup. That is where I find the best deals

I have both of those apps. and do pretty good on them, my biggest complaint is no shows, meaning that I go to look at something at a predetermined time and they are not there and wont answer a text. Has happened about 5 times.

Recently moved to a new house and finally decided to build myself a tool collection for home use. I started with a HF 44” Series 2 box and built up a set of tools (mainly gearwrench and other asian brands) for light repairs and maintenance work. Not pictured below are several blow-molded cases (OTC torx master set, schley Honda bushing tool, Hf rear caliper tool, etc). Any feedback is welcomed. I did not expect to run out of space so quickly, lol.

Get some wrench rails and run your wrenches in both directions. might all fit in one drawer. get a pliers rack and you will have more room in the pliers drawer. nice thing about us general is you can add the top box and a side locker and a side 7 drawer cab. and then buy even more tools. 'tis the garage journal way.

Thanks. Any recommendations on a wrench rail or a pliers rack?

Search Garage Journal and you’ll find plenty of threads analyzing the available options...

My first stop was Harbor Freight for different storage accessories. They have some wrench rails, pliers racks you can check out without spending an arm and a leg on.

Nice blue us general 44! I had an orange 44, and a few months later bought a 2nd one to put side by side. I will upload pics soon, but I really like having the 88 inch countertop space. Can't beat that value.

This’ll take a few posts, but here’s some shots of inside my daily work box. I’m currently starting a re-organization project since I added another locker, and I’m over die for it. Some drawers are not exactly how I want them, so any input would be great!
