I knocked this up a few weeks ago. Scored the timber from some old roof trusses that grandad had in the driveway for years.
The top and shelves are 'Structafloor' from Bunnings.
It all went together better than I expected, I still have to finalise the fence system I have since put together and roundover some edges. e52f6cf4cb9bf994defe05892d3655f9.jpg57b21a1d2126ec29b604353a06c6b6ae.jpg

Mine isn't what or how good but where. 2 benches, one with rotator vise. Some place to blow dross so the slag spray isn't all over the floor for every little cut.

The benches were scrap. I always meant to do something better but it worked. We shot it in the door when I moved in and it worked well enough that they never got replaced. The dimensions are ideal, the one is basically a vise stand with bench attached. I don't care for the vise on the fab bench. I have electric from the floor, air comes from behind or overhead. The welder in this pic is where its sposed to be, reaches the benches and a good share of the shop floor without unhooking. Just a little water on the floor, not grease.
I have had several men mention this was one of the best layouts they have ever worked in. Not the best bench but the floor plan, no one notices the scrap benches. No one notices the tool brands.

My new workbenches in my newly finished shop. By doing a corner bench I ended up with about 10' more bench space than my previous shop. And I never really lacked for bench space there.:D

zmotorsports looks great. I really like the back splash !
Is that something you had all bent up with the as one piece?
I wonder might a shelf on rollers to house a trash can in the empty space.

Thanks for the comments.

I had the benchtops bent up at my local metal supply house. The six foot benchtop dropped right into place I merely had to weld up the two front corners.

The 12' and the 10' benches I welded together at the seam and also welded the front corners.

I will be fabricating a door for each of the openings which will be used for tool storage.

More pictures of the bench build can be seen in my 50x60x16 Shop/RV Garage build in my signature. Benches are on the last few pages.

everything about that is perfect. your cans shelf is the right depth and height, good bench height and depth, the corner looks usable, I just need to know what's going in the empty section in the bench.

Mike,

Do you find that having the vise set in so far from the corner inhibits you in any way? I've always placed mine right at the corner so I can swivel to the short edge.

I got the same husky compressor! lol

If you change the silencer from that ****** one they included and switch it to this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-2-Inch-Ai...542954?hash=item3f401c676a:g:m3UAAOSwnK9ZVA1G

It will be a lot quieter. I've had mine for many years now and it completely changed how the air compressor sounded when I switched.

Thank you. These benches are 2 inches taller than the ones in my old shop. These are right @ 40" to top of work surface and seem to be perfect for both my son and I so far. I just did what felt comfortable on the shelf holding my aerosols/chemicals and there again, so far it feel right.

The empty location in the 12' bench will eventually have a door to close it off. It was too short to put another toolbox in yet I wanted to make it usable storage and not waste the space. I also have one similar in size in my 6' workbench. I will fabricate a tube framed door and then skin it with sheetmetal or aluminum and install latches but for now I just need to the shop put together and usable.

Thanks again for the comments.

Actually I moved it further from the corner on purpose because my last one was at the corner and I didn't like it. I wanted this one with a bit more room on the right side as I was always bumping into my toolbox at my last shop and didn't like it right at the edge of the bench. Just personal preference I guess.

Built another workbench, this time inside my work shed, inside the barn/shop. My first one (link here) worked out all the bugs. This one is 12' long.

Now I'm going to take down the pegboard, and re-do it. Probably run it wall to wall, all the way up to the headers.

Didn't want to start another HF 44" tool cabinet thread... but here's what I worked on today... not as cool as Steevo's build but it will work for me.

Decided to retire an old craftsman homeowners special workbench (two cabinets joined to firm a 20" x 8') and upgrade to a couple of HF 44" cabinets.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/...1&d=1503283750

Wanted a 10 foot top with room to sit with legs under the bench. Found a 26" x 10' "rubber wood" butcher block counter top at a local place called Southeasten Salvage... pics are self explanatory.

Will use some spar varnish on it and trim the front edge with a strip of aluminum stock or some aluminum yard sticks. Will add some to the back to keep **** from sliding off the back. Will update after it's finished..

Nice and simple but cheap enough I don't mind if I scratch it or stain it.

Love this setup Mike! I am going to be fabbing about 50-60 ft of similar bench for multiple parts of my shop as well. We built 18 or so desks for our office using a similar structure in 2" square tube with black onyx tops. Super easy to work with and bulletproof. I was originally thinking butcher block tops for my workbenches but I really like what you've done with plain black steel and may go that direction now.

What (if anything) did you use for a base under the steel top? And where did you get your tool drawers? They fit and look fantastic.

Here is mine. My garage is a 2-car 20.5" X 21", so I tried to pack stuff.

I had 3 Craftsman base I bought for the purpose of making a workbench unit. Then I managed to find on local internet classified ads a maple butcher top. I sanded it and applied varnish. It turned out pretty nice, I think.

The top piece measures 9.5 ft X 29 inches. I removed the caster wheels from the bases and used small pieces of wood to act as little foot.

On the left hand, I drilled 3 holes, ready to mount my vise. On the left side, I added a used Snap-On side cabinet I bought.

Since the 3 bases are not as deep as the top, I made a little shelf in the back where I stored jack stands

Above this unit, I have 3 NAPA metal cabinets.

Last thing I'd like to do on this, aside the vise, is to add a thin drawer mounted (ideally same as the base) just under the top maple, just above the stool. Finding a single drawer seems pretty difficult!!!

Thanks

I know this is an old post. saw your Echlin sticker. I used to work for Midland Brake and Brake Parts. Two divisions of Echlin.

I was bored this morning and decided I needed another bench. Wanted a mobile one this time. Off to home depot for wood and some casters. Used 5" rubber casters.

New bench arrival lol

here's my work in progress

garage-60_zps9cijwsqw-XL.jpg

going to have a flip-up back-splash for the welding station.

Nice. Is that grate covering a drain in front of the benches? My only concern would be dropping something in them and then trying to find it.

Do you mind me asking what overhead cabinets those are? I'm looking for something in a gray color for my shop to put over my workbenches and be able to mount some LED lights under.

Thanks.

Both the upper and lower cabinets are Home Depot Husky brand. They're not bad.
Welding table is obviously home made. 2 receiver hitches and 4" channel iron.

The removable aluminum grating floor spans between the ramps of the lift. It's a double-wide 4-post lift. Whole thing goes up into the ceiling.

So your base cabinets move up and down with the lift? You must only use it when you need parking? Is that correct?

I just picked up this old bench the other day. I think it's an Equipto? It doesn't have any cast/stamped in markings that I can see. Anyone know any details on these as being either Equipto/Lyon benches (or something else?) I'm going to add some casters to it so it will be a moveable welding bench. Going to mount a big ol' vise to one corner of it. Should do the trick.

It's missing one of the countersunk slot head machine bolts with square nut from the top surface - if anyone has a perfectly patina's spare I could use?

That's a neat setup, LX. Looks like you can still get a single car up the center of the lift. Where do you put your tools when the lift is up and you're working underneath a car?

Wow! I didn't expect that when I looked at your previous workbench photo. Sorta like a movable mezzanine. So if you ever get flooded like Texas has, your tools & red car are in no danger of getting wet, right? :D
