My two denches, 2x2 tubing with butcher block tops from the outlet store. This one is on leveling casters and has two general box’s built in.

This box my wife wanted to be able to sit at it like a desk

All done. I had some old tongue and groove boards the previous owner of the house left behind. Figured the bench could use a shelf. Added a coat of purified linseed oil. It’ll make a great beater bench.

Nice bench and shop! Tell us more about your Wilton. How did you get the steel to gleam so bright? I love how even and well fitting your jaws are, but why is one jaw so much thicker than the other? Maybe it’s just the angle of the picture? I have a Wilton I’m restoring.. and the jaws don’t fit as nicely as I’d like.

My two main benches get cleaned almost every day when I quit working.
This habit developed while working almost 20 years in a shop environment that had three shifts and worked 24/7 year round.

I have two smaller benches (counter tops really) where I have work in progress stored or stacked.

I’ve slacked off a little in the 11 years since I retired, but old habits die hard.

The spindle, handle, horse shoe washer and end cap have been polished and chrome plated. I was sending parts off for plating for one of my car projects, so included these at the time. The vise castings were ground smooth and powder coated. The aluminum jaws were in the vise when I bought it, I just sanded them smooth and polished them. I do not know why the one jaw was made so thick. It was in the front when I bought it, but figured out that if I put it in the rear, the face was just proud of my side cabinets. So I am able to clamp long stock in the vise without interfering with the end cabinets. It wasn't all planned, but worked out well.

I have several construction yards each with numerous workbenches. These 2 are in my home garage. I am sitting at one of them now. The wooden one has crafted and repaired countless toys and machinery. My 2 grandsons grew up building projects on it. Now that they are older each has laid chaim to the bench. When they get houses of their own I will cut the bench in half and gift it to them. Many good memories made at it.

If you look close and zoom in on the little piece of blue paper stuck above the bench in the first photo you will see the blueprint drawing my youngest grandson drew of a toy gun we built together.

OPPS got bumped off. After building the gun from a piece of scrap lumber, we painted it. He had to go home before the paint drid and before he played with it. When he came for the next visit he had outgrown toys. Unfortunately that was the end of a era. That blueprint will forever be stuck to the wall exactly where he put it.

A few more. I have a little 5 acre scrap of land I turned into a construction yard. I rent the big building out but keep this little piece with a Tuff Shed and small outside workbench that I built 25 years ago. The bench is only 4'x8' but has 120 volt electric and 4 locking drawers. Inside the tool shed is a little copper topped workbench that was once a dining table from a defunct local café. I sit at it and tinker with chainsaws and misc.

This 8'×10' workbench has sentimental value but now is seldom used. I started a construction business when I was 20 and had nothing. I poured a slab and built this bench and started life. I boxed it in with light metal and kept my Lincold crackerbox welder underneath. For 20 years I worked at this bench daily. When I sold that construction yard I took the bench with me just because.

Coming up on the end of my full garage workshop makeover and now that I have my other workbench squared away and can use it to support larger pieces, I can finally tackle this Christiansen bench I picked up awhile back.

Thanks to the beginnings of this thread, I saw this flyer for what I think is my exact table.





Distinct pegs on the vises.


It works but wobbles some and I think it just needs an overall teardown and rebuild. Everything will come off and be given attention.



I also need to find all of the nails and metal bits that are embedded in the top before planing it down.



At some point someone added drawers. While storage is always welcome, I think I'm going to remove them and the rails they sit on.



Should be a nice work bench after all is said and done.

Take a look at a pinpoint metal detector for finding all that embedded metal in your workbench. Might work pretty well.
