I hear ya and roll-aways under there would be a good idea. I guess I need all I can get in my shop....my underbench shelf is crammed full of engine parts, tools and supplies that would have to go someplace else (like your bike caddy's.)...

Thanks for the compliments. Yeah stray engine parts can get out of hand... that's one of the reasons I gravitate towards bikes. Not enough space or money for cars :)

before you load that bench down you should drywall. the craft paper vapor barrier covering the insulation is highly flammable. otherwise, looking good. the weight of the toolbox should keep the bench from tipping over. also, the wheels bolted to a board makes for a good dolly.

Yep drywall will be done very soon.

"L" shaped. One side steel top for welding, other side wood top for general work. HF toolbox under the wood top. Last pic is my wood working bench. It's on the opposite side of the shop to keep the sawdust out of the wrenching side.

So, here is one of them (I'll post my metal bench when I finish it). It is made from our old bathroom vanity cabinents. I was going to throw them out when I realized they would make a good bench and were in great shape. I sanded the exterior, painted it black, added some stainless hardware, and built a steel angle/tube structure to get it the right height. I have not topped it yet. I was going to go stainless, but I think I am going to use butcher block instead. The right side houses a computer and laser printer. On the left, just below the top is a hitch receiver for a vise, bar stock bender, my daughter's can crusher, etc. Righ now it is covered with **** as I continue to work on building the garage. It just seems to keep changing, and this place doesn't help by giving me new ideas!

Well, I've been lurking on this site for a while, and I finished the pegboard over my workbench over Christmas, so I thought this would be a fitting first post.

I like the stripes and race number. That's a neat idea that I wouldn't of thought of

- but I hope that vice is not bolted down. It's pretty much useless there. ;)

What am I missing in this picture? I always put my vise on the corner, so it can be used on two different sides of the bench if needed. Is there a better way?

The front plane of the rear stationary jaw should be forward of the face of the bench. The best way to position a vice is to clamp something in it vertically (a 2' length of 2"x4" for example) push it forward so the 2"x4" hits the face of the bench, pull it back an 1/4" or so then mark your mounting holes. As that one is, you can't clamp anything that is long in a vertical position.

OK, mine ain't purdy, but here it is. I paid $5 for the cabinet about 28 years ago from a department store that went out of business. I added a base made of 2x4's and 2x6's, and a cheap Wilton vise. Planning to build a replacement out of metal one of these days soon.

Just finished the corner cabinets/countertop today. Pretty hyped about how it all turned out. I have a total of about $40 bucks in workbenches and cabinets in this picture.

Thanks. Yea its 3\8". I really wanted 1\2" but couldn't find a decent price on a piece that big. I picked up that top for $200. All the 1\2" even used was 500+. I came in at $375 to build the complete table.

You can see my benches in these pics if you look close & through all the clutter. LOL They were old packing tables made out of pallet rack, & they have galvanized tops, 9 ft long & about 24 in. deep I have 5 & they are NOT for sale. I can take them apart & take them whereever I go. One thing I really like is that I can see everything I have, where as the cabinets I have I can't see anything in them so I forget whats in them.

Very nice table, SlackerGarageShop.

In the last two weeks, I got rid of one of my benches and put in another. Here's the one that's now gone:

15201115.jpg

It was a solid-core door on a Harbor Freight 13-drawer tool chest. It's a shame that it's gone, because it was a perfectly good workbench.

But here's the new one. The difference is: now I can sit down. (Hey, that's important to me -- I'm getting older.)

newdrawers1.jpg

The false drawer on the upper right side hides my air reel, which is now mounted horizontally. The little drawers on top fit into a space cut into the wall, between the studs. A magnifying lamp will go in soon, as will an important feature: a coffee cup warmer.

I made it by cutting a single Equipto drawer kit in half, and then cutting a piece of oak butcher block to fit. I painted the chair and had it reupholstered with leftover leather from when I did my car interior.

The source pieces:

Had one workbench with the intention of keeping fewer horizontal places to pile junk. Worked too well and I had to bring out a table every time I needed to do something. I already had a few file cabinets for storage and no more wall space for another bench. Something had to give.
Before (with the table out)

Also did not want to spend any money.

IMG_3251.jpg

$60 for 3 cabinets, and one from my basement. Built a 2x4 frame with legs made from various conduit for legs to handle the large slope. Plywood resting on 2x6. Screwed to the wall. I have more drawer space than before, plus bonus storage under the bench top. I got a great deal on the cabinets on craigslist. Going rate is about 65-85 each for 2 drawer lateral files.

Garage slope did make the right side a bit taller than I would have liked.

There are a few things I would do differently and may end up doing in the summer, but overall I'm pretty happy with it. Even makes the garage feel bigger.

After I sell the 2 file cabinets I was using, I may break even on this.

Hey Jack Olsen, I like your shop, but I'm especially impressed by your innovative approach to solving problems and for coloring outside the lines.

Currently it looks like this....

Main bench is buried in tools that need to be put away..

Welding bench appears to be buried in vises..

Even my beater bag on top of my welding toolbox has become a vise pillow...

Hey Slacker,

I have a dewalt chop saw just like yours I believe, I see you removed the clamp & rod pieces. I ended up milling the aluminum part down about 3/16ths or so if I remember right because it made the clamp push up on whatever you were clamping & would throw your cut off. It's probably one of my least favorite tools since it creates so much abrasive dust.

Here is my little guy. Short on space in a one car so it had to be built just the right size. The drawers are 1x with 100# sliders and the top is 3/4" thick industrial plastic. The top can be cleaned with brake cleaner which is nice. The house I'm working on buying will give me twice the size so a bigger bench will be in order.

Trying to follow in the shadow of the Grand Poo Baa Olsen, I ordered the 8 ft. long butcher block top from Sears as I found it for 115.00 shipped to the store
