Horse mats from tractor supply aren't a bad buy

I used 12" X 12" rubber garage floor files as the top work surface. However some of them are staring to curl. Anyone know of a cheap source for large sheets of rubber that will lay totally flat. (42" X 96")

I have two pieces of 3/4" MDF under it. The front and both ends are bent down 1.5" and the back is bent upwards 1.5". I need to weld or cleanup the corners a bit (not shown).

I just sprayed with a light coat of oil and wiped down real quick. Mainly just wanted to get the boot marks off where they were walking on it. :) but I do like it dark, goes with the garage color scheme.

I would consider a product like Boeshield, would work much better than oil and give you better results.

Love this thread, gave me a bunch of ideas for my woodworking/workshop garage. Here are some pics of my space as I've modified it over time. You can see how much of a difference the epoxy flooring makes, they also filled in my control joints with a flexible sealer so no more sawdust and drill bits stuck in the floor cracks! I can just use the leaf blower to clean out the dust when im done, i love it!

Nice bench and layout. Do you have to position your truck like that to fit in the garage or is just for a photo op?

I put it in that way to have lots of walking clearance around the truck when I closed the door. In this case, I was installing speakers in the doors so I needed all four open with room to circle from side to side. When I park in the garage I pull straight in.

Thanks! The two woodworking benches I got on sale from harbor freight for $110 each and the large one in the back is a craftsman bench that fit the space perfectly. I got the steel cabinets for $15/each at an estate sale, then sanded/painted them myself.

Jammiman,

You should start a build threat, would love to see the progress of where you started and how you got there. Those black full height cabinets are awesome! What brand are they? Love the Ridgeline also.

This is the Paul Sellers inspired English Empire style work bench I made this summer. I have since added a tail and side vise.

Found this one in the scrap bin, had 2 huge vices attached, apparently some engineer ***** deemed it "unsafe" because it didn't have a makers plate on it, Ive been giving it a bit of a rebirth.

I have the traditional style work benches that line the walls of my work shop, but I find my 2 lifts in the middle of the shop the most handy and useful

My current progress. Finally got my top in. 10 Gauge steel, measuring 97" x 26".

That bench top looks great! Where did you get it at? I got mine at Curtis steel... They did great on the bends but not so great on leaving it out in the rain after, so I have had some rust across the top... Tried bioshield (tends to leave it sticky) and paste waste works ok but wiping it with a greasy rag across the top works the best so far.

So I updated mine recently, but like every garage, it is still in the process of finishing.
From this:

To this:

A new 0.25" metal plate will be replacing this hinged lid.

I need to weld on some leveling pads and finish the tops.

Love this thread, I'm in the process of building a work bench/storage unit for my garage. Thanks everyone fir the ideas. The wall it will be in is about 24' and will probably make it full wall or close to it.

Zeppe, love the parts cabinets. Where did you find those? Any manufacturer/model numbers you can share?

Also, is the orange cabinets something you created, or a set of old kitchen cabinets? I like how they are drawer heavy.

Anyhow, looks good as-is. Paint will be the icing on the cake.

I just built mine a few weeks ago. I have it at our cabin up in the northern part of lower MI. Wanted something quick and easy to make, as most of the time I want to be riding sleds, ATV's and out on the lake. Want to put a small 30 gallon compressor in the empty space. It's not finished, but it's getting there.

Here's my new one, just a section of bowling lane banded with 2X6's and bottom shelf two 2X10's. Everything coated with polyurethane. The legs were salvaged from an old machine shop bench, and I really liked the style as they fit in with the old 'arn and machine stands in the shop. I was surprised to find a brass tag on the legs as I was cleaning them up for painting. It read "Holley Carburator Co." and was painted over with about 5 coats. So, neat provenance there.

I need to bolt my Wilton vise and Pony wood vise on and I'm good to go.

Zeppe, that is too cool!!
No I have not found any markings, they are originally OD Green. I bought them from a CL add, they were a Lady's late husband's work benches. He bought them from a gov auction in the early 70's. Paid $60 I think.

The orange ones I hope to finish painting grey and black, but those I had found at a garage sale and after a little back and forth I got the two for $25.

More details are in my garage thread.

Hey Joe, that looks great! I need to do something like that, as I have a lot of bulk bolts, nuts, and fasteners that need to be organized in something other than just their boxes.

Thanks all. They have really made a difference in the garage, I hope to be increasing their ability with some leveling feet, and a new top. I also took and demoed the original upper cabinets, and made one with 5 doors. It made a huge difference for my organization. I'm glad I was able to make a spot for my tool box to fit within the wall space rather than rolling around. Eventually that wall will have the same treatment as my other side.

CommanderCarry that is one really nice bench! I bet it weighs a ton too, that's awesome. I wish I could find some bowling lane, haven't had any luck. Good work!

Nothing fancy. It came out of a garden center. I like it because of the tall work surface.

Thanks, Jesse72! You're right, it does weigh a ton, I'm a lousy judge of dead weight, but I would bet 400-500 lbs. 2" thick maple, 40" wide by 6' long. When I showed my wife the finished product, she wanted it for the kitchen table. Unh-unh.
