Lets see your workbench

This is the first time I've seen my entire work bench in nearly two years:

The three holes drilled in the top are for the vise laying on the rolling cart...just waiting for the mounting plate I made to come back from powder coating.

Normally, there's a pile of random parts and fasteners piled everywhere...I like it so much better when it is clean though.

You've got your bench working already. Great job. If I may give some advice for your top shelf. If you use your bench for heavy items or wrench on the vice your spray bottles will have a tendency to fall off unless you put some type of guard.

Taylor, nice garage! But I think you need some wall cabinets. It'll help to keep your workbench clear to actually be used as a workbench and not just a big shelf to put stuff on.

I will warn you that you can NOT use standard metal pegs with this stuff...the holes are too big, and they'll easily fall out, even with the little black hook holder things you can buy. That's why you see the white plastic hooks instead.

No this was the standard years before plastic pipe came along , I installed a lot of it here in Mich. and Colo.

I've never seen copper sewage pipe either, over here before plastic it was cast iron above ground and clay/pot below ground.

You should try some of the Talon Hooks. They are made for 1/4" holes and have a locking pin that holds them in place once installed. To remove, simply unscrew the plastic pin.

It's mostly build from scrap 2x4s. It had to be narrow to accommodate getting the car in to work on, but it seems to suit my needs. I'm still on the look for a vise though.

Refinishing my grandfather's bench. Upgraded the front legs to 4x4s with galvanized post bases. The originals were 2x4s that were rotting on the bottom after being in contact with the concrete for 50 years. Drilled holes on the right side to mount my Columbian No. 4 and i'm currently restoring the big Parker that my grandfather had mounted on the left side. Sanded the top down starting with 60 grit and finishing with 220. I'm going to put danish oil on it when it gets a little warmer.

That's a beauty. Like the backdrop also.

Here's a pic of mine. Made of solid ash. We cut the tree down, planked it and had it kiln dried. It's about 12 foot long...3.5 foot wide.

I must say you guys with your clean workbenches...****!!!.
No really, I truly admire someone who can keep a clean workbench. I for one cant. I havent seen the top of my workbench in a few years. No matter how much I clean the shop up I still cant find it. I have resorted to building temporary benches out of milk crates and plywood when the need arises.

this is what i started to put together this past Sunday not finished yet . All 2x4's peg board and bench top was free from a store closing down i was able to rip them out. The 2 metal cabinets above the bench were also free from another storeThis is also in my shed/work shop since i do not have a garage as of yet planing to build one soon

Thanks. It's a work in progress. The Audi is my DD, so anything that gets piled on falls off pretty quickly.

I documented a bit of this on my garage rebuild, But basically I have built a double shadow board, the front board houses general engineering tools, so I don't have to open tool box drawers, and the back board houses wood working tools. I have used a closet slider that is mounted on the underside of the storage shelf, enough talk here are some pics,

That sliding peg board is very cool. Might do something similar for my tools as wall space is a serious issue for me.

I like that sliding peg board, but I love the tool boxes even more. I really like TopTuls color scheme, I wish we could get it here in the States. I have a few of their hand tools and I like them a lot.

It is a double sided roller so 4 rollers on each pivot point so there is no wobble.

Yeah I like the colour scheme a change from the red. Its very similar to the stahlwille colour scheme but with out the Stahwille price. This is one of the brands that my company sells and I am more than happy with the quality of the product.

The important thing is how quickly it can go from messy back to clean. A bench ought to get filled up when you're using it. But if it's still cluttered up after the work is done and you're starting the next job, then it's an obstacle, in my opinion.

I'm not a clean and tidy worker. Which is why I have ten benches in a two-car garage.

The quicker it goes back to clean, though, the better the design.

I often have more than one work project on the go - some long term, so my workbench often stays cluttered. Perhaps more than one work bench might be a good idea.

Not just Jack O, but I think most of the board would disagree. Most of the work benches here seem immaculate. For some reason Jan's workbench (and others like it) just appeal to me. Its probably just a case of different strokes...

Current bench. Nice and strong. 4x4 legs, 2x6s under Masonite and 3/4 plywood. First time I've seen it clean in a while.

It will be replaced soon with a workbench based on steevo's design but with Mac tool boxes.
