Let's just say my neighbors aren't the type of people to need a potting bench. I've done all the yard work and outdoor upkeep.
Personally? I like doing it because it gives me a break from my day job in a cube farm.

Counting down the days till I can move out to a single family...

Take that little bench with you...almost surprising how soon a bench comes in handy while still moving in...

Nice car! Not much room for it in the garage though, it's a BIG car. That's a good sized bench, and I like the steel surface. I could really use to do something like that with my bench.

A 17.5"x19" worktable that I can sit down at with cast iron plates on a 3" laminated ply & mdf top which bolts and unbolts to my bench. It is about 60-70 lbs.

After being inspired by all the nice workbenches already posted, I decided to build one of my own. I don't have a garage and I live in a 3 unit condo so the basement is shared space. I had to be careful not to take over too much space before people start complaining. I was getting tired of doing projects on the coffee table (as was my wife ) so I just went for it. The frame is made up of 2x4s and the top/backsplash/shelves are all 1/2" MDF. The bench height is about 45" due to me being 6'3". The floor slopes a bit so its not exact, but it level all the way around which I'm happy about. Roughly $50 in supplies later, I have a pretty decent bench. I may or may not paint it in the future but for now its fine as is. Still need to run some electrical to it but I ran out of time last weekend.

Great use of a less-than-ideal space! I suggest you bathe the mdf top and bottom with BLO/Turpentine/Varnish to keep glue from sticking and prevent minor water damage. It will be stinky for a few days though.

HF 44" box & drawer extension, and a 6ft Gladiator work bench which I picked up for $27 from sears outlet.com, with the help of a severely incompetent order pickup clerk at the sears I picked it up from.

OK, a few benches for my workshop:
1. Recovered from the kitchen of a house demolished to build new house -- painted black over natural pine stain, top from 1X10 shiplap with 1/8" hardboard cover.

2. Recovered door from same demolished house but hinged to be drop-down bench.


3. Two benches (large and small) constructed to allow chop saw or small table saw to be placed in between -- used leftover material from shop construction including 4X6 rough cut for frame, 1X10 shiplap for top, plus purchased 1/8" hardboard cover. Had to add "drop-down" casters so they could be moved; larger weighed in over 200 lbs.

4. Metal bench from stint as robotics team mentor for high school team. A colleague made the bench with SS top and casters. Our team had the sturdiest benches at the competition! They were convenient, too; we packed toolboxes, parts, and material on the top and shelf and rolled then into the pits. He fabricated three of them; I could only barter for one with the school principal.

5. A potting bench -- well, it's a workbench, of sorts -- fabricated similar to #3, above for The Wife's Christmas present.

Nice setup. Do you use the jigs behind the press for routing dadoes?

Alan, the jigs you are talking about are for the router. The right is for dado's (ShopNotes design) and the smaller on the left is just to route adjustment slots.

I wanted a solid work surface, and had planned to pick up a maple bench surface from sears, but when i went to pick the surface up, the clerk rolled out the gladiator bench already assembled & simply said "here u go." I dont think he realized that he was giving me an entirely different item, which a MUCH higher price point.

Here's one I made a few years ago. Its 8' long and about 28" wide. The top is oak 2x8's, the legs are oak 4x4's and its on casters. These days it doesn't look as good as it did when it was new in the photo, but I've been beating on it a lot of years.

Here is my back wall. Almost 27' should have the 16 gage broke metal top for it in a day or so. It will have a 2" back splash and 2" nose over the edge.

There will be more to come along another wall for a designated reloading area as well as a designated Archery bench.

Then a welding bench between the double front double doors.
