I dont mean this with any disrespect, but you guys with your "Clean garages" make me sick. If you look at my garage you would wonder how in the hell does anything get done in here...Props to you guys who can keep a clean garage, and to the guys like me who have too much **** going on at one time to keep the garage clean....leave it the way it is...You know where your **** is.

Jeff

A clean and organized garage helps you get work done faster. When my garage is messy I don't want to even go in there and I get frustrated when I can't find my the tool I need because it's buried under a pile it ****.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm the same way, problem is I don't have a workbench built yet so I have little room to put stuff.. The workbench (12ft) will be the next project.

This is absolutely true!! Unfortunately, I don't have the discipline to keep my work spaces clean and tidy; hence, I suffer a high level of frustration !!

This my in progress workbench.
The tool box drawers are all over the place because I've been trying to decide exactly how to mount it under the workbench. Half the workbench is leaning up against it at I can't feet to anything. Very frustrating. I need to get this done in the next few weeks and get organized. I can't wait to have it done and put all the tools where I can find them easily. It was actually clean for about 10 minutes the other day!
Steel table is 3/4" thick x 4' x 8' x 40" high. The base is all 2" square thin wall tube.

The kegerator & dry erase board are my design center.

The counter in the background is framed up with 2x4s & I reused our old kitchen countertops & sink

I just built this on Sunday. I took the idea for mounting the air hose reel horizontally underneath from another member here. It's my first attempt at a bench.

Love the colour combo you've used: vintage military with old-wood stain. The metal brackets tell me it's a new build. Very nicely done!

What did you use to finish the workbench?

Thanks a lot! I really like the military olive green too. I used MinWax stain Dark Walnut on the bench and a semi-gloss poly on the bench top as well. Its only about a year old and is holding up pretty well. The build is outlined in my signature link also.

Still working on mine and am going to add a laminated 2" Maple top. But, here's what I've done thus far for a joint work bench / outfeed table / storage center.

It's rock solid and heavy as an elephant. So, regardless of the task that I ask of it, it won't be sliding around. As you can see it has extra large drawers on heavy duty full extension slides:

I used Sapele for the drawer fronts as I liked the contrast of dark wood with the SPF.

Here's a workbench I threw together a while back. I mounted pegboard above the table on the wall with peg hooks for various hand tools that I use regularly. I capped off the bottom of the support legs with 1/4" plate, drilled/tapped holes for 1/2-20 coarse thread bolts and added adjustable machinery feet because my shop floor slopes so much.

My benches are kinda like yours but for the levelers I used nuts and ground them down to fit in the square tubing and welded them in and then used bolts. If you do that you need to have the bolts in the nuts when you weld them to keep them from distorting .

Mine also has reclaimed 2x4s in it. Got tired of having 2 separate benches so I made one large one with trailer hitch receivers. I also built a mobile stand with the same receivers in it so I can move my grinders, buffers, wheel changer and vise wherever I need them. Still need to figure out what to do under the wood bench. I'm thinking maybe a parts drawer and a rolling tool shelf on the ground.

Yep, that's what cool about fabrication. So many different ways to meet the same goal.

I'm terrible at building wood projects, but I can build just about anything from metal. Wood has too much fudge factor for me. With steel, it has to be spot on or its in the crapper.

First post, and first bench build. I'm replacing the old, not very sturdy bench that was left by the previous owner. It's 2 feet deep and only about 30 inches tall - way too short for me. I definitely took some ideas from GJ so I figured I'd share.

Legs are 4x4, notched to mate with the shelf and top frames. The shelf is a 2x4 frame with two 2x10s and 1 2x8. The top is a 2x6 frame with 2 2x12s and 1 2x10, covered with a sheet of plywood. The front and rear have about 3.5 inches of overhang, and the side has 8 inches of overhang. The finished height is 38 inches and it's 32 inches deep. The vise is not yet mounted, but that's where it'll go.

This was my first project with the Dewalt DWS780 saw, and I must say it was a pleasure to use.

I just need so figure out how to mount the lower toolbox to the workbench. Right now the workbench is built with just a 2x4s upper frame and lower left cabinet lagged to the walls. It's solid but I'm going to add some legs and more supports.

My wife and I bought a new house last year and had our first child. So, my bench is in the planning stages. Here are some sketches of preliminary design considerations.

My current plans for a bench include:

- 15' x 24" worktop
- fits along the back wall of my garage so that 2 cars can park inside (2 car garage on the small side)
- two 6' bench sections hinged on a 3' stationary section. The 6' sections rotate 90 degrees forming an island workspace approximately 8' x 4'
- the workbench will be biased to one side of the garage so that when in island configuration, only one parking stall is occupied. (My goal for the garage floor plan is for all tools and workspaces to fit this criteria).
- would like a good standing height worktop. I'm 6' 1", so around 48" should work for standing or sitting on a standard bar stool.
- shelving below the top will be accessible from front and rear and will have a lip on the front and rear edges so that items do not fall when converting back and forth from wall bound to island configuration.
- I'm considering leaving an open cavity sufficient for an integrated rollaway toolbox when in the wall bound configuration. The toolbox would be freestanding against the wall when in island mode.
- either a metal or finished hardwood top of about 400lb capacity.
- hoping to use recycled and/or repurposed materials to keep costs low.

This image shows some ideas I had for a dust collection port, either in the table top, or as a garage type chute placed along back rail. Also, an apparatus that allows the ends of the bench to lift and rotate. d89aca6ba172c81eabe33299f85c2d85.jpg
Showing an idea I had for a sliding top that uses a channel groove with a tongue track welded to the bottom of plate steel. This would allow the top to slide lengthwise so that the bench can pivot. ad05292d0aa6b41b1d95304bbf97be6f.jpg

I'm just getting started with the design phase, though I already have a lot of good ideas. My plans may change as materials are obtained (inexpensively).

That's a beefy bench! I bet it weighs a ton with the 2x4's on edge and a steel top. That's a great idea, what is the thickness of the steel top? I like the idea of the receiver hitches on the bench but also on a stand alone so you can have versatility.

Veeps, that's great how you built the upper cabinets around the drill press, very cool and I like the door hinges and hardware on the cabinets too! Nice work!

Thanks, it took months of staring at the cabinets and toolboxes which I had to work with to finally get it setup the way I wanted.

Here's the other workbench with is to the left of the large one, and separated by a door.

I still have to decide if I want to keep that larger toolbox on the bench taking up workbench area, or move it. I'm leaning towards moving it.

hey do you mind posting a photo of how you mounted your trailer hitch receivers?

I resurrected an old steel bench frame, the top was shot. I had 2 sheets of OSB. Cut 36 x 72 and laminated 3 layers with glue/screws. Topped it with a piece of 3/4" horse stall mat.
Great solid surface, handles heavy car parts, and cleans well.
