I snapped a few more pictures. Got a picture of the socket cubbies. I keep go to 1/4" and 3/8" sockets nice and handy. In the same picture you can see the foot pump that raises the bench. When fully raised, the top is just over center so it can't really settle. To lower it while pushing the release pedal, the top needs a slight push to go. There is a little built in trash bucket which makes bench clean up quick. Last picture shows the holding rod for propping push mowers up to get to the underside. The quick history of the bench, my Grandfather built it in the 50's. Story goes he saw in add for one in a trade magazine and wrote for info. He was sent directions on how to build one, not exactly what he expected. Pretty much made out of scrap iron, the pump and cylinder came out of the junk yard too. I really lucked out getting. When Pa said he was having an auction, I told him I wanted it. He didn't really want to give it to me, but as the date grew closer, he agreed. Even thou it was suppose to be omitted from the auction, it accidentally got sold. Pa got the the guy to agree to sell it back for the $400 it brought. It now the center piece of my shop. One last picture, the bench in Pa's shop.

Hi BCD,
What a great story to follow a super bench.
Great idea and a great build, made to last (70 plus years).
Fair deuce to the guy to agree to sell it back. You must have been overjoyed.
Just thinking about it you can put stuff on when it's down and then lift the whole system. Great idea.
Love the socket cubbies. I'm going to borrow that idea for my bench. Never thought of it but now when Ives seen it, it makes perfect sense.
Trash bucket is a great idea too.

Richie

I resurrected an old steel bench frame, the top was shot. I had 2 sheets of OSB. Cut 36 x 72 and laminated 3 layers with glue/screws. Topped it with a piece of 3/4" horse stall mat.
Great solid surface, handles heavy car parts, and cleans well.

You'll probably want to put some edging on that, or the OSB will be trying to grab your clothes and give you splinters.

I just happened to catch the New Yankee Workshop where they talk about that cabinet. Apparently it used to hang in the Smithsonian.

Here is a bench I am working on. Built with kreg jig HD. I am putting polyurethane on the to and painting the bottom. I need to add the shelf on the right side yet.

Apologies if the picture hasn't come up - this is my first post on here!

Having just moved into my first house, I managed to convince my wife that sorting out the garage was a priority!

I found an old tool chest on eBay for £30 which was then used as a starting point for the bench dimensions. A section of 2nd hand kitchen worktop and I was finally able to start building! I then painted and bolted it to the floor and the wall for extra stability. The very last touch was to attach my old record no.24 vice which I'd previously restored (another post on it's way!)

So here's the bench I built...

This bench is my second one using this design. Doors and legs are powder coated. There is a base shelf inside the bottom cabinets that I may put sliding trays on to reduce the effort to look into the back of the compartment. The bench is 30" deep, 36" high and is 24' long. The top is made of 2- 12' tops made of 0.060 steel with wood framing and plywood support. An open space is under the middle of the bench to allow for extended sitting and chair storage. The second picture is my mobile bench which shares many of the design attributes of the fixed bench including height to allow "docking" of the mobile bench. The top is 1/4" steel and the construction is all steel. I plan to build one more bench that is 12' long in another section of the shop. I need more bench space so I can start more projects that I don't finish ;)

Thought I was relocating so I sold my two Lyon laminate top workbenches, not moving so I'm starting over.
Picked up some tops from Bally Block Co. in Bally, PA (30min. from me) and waiting for frames.
Maple tops, 84"x32.5"x2.25" (3) very minor surface scratches $125ea. and 96"x35"x1.75" (1) very heavy scratches/broken edge $50.
Planning on doing basic frames for two of the tops and cutting up the 96 for back splashes and lower shelving, not sure what to do with the third top but, I'll think of something.

Love the modular welding bench. I've been wanting something like that for a while but I need to make some changes to my current configuration so I have room to store it.

That's my problem also. Bought a 58 VW single cab pickup and used it as an extra workbench/"get to it later" storage. With the side gates and tail gate down the single cab is the perfect height. Just leave the lumber in the bed and do all the cutting on the truck bed.

That's pretty much my bench but mine is at the back of the garage so no moisture problems. Might I suggest T-nuts with bolts on the bottom or just use treated lumber for the legs.

I love the basic design of cleating to the wall studs. It's cheap and plenty rock solid. It also saves space and looks less cluttered because it is. Mine has stood up to the challenge for at least 8 years now. http://i.imgur.com/wwW0yAe.png

Hey jrc is that a heater system under your bench. If so is that a natural gas or electric one?

NG vented straight through the wall. Heat blows right down at your feet and/or under a vehicle to be worked on. Great for running out and cranking up to work on a short project or leave t-stat controlled for longer periods. Never understood mounting a heater up high (unless venting layout requires it)??? ...I didn't place my A/C on the floor.

Only a Garage Dude or Dude'ette would understand the interest in admiring an old workbench with years of this and that in/on/around it....
I found this on CL, I'm going to change the color before I bring it in the shop...just what color...??? I don't know yet./

MV...Hmmm never thought green. I had considered the classic combo of red drawers and grey frame. I've got a few other tool/parts storage items that need the same colors. Just so my shop doesn't continue to look like a multi-family yard sell... I'm trying to tie some stuff together.

great white... Thanks, I thinking I'll enjoy it. couldn't beat the price. $75

My Addition to the thread - I Have a few round my little workshop - all covered in ****, this was my fathers original bench - its older than I am with plenty of abuse over the years. I want to repaint the base and give the old railway sleeper tops a good sand... They have lasted so well I wouldn't want to replace them

^ Nice, Knyte. Great to see a bench that old still holding up and being used. Hopefully my son will be beating on my bench one day. Give it a little cleanup, and it looks like it will be good for another few decades.

This first bench was from my last house in Virginia. I used it all the time!

And this one is one I made out of our old hog show box and some 2x2 strips we had laying around when I was in a pinch for a table top and dad likes it so we kept it

Don't you love the manufacturer supplied crankshaft stand?

The flywheel.

I also see the Drexel weed killer I buy at Rural King. $20/concentrated gallon goes on forever and ever. I'm talking like 50 gallons of spray weed killer.

The crank is from a 454 I've tore down and plan to build into a 496 stroker
The weed killer lasts about two sprayings with 5 acres fenced in, I love the cat bench, has the bolt bin holders build in, only problem is the shelf with the Pistons is slanted so I had to get creative on how to level it, 2x4 with plywood made it level,
I'd throw an engine on any except the cheap menards bench since it build so light,
But they all get used alot
