I like that long, articulated lamp, 3798j.

Thanks Dragfluid. In the '50's to 60's, there wasn't a drafting table around that didn't have one attached. It's a Dazor "Floating Arm". For me, light coming from behind me doesn't help much...this lets me shine it right on my work.

jeffmoss26 Is that a solder station on the bench ? Never used one are they so you can regulate the heat or do they do much more ?

Mine is a very basic solder station - just has temperature control. It's a Parts Express clone of the Weller WLC 100 (which I used to have) I kept burning up the elements by plugging the iron directly in the wall when soldering in the field. Oops!

What type of fluorescent bulb do they use? I'd love to find one for my new bench if I can get a LED conversion bulb installed without too much hassle.

Circuit Specialists has some really nice soldering stations. I forget the model I have but it was a Hakko clone. Been running great for 8+ years now.

I do believe that's a Henry-J nose I see behind that motor?

Why yes it is, just had a whole new chassis built, switched to straight axle and switching it to big block chevy.

Thanks. Plenty of vintage Dazor floating lamps on eBay... and I recognized the color and power buttons. My folks had a single bulb Dazor desk lamp with the weighted base when I was growing up in Louisville. The one with the two flexible arms to hold the light. So I definitely need to buy a couple of those vintage lights for my hobby workshop area.

I bought one of those Dazor at a Estate Sale for $5, my plans was to use it at my bench when i get it cleared off. It's currently clamped to the bench but can't use the bench with all of the stuff on it while I'm organizing the shop.

Here’s mine. 2x6/2x8 framed/decked with 4x4 legs. 9’x30” work surface. One side has a shelf underneath while the other side has an opening for the new tool box I plan on getting soon. Once I️ get the toolbox and figure out my final finish height on the bench I’ll be adding casters to help me move it if/when we move again. This thing is heavy so I’d rather not have to pick it up lol

Built one with my son over Thanksgiving.

Pretty basic 4x4 and 2x4 construction. They don't stock 1-1/8 plywood sub flooring in Utah. They only have the oriented strand board. That won't make much of a work top, so I doubled up some 3/4" CDX.

Went to Home Depot to rent a truck and pick up the material, but no plywood subfloor, so I went across the street to Lowes. Scooped up a 4x8 sheet of pegboard. Then drove to his house in the Home Depot truck with all the material from Lowes.

Nothing to write home about. Just an old counter I scooped up from my old job when they remodeled the store.
I do like the length of it though and plan to mirror in on the other side one of these days.

It's functional, that's what counts. Looks good, lot's of storage space.

Why yes it is, just had a whole new chassis built, switched to straight axle and switching it to big block chevy.

Very cool.

I had a 51 Henry-J 'Gasser' back around 1971. Had a Silver metallic paint job and black bucket seats. It had a Ford dropped straight axle on the front. Running a Big Block Chevy 409 with a Powerglide trans w/floor shifter and a Pontiac rear end.

I had it registered and licensed on the street. Barely a day would go buy I wasn't challenged by some guy at a stop light. Always blew them away. Usually leaving them smoking their rear tires as my Henry would just lift the front end up and put all that torque to the rear wheels and hooking up no problem!

Regrettably I sold it just before I had to leave for the U.S. Marine Corps.

Its one of the cars I wish I still had.

I built this for my repair shop using 2 Craftsman boxes and some 1 1/2" x 3" rectangular steel.

tarmy great looking setup. I like the idea of the pull down window "covers" to keep out prying eyes. I opted for no windows, but that looks interesting.

Below is my current bench, and my father in law admiring my daughter’s new bunny hutch in the background.

I scored this sweet 6’ “bench” at Costco for about 40 bucks. I have a second “bench” that I use at times when I need more space. They are light, easy to store when not in use, and amazingly durable - so long as you don’t hammer on them, of course.

In reality though, I’m in the process of finishing the garage and building a proper bench against the wall. Hopefully I’ll have it all built before winter is over... these pics are just proof that I use my garage. ;)

I will probably catch hell over this statement, but I always say what I feel

some of those SO CALLED work benches have never seen a drop of oil or a spec of dirt.

there are there to place food and drink on to entertain your guests because you don't want your friends in your house

One thing to consider - most of the guys posting pics of their workbenches in this thread are posting pics they took right when they finished building them. So yes, they probably have never seen a drop of oil or spec of dirt because they've never actually been used at the point in time the picture was taken.

I say live and let live... if the only work someone ever does on their workbench is mix a cocktail, that's their own business. That shouldn't stop them from posting their pics and sharing their ideas.

The substate is MDF (2 - 3/4" sheets) and then blue laminate on top. This is old school kitchen counter style of countertops.

I bought this from a surplus store at a previous employer - it's a former lab bench for testing computer equipment. Welded steel frame, roller bearing drawers, and switched power in the posts holding up the top shelf. Since taking this picture, I've bolted a Yost vise to its corner on the left.

It's not huge, but for the minimal amount of money I paid for it, I'm really happy with it.

LOL, if I posted a pic of what my workbench usually looks like, you wouldn't be able to see much of the bench at all! Always lots going on, and can always use more bench space!

Wow I love this. I would buy a bunch of them if they were near me!

WOWOW I just looked on your album and they had what looked like tall lista boxes. I hope you snatched them up!

It's a weird story.

I worked at this same campus - a massive, sprawling place belonging to a large company that most people have heard of - from 1997 through about 2008. Some of the buildings are just being used as storage now, compartmentalized into chain-link storage cages full of unused lab equipment.

When I came back to that campus in 2014, of course I had to go look for all that old stuff, and the surplus store. It was still there, and the "surplus store" was being managed by the same guy! I couldn't believe it. Usually the stuff that turned up there was junk, but occasionally you could luck up.

Over the years, they'd gotten wise to the fact that there was more money in selling the stuff to specialist vendors, who in turn marked it up by a lot for sale to other companies. I was able to sweet talk him into selling some of it directly to me though. Because this deal was kind of an off-the-books thing, I didn't want to be greedy. The two tall Vidmar cabinets and the bench are what was offered, so I chose to not press my luck.

It's way more storage than I need. Many of the drawers are just full of those little plastic bins, because I don't have nearly enough tools to fill up two, 5' tall Vidmar cabinets.
