My random **** bench in my garage, truck doesn't fit so I figured I'd do something with the space.

Mostly use it for little projects that I don't feel like doing at the shop, like tonight, tearing a pressure washer down and fixing a 1,000# chain hoist. The bottom shelf has become a catch all for stuff that either came out of my truck and that's as far as it went or stuff I grab frequently like the shop vacs.

Built out of some narrow pallet racking and some square tube from a conveyor we ripped down. 2 sheets of 3/4" ply the roofers left behind from the same job. A nice $0 project.

I've begun a new endeavor so a new bench was in order. Just started shooting competitively in F Class so needed a reloading bench. My own design after much research. Base is all milled 2x lumber. Top is 2 - 3/4" mdf layers with a 3/4" almond melamine top layer. Also edge banded with milled 2x material. The HF box cab and the drawer cab are 3/4" cabinet grade ply. 1/2" baltic birch runners in the HF cab and 1/2" baltic birch drawers on 100lb full ext. slides and 1/4" almond melamine bottoms in the drawer cab. Press and vise are attached with hand screws thru holes in the top with screw on tee nuts underneath. Hutch is more cabinet grade ply with ine edgebanding and 1/4" almond melamine back. Fun project. Just some sanding a d few coats of wipe on poly from being completed and moving into my gun room.

wow that's absolutely beautiful! do you have any up close pics of how you built the rack for the containers? im looking to do something similar.

Thanks! I stole the idea from threads on GJ. :D

Basically a series of grooves cut 3/8" deep into 3/4" plywood with 1/2" plywood runners.

The runners...

I made the box to fit the lower shelf on my bench so it's deeper than it needs to be.

Couple of pieces of plywood act as stops for the back of the boxes.

Assembled box.

I edgebanded the front with pine to match the rest of the bench.

My dimensional scribbling. There is a mistake on the side dimension. It's actually 18 3/4" in my case not 18 1/4" as I have it listed.

There is more general construction info on the bench build thread...

Just put this up today. Still more work to do on it but at least now I can start to put stuff away. Trim and hardboard surface still to come.

It's made out of 8 surplus metal filing cabinets and 3 solid core fire doors.

I finally finished my work bench. Drawers are all metal and are actually 8 two drawer metal filing cabinets I got from surplus. The tops are solid core fire doors I got for free with 3/8" hardboard on top. The edging is 1X3 strapping.

The removable work bench is an old metal desk I, again, got from surplus. Big heavy solid *******. It's on casters.

Hopefully this satisfies my needs for a while. I am still trying to figure out how and where to mount my vise/vises.

After a sand down and restain, followed by a coat of “glaze coat” epoxy. I think it turned out awesome. The epoxy is about 1/8” and super glossy.

AngryBeaver - that top is way to nice for a garage/working shop! Nice job! How does that epoxy surface hold up? You mentioned it was 1/8” thick.

If it's only a workbench NOT a welding bench , I like laminating 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood with a formed front and backslash utilizing 16 gauge galvanized steel.

its about 1/8" thick. so far seem awesome. doesnt seem to scratch or chip. but lets be honest, it isn't a "work bench" where it will see heavy abuse.

I used this as a test before doing the 12' worth of lista cabinets and bench I will be doing. heavy work will be reserved for my 4x8 welding table/fab bench

To all the guys with metal tops, what thickness would you recommend for it?

welding, with a big vise, or general purpose light duty?

for a general purpose bench, 1/4" is ok. will hold a decent vise and not tweak when wrenching or pounding on stuff.

I myself prefer 1/2" or thicker. I weld, use big *** pipe wrenches, and lots of massaging with large thumb detectors

Thanks for the input guys, looking to do a small but fairly heavy duty bench. Figure 2’ x 5’ made from pallet racking. I plan to put a small vice on it and I suppose it would be nice to weld on now that it’s been mentioned.

Here’s an approximately 2’x6’ bench I made for my sheet metal area using pallet racking frames and beams. I dropped short lengths of 2x6’s between the frames and capped it with 16 gauge galvanized for the top.

It is easily moved with a pallet jack or can be easily dismantled in minutes.

I have seen this bench several times on the internet. It was linked back to GJ on at least one instance. SOOOO.... who knows about this and how can I get the frame structure to make one for my new bench?

I spy a dental light. I’ve never seen one of those repurposed. I’ll leave all 5 of mine for the new guy when I move on. Less reminders of the daily battle in the trenches I guess.

Nikola - Welcome. I have been tossing a similar idea around in my head for quite some time. Please document your build for all of us when you do.
Thanks
