I'm getting up there in age so I do not have many projects these days. Mostly just vehicle maintenance on the '70 Chevelle and the yard equipment, and other minor projects, so this works for me.

Very nice! My Sherlock Holmes deduction skills tell me you were (or are) a firefighter? I bet that diamond plate always has a good shine on it.

Yes, the decor is indicative of my career of 25 years. My den became too over decorated with this kind of stuff so I moved it out to the garage. It actually works well, it is not as much of a glare scenario as the pictures might seem to indicate. Even with the garage lights and the overhead lights on, I still had to use the flash on the camera to get an acceptable photo. The picture on the right is typical of the level of light I usually get. If the OHD is open on a sunny day the glare from the cabinets can be a problem.

Wow, that's a lotta cherckerplate, looks great!
Looks like your Chevelle is an SS. Kinda looking for a 69 or 70 SS, had both years a long time ago.

Yours a 396 or 454? Stick or auto? Can you post some pics?

Just wanted to swing by and say thanks for all the ideas in this thread. As soon as I get enough posts I'll post my recent workbench build.

My woodworking bench. Made from southern pine bought at Lowe's and HD (depending on who had the best stock at the time). After I cut them the boards would warp/twist overnight. Weighs about 500 lbs.

BlueBomber - What is that waist-shaped vertical piece in the middle of the bench for?

It's a sliding deadman (sometimes called a board jack) for supporting long boards. It moves along the entire front of the bench.

I might use these new to me Brown & Sharpe workbench legs to replace my boring workbench, or I might decide to sell the legs.

Are those legs for a free-standing bench? I've never seen anything like those.

No. They are made for a bench that is against the wall. The back of the legs are to be secured to a wall. The bottom was designed to be away from the wall to clear pipes, etc. They are perfect for anyone with a garage like mine where there is a footing that protrudes away from the wall.

Nice!! Bench dogs, perpendicular vises, board jack ... features often missing from "new" bench builds. They give it a very nice "old school" flavor!

What material did you use for the top?

2x6 southern pine glued up in four sections then combined. Leveled the top pass-by-pass with a router mounted in a jig that glides on boards clamped to the sides. The southern pine, although a soft wood at first, has hardened significantly over the past 4 years due to its high resin content.

Current temporary workbench until I build one. The scaffold works pretty good. Have my grinders and drill press mounted on a roll cart. And that stainless cart is awesome...Great workbench that can moved around, even outside to cut wood or whatever or have a few beers on. It's a Sam's Club.

.......

Those iron legs are awesome!! I've never seen any like that before. One could make a very unique bench with them.

If I needed a new bench for some reason I'd look for a similar set.

Very nice work on the bench, well done.

Are those 4x4's for the bench top? Nice straight grain! Despite the fact that 90% of our Canuck land mass is covered in trees, we only sell pressure treated 4x4's around here.

How are you planning on finishing it?

BTW, thanks for supporting Veritas.

Thx. They start out as 2x6's... planned they look like 2x4's.
I periodically finished with Watco Danish Oil.
Veritas has good bench hardware.

I'm still setting up the garage/shop in our (new to us) house.

My current workbench consists of two 1990's Sears Craftsman metal workbenches.

One 5' long, 2 drawer and one 4' long, 1 drawer connected by a piece of 3/4" plywood to form a 'L' shape work center.

Also a separate 4' long red Craftsman bench set up for drilling and tapping and additional storage for my Dremel tools and supplies.

These benches are pretty heavy duty and can handle most things. However if I need to do some really heavy work I can use my Handy-Lift motorcycle lift as a workbench.

You follow my progress here: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=408052

To any of you guys using butcher blocks and counter tops on top of tool boxes as workbenches, how are you attaching the top to the toolboxes?
