I tried searching but didn't readily see anything on this..

I have a 3800 that is less than 2yrs old. It has been running flawlessly up until about 2 days ago. It did a double take on opening the door. The door went about 6in and stopped, then closed. Hit the button again and worked fine.
Yesterday I got home, hit the remote and the light in the garage came on but the door didn't budge.
I checked it out, the deadbolt will release but the door doesn't move.
Did the diagnostic and I have 5 blinks.. which says the motor may need replacement.
I checked the slack sensor and the door sensors, they seem good. Am I missing something easy, or is it the motor?

Seems like a safety feature that prevent the door's going up, I had an issue with my 3800 one time and was related with something that made it more harder for the motor to pull up the door but since you did it manually without efforts, then I have no clue, but I've not seen much people having motor problems with 3800's.

If the motor is disengaged, does it work ?

I had something similar happen with one of my 3800's. I opened up the opener and found that a set screw on a gear that turns the position sensor had come loose and the opener did not know if the door was open or closed. The way I found the problem was when I turned the motor drive by hand I could see that one gear slipping on it's drive shaft. Sometimes the gear would move, sometimes not, it made the door go up part way sometimes and not at all others.

I just remembered I did a post about it......

Turns out it was the Logic Board..
I had this grandiose notion that if I called a certified installer, he could warranty the part and may even have one with him.. no dice. $130 service fee to tell me the board was bad, I should have never installed one of these units, the warranty is out based on the production date, and if he ordered the part he would have to charge to come back to install...
So I call Chamberland and explain the situation. They quickly ask a few questions, agree that it is the logic board, explain the 5yr parts warranty and ship out the part to me free of charge.
Again, I am let down by a service guy and end up having to do this on my own.
Oh, but he did spray the wheels while he was there...

Time to find a new door co! No way in Hell would I charge someone $130 to tell them what's wrong, then charge to go back to install a part he's going to charge you for...WTF

I would go as far as finding out if he's a distributor or at least a certified repairman and notify Liftmaster of his business practices!

ASSHATS like him just Piss me off.

The only way to stop this type of service is word of mouth I guess. Tell all your relatives, friends, family how this guy/company screwed you.

Moral of story is also start with phone call to MANUFACTURER if still in warranty. Their tech support will be better all around than any GD installer.

Glad you got it fixed. That's the main thing overall.

Reason I reinforced idea to call manufacturer first is great information I got from Whirlpool on my hot water heater. Tech support guy I talked with on phone was terrific (still in warranty). When I went to Lowes, might as well have just pissed in the wind !!
