I want to get 2 Elite 8500 openers. They are supposed to be quiet and save space, so that should work out well. So I am looking at what is included with the unit and I don't see an exterior keypad. That seems weird.

I found this

https://www.liftmaster.com/For-Homes/Accessories/Wireless-Keyless-Entry-System/model-877MAX

Do I have to by this buy this separately when buying this unit? Maybe they expect you to use a smartphone, but when I am working outside I don't have my phone on me.

Thanks for the help.

Most openers don't come with keypads, and when they do they are promo items.

That said, I don't think I have ever seen an 8500 with a keypad, and we sell a bunch of them.

Unless you're dead set on having a local guy install them, do an Ebay search for "Liftmaster 8500" and you'll come up with something like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Liftmaster-...084?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item233d8b7944

You can find package deals with low or free shipping that have all you want.

2 pack:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/8500-2-PACK...AABAAAAKixxABAOAAASQAAANV0IgA=#ht_1294wt_1362

Then just hit Amazon or Ebay for the keypad (operates both openers) and the gateway if you like.

I highly recommend these, they work great.

None of my 3 8500's came with an external keypad. I've never had an opener from any company come with anything more than the wall switch and an in-car remote.

I have the external keypad, the HomeLink repeater, the internet gateway and it's all awesome!

Those of you with Liftmaster 8500s, how is your range on the remotes? I have two for the doors in my shop, and I have a Chamberlin unit on the home garage. (same company) and the Chamberlin beats the **** out of the 8500s on range. The 8500s wont open unless Im right in front of the darn door.

Look at the LM3800 too. It works with the older remote mirrors with out the wireless gateway. It's also cheaper ... looks the same too

Easy self-install, hardest part is routing the sensor wires.

I have two 3800's and one 8500. Bought the keypad for one of the former. I think it was about $35?

You're going to love these openers. ...

If you have a HomeLink mirror in your car before 2010? the 8500 will not work. They may have added some backward compatibility lately though.

Because of ceiling height, 7'-11 1/2", I installed a WD Idrive opener that has now died and I need a replacement. Will the 8500 work given the limited clearance? The garage door only clears the ceiling by 2" at it's highest point of upward travel and ceiling joists run perpendicular so tunnel or trough isn't possible. Are there openers designed for this condition?

I had two of these units installed last Fall. They are indeed quiet and relatively small. They do not come with keypads. I bought those items separately, one for each door, takes about 20 seconds to program one.

Be prepared to buy a 'repeater' (or maybe two). Many vehicles with a remote button do not work with the new technology in the 8500 openers. I had to buy a 'Homelink' repeater for a Cadillac, and I also had to buy a 'Car2u' repeater for a Corvette. Getting all the doors to work with all the various remotes was a PITA.

I really like the wireless lights that come with the 8500's. You can mount them anywhere, and program them for different options. Very nice....

Good luck

I recently built a new home and the garage door folks install to new 8500's. They are super quiet and surprisingly fast. I am sure I paid more than most but they did install exterior keypads included.

This unit does not come with exterior keypads. I bought 3 genie openers about 12 years ago and they all came with keypads. Would have thought that everyone needs to get into the darn garage from the outside at some point but hey, what evs.

I think it depends on where your torsion bar is. I have a 7' door and 8' 4.5" walls (8 foot studs plus one bottom plate and two top plates, each 2x4'4). The LM8500 seems to have about 4" above the center of the torsion bar and my torsion bar is mounted about 5" from the ceiling. You can probably do search for an installation manual to get exact restrictions.

I have six of these and have six more planned. None came with remote keypads. At installation, the installer gave me two keypads at no charge.

To answer later questions in the thread, my reliable range for the transmitter is 500' +/- if I hold it for a full second. Any distance less than that, I can just push the button and the doors move. Curiously, the home-link transmitters built into my cars need to be within 100' to work reliably.

I have added the internet module and converted the main garage light switch to the MyQ version. All of the garage lights come on when 1)remote door opening 2)beam is tripped when walking in 3)switch via the door button 4)light switch 5)remote internet app. The lights turn off by themselves within 5 minutes or remain on if I used the switch or app. I did not use any of the remote lights that came with the units.

Mine will open the doors from the street in front of the house, at least 60 ft away.

The 8500 package doesn't include a keypad, but can had for about $25 on ebay. Since Liftmaster owns Chamberlain or vice versa, call Liftmaster and see if any Chamberlain keypad may work? If so, you can pick one up at HD or Lowe's. Chamberlain also makes Craftsman's garage openers so maybe one of theirs may work. Good choice on the 8500's. They are the best. Set up the app and you can always check if/when the door is open/closed.

My 8500 remotes work as well as my former chamberlain remote worked. The range on the remotes is far better than the Homelink in all my cars.

If you have the Lear Car2U system they no longer make the repeater for Liftmasters. However, Liftmaster now offers one and at a much better price.

https://www.liftmaster.com/For-Homes/Accessories/Remote-Controls/model-CAR2U-RPTR

The distance for my Liftmasters working with my Silverado remote is very short, but it controls my Genie door from a much further distance. Make sure you hold the remote button down for a bit to get reliable operation.
