I plan on doing a few this weekend just to see hit it goes (and how long). Armed with that info I’ll decide if having cards on every drawer makes sense or not or if they’ll be limited to the hardware drawers.

Full transparency - I woke up this morning kinda feeling like cards on every drawer is semi-cheesy. More so printing mini toy like tools on them than the cards themselves. Still noodling
Eh, be cheesy. It'll be fun.

Oh I have things to do. Tonight I started going thru the bolts bins how they ended up after the move. Not good. Many little containers, bags, and such all kinda mixed together.

IMG_5796.jpeg

Some of the bins have bolts that are assembled. Can’t remember what they were for. Something I presume. They are new tho so at some point I must have had a plan.

IMG_5797.jpeg

and I have NEVER used this bolt sizing gizmo before. Gotta say, it’s kinda handy for a task like this. Might find a place for it around the bins.

Yup! At one time I thought I was cool with Brother Ptouch labels then this guy shows up!🤣
I used to be good about it and printed up permanent laser labels with varying font and sometimes I’d really push it going bold 🤘

When we moved all that **** that never got properly labeled got hit with a sharpie….

And I write like a fn drunk doctor on crack with turrets :badteeth:

Since you're rethinking everything anyway I feel brave enough to offer a suggestion that now will no longer result in you hating me forever 😀.

To fully satisfy your OCD (and mine ), I'd - definitely label each drawer and - make the labels business card sized, i. e. just a tad more smaller than your latest iteration, in order to fully match the systainer labels.

You could then even do a 'business card holder' variant, so you could insert custom made paper labels for those drawers with ever changing content and/or lots of various stuff inside (like the "Big Stuff" stuff). The tickness of the backside of this holder would then define how deep you have to sink all of them in the drawer faces.

Well.,,since you brought up business card labels…

The initial, and maybe the final plan, will be to make business card label holders cut on the CNC plasma and formed on the press brake. 3D printing them was just an idea that’s kinda sticking. They’re cooler and, in many ways…cooler, haha

In the size thing. I can’t Fn see anymore. I almost need them bigger more so than like them bigger. I’m in full agreement however, if they were the same size and located the same such that they’d look lined up running down the the rows no matter which order or mix and match if drawer and Systainer, that would be truly bad a$$. Next next level. Maybe still.

Of the things, been messin around with pliers organizers as well. Challenge has always been dealing with the inconsistencies of them between the different models, types, manufacturers, etc. I have a plan for later but want to dabble with modeling and a temporary design now.

Review of where I’m currently at - I’ve machined pliers organizers out of 2” HDPE (on the right in the pic below) that accommodate the various plier lengths and sizes I have. It’s worked remarkably well considering I kinda winged the dimensions (between slots, sloth length, slot depth, etc).

IMG_4098.jpeg

Let me take you along for the ride on how I work thru the design process…Since I’m re-organizing, I feel like I need to make the tools more dense to optimize space so I grabbed some samples of the < 8” length pliers I have.

IMG_5818.jpeg

Pliers wrench (seen pic middle) may be the most amazing pliers I have. Get ‘em if you don’t have them. They’re the go-to always. I’d keep a pair in my pocket in corporate America if it wasn’t weird. 😂

Noticing that the pliers wrench is unique, I’ll worry about a holder for it later. That I want to solve for first is the pliers with handle and obviously narrower nose. First prototype has a step in it that allows the nose of the pliers to sit level in the holder.

IMG_5819.jpeg

First model also has provisions for any pair of pliers less than 8” with cut outs that allow easy access to the handles.

IMG_5822.jpeg

Tried the pliers wrench too for giggles. Looks ok, could work.

IMG_5823.jpeg

I noticed that the organizer doesn’t help keep the upper part of the handle straight and down. This allows a set of pliers slip into the next slot. Decided to create another model that’s taller on the handle end to help in that regard.

IMG_5828.jpeg

But bench testing isn’t good enough. Need to put it into the real world to really get a sense of how it to perform.

IMG_5829.jpeg

Spacing was initially set to match my existing organizers (cheap on Amazon, ~$25). After a little fiddling, I decided that the spacing may not be ideal. It’s kinda hard to quickly grab the pie I’m wanting. They’re just too tight together.

IMG_5830.jpeg

One of the benefits of having a 3-D printer is that I can make any adjustment. So I increased the space to be about double which ended up being way better.

In the interest of space, have you considered reversing pliers?
If you make the gray bin wider, but reverse every other plier, the handles will be opposite and give you the finger space you want.

Hm. I might try that. Wondering if my OCD will struggle with them not facing all the same direction.

Amazing work, my OCD approves... Based on your recommendation about the Pliers Wrench, I had to go get my first one of those... (I say first, because obviously I will now need more). - I bought some soft jaws to go with them, and it seems to me that the little void you have in that drawer would be a perfect space to store those... - Just a thought.

Same thing popped into my head!
Well, yes and no. I thought if that too but none of the pliers wrenches in this drawer have the jaws that fit the soft jaws. They’re older. The soft jaws are only on the garage side because I use them primarily for adjusting the powder coated control arms on the jeeps…but I might just stir them here. I don’t swap them out much. It’s a good idea.

Not sure if you have the snap ring style pliers with the various pin inserts, but the void would work for storing those as well.

+2 on the tweezer storage idea!
I do...but I didn't work any of the snap ring pliers into that drawer. They go over on the "speed shop" side (aka the garage side). I will utilize that recommendation over there tho, great idea!

I’ve been working on some new drawer organizers now exclusively in Fusion 360. Im starting to tackle some of the more frustrating things to grab. An example is the collets for the rib-nut gun. I was keeping them in a cup like thing which caused all the parts to more or less stay mixed up. That then encouraged me to keep the most common ones in the drawer outside the cup which allowed parts to get scattered in the drawer. No more.

IMG_5670.jpeg

Next is the hole saw drawer. Most of my hole saws are Morse with the integrated shank. They’re awesome for fabrication but totally **** to store. I’ve resorted to storing them face down which does work well but also scratches the snot out of the drawer itself which drives me nuts. These organizers allow me to store them face up. I’m still working on the Tetris of them and will like change the size of a few to better interlock but I’m close. After going thru the collection I realized I’m about 5 short of a full set 5/8” - 4 3/8” so I went ahead and ordered the remaining few. You might be wondering what the heck I need with so many hole saws…well before CNC router I fabricated templates for repeat operations and used a hand router.

IMG_5666.jpeg

Next up are the tap drawers. I have a **** ton of taps but it turns out I have way less of specific ones that I thought (like taper taps). Instead of having to refer to a drill tap chart I decided to add those details to the trays themselves.

IMG_5535.jpeg

Add that detail, and keeping the drills and taps right next to each other (instead of above/below like in the old shop), it should be way faster to get the setup I need for any given thread.

IMG_5539.jpeg

This drawer will give you an idea of what I’m shooting for but will need to be tweaked more than a little before it’s done because some of the organizers I printed I don’t need. E.g. I’ll always have spiral point and spiral flute taps in every size because I use them primarily in the knee mill and tapping arm. Tapers I like for starting threads when power tapping on the lathe (tho only really good in larger sized taps). That said, I never buy taper taps so I have way less than I used to which eliminates the need for having a dedicated place for them.

IMG_5545.jpeg

Last for how, Celco organizer. Cleco’s are a rarely used tools for me because I rarely do sheet metal work. I’ve been content keeping them in a little cardboard tray in the corner of a drawer but always disliked the digitization of doing so. This will be way better and make reaching for them enjoyable.

IMG_5671.jpeg
If you are willing I would love to have that Celco file. You’ve inspired me to give gridfinity a go and put my X1C to work. Keep crushing it!

Lots going on, will update here soon. Until then, here’s a snapshot of the garage side which is now nearly complete layout-wise.

IMG_5919.jpeg

Primary reason for getting it wrapped up was to make space for all the vehicles. It’s hail season in Colorado now and I’m not getting hail damage this year.

IMG_5922.jpeg

If I’d layed out the cabinets differently I could have easily had permanent parking for all 5. This will do seasonally. I’m able to park the JK (white Jeep) daily with no issue. Yellow Jeep is just wide enough it would be difficult to back out without moving the tractor. Good news is Andrew is still up at college so it can stay put for now.
