Got the powder coating booth hung last night. Have been having challenges lifting cabinets in place without my Son around so I purchased one of the 1k hydraulic lift carts from Harbor Freight.

IMG_2593.jpeg

It works better once I figured out the right amount of shim to put under one end so that the cabinet was level on the slight (drainage) decline of the floor.

IMG_2592.jpeg

Needed to add a 2x4 under each end to get to to the needed height of 38”. It was a good initial use-case for this lift cart, I now have some ideas for how to modify it to work better in this application.

IMG_2619.jpeg

What was the best was not needing to balance it on a wall cleat while also drilling and fastening it to the wall. I started by adding one fastener to one side, removing that side’s support, and then final leveling by lifting/lowering the other with the lift cart as needed. Then drop it out of the way.

IMG_2620.jpeg

End to end it was much easier.

but, you can't help but make the last 100' look as good as the rest. Earlier peanut galley comments aside, excellent job Matt.

I trust you lined up all the screw heads and used a level on the boxes. 😁
Well…does one tighten the conduit set screw and then check for level on the box and conduit or first check for level and then tighten then conduit set screw? If you really want level you’re doing it like 3-5 times because the set screw moves everything around when you tighten it…

😂

I drove through your neighborhood on 12/24 and spotted the JK and LJ sitting on the driveway and the garage door was up. Drove into the culdesac, but didn't see anyone outside, so I moved onward towards home. Your place looks great!

Ah bummer. Haven’t been outside much other than to move sand and plow. Otherwise I’m in the shop. Give me a heads up next time you’re in the neighborhood and I’ll time it and intentionally poke my head out as you drive thru. I’ll PM you my cell again if you didn't save it 20 years ago. 😂

Been busy working on the house. Made a mad dash to get the island rebuilt for Christmas but didnt make it for a variety of reasons but it was awesome to be in fab mode again this time with space!

IMG_2667.jpeg

All of the base cabinets are constructed out of uv-clear coated Baltic birch. The build went fairly quickly now that I can have everything set up at once.

IMG_2696.jpeg

Even better, I had space to lay them out as I went and see it come together. Being able to do so helped me catch a few things that needed tweaks earlier than what unusually catch them - install.

IMG_2694.jpeg

The only downside to squeezing the build in now is the shop really isn’t ready to go but as I do, I deal with it. Still better than the old garage by 1000%.

With the cabine bases built, I started in on install. Had to spend a minute figuring out wheew the radiant tubing is in the floor below and somehow guessed correctly. Nuts.

IMG_2701.jpeg

The I cut out the old drain setup and rebuilt it since it was an ugly mess of plumbing someone should be embarrassed of.

IMG_2703.jpeg

I rebuilt it primarily so it would be as out of the way as I can get it so we can run as many drawers as possible below the sink. Had to relocate the Pex lines, electrical, and drains to the back of the cabinet. More or less,
Everything. It’s about as compact and rear-located as I could get it without doing some unnatural ****. I realized while fitting the PvC that there’s so many situations where I get to do tube work in life.

image.jpg

I’ll make a floor for this cabinet to his all that junk below. Chose to do it this way so I could have access as needed instead of the traditional model where there isn’t any at all.

Added in a filtered water faucet to overcome the fridges lack of one. The fridge has a water line and a filter for ice but now water…dos t make much sense to me hut it is what it is. The second faucet in the sink is way better anyway. It’s fed with a 3/8” line and fills a glass twice as fast as any fridge I’ve ever had.

IMG_2729.jpeg

Tried to install the dishwasher but found out the drain pump is shot. That should have been disclosed by the PO (maybe refer to him as AHole going forward)…so I ordered a new one, it’ll be here Wednesday.

IMG_2731.jpeg

Started in on the temp counter top. Plan was to fab ine the final size and then laminate it with left over laminate from the office project in 2020.

IMG_2725.jpeg

Got it fabricated, routed the corners, and realized the left over sheet is too small. Dang it…orders one. It’ll be here Friday. So close…

Other honorable mentions…. On December 31st Andrew and I moved out of the storage unit. The 40x60 at RV Vault, as far as I’m concerned, was the key to finding the new house. Had we not gone all in on a storage unit and paid in full for a year, we never would have found a house…(yeah it’s BS but you gotta admit it’s somewhat ironic isn’t it?!?)

IMG_2704.jpeg

Also, when attempting to install one of the shelves 8’ high I kinda missed a rung and dropped it. No biggie, the festool dust collector went into hero mode and tried to catch it.

IMG_2633.jpeg

Given we were between houses kinda during the holiday season we didn’t really decorate. First time since we were married we only had a tree. The up side? Tear down was easy. Still, we ended up getting just past the top and decided to have a night cap…then thought maybe we could spread out the tear down one piece of the tree each month after Christmas. So January? The lights do work with pieces missing so we really could.

IMG_2733.jpeg

Kidding, we finished the swing. Adios holidays 2023.

Nice improvements to the drain lines. Can't say that I've ever seen two traps under the same sink. Maybe one was for the dishwasher though. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the island.

We put up our tree on the 23rd, mainly due to kids wanting that last Christmas at the old house. We sold the one in Parker(mine), but still have another in Castle Pines to sell (hers).

The second was for a dishwasher.

So you’re half way there. Glad I only have one house to sell. Good luck

We’re experiencing some kinda arctic sonic mega freeze boom as a result of the nor-easter hurricane Nancy…or whatever. Something almanacy…it’s Fn cold out and our wind makes it stupid cold.

IMG_2757.jpeg

The “Combi” tankless hot water heater/boiler can’t keep up so I’m losing heat in the garage slowly. This thing is just too small…well and it’s not vented sufficiently…and it’s not getting enough gas. Unfortunate inspection miss.

image.jpg

The system doesn’t lack complexity. Here’s the “manifold” that sends the coolant to the entire house, shop, and garage. The trunk is undersized too which compounds the problem.

image.jpg

Every room has its own manifold like this one in the kitchen. Wonder how many feet of tubing run through out the house?

image.jpg

There will be 8 thermostats in the house when it’s all said and done. Didn’t realize it until I had so many but the temp sensors in thermostats are actually fairly inconsistent. These two have a 2 degree difference. I’ll be addressing that by switching to Ecobees all sharing the same sensors, one in each room.

image.jpg

Just need to survive this cold until we can get the new boiler installed and the system rebuilt end of this week is the plan.

Trying to keep making progress on the list. Laninate for the counter top arrived. Don’t have a large enough work surface yet so I took advantage of my chop saw horse, made some 5’ supports out of scrap plywood, and voila! The saw horse

IMG_2745.jpeg

Flipped over the counter and gave it a final sand to ensure that we gave consistency where I used scrap to build it up. Andrew heads back to college tomorrow but had some time to thro in so he handled it.

IMG_2750.jpeg

From there it’s just a stick-em affair and a few passes with the router.

IMG_2747.jpeg

Install is easy this time since I’d already had it all figured out. Ow we have a fully functioning kitchen (with very little storage). Limiting factor for finishing (literally paint) is warm enough weather so I can spray outside. I’ve started looking at inflatable booths for the garage but overspray is so not my thing.

Just a thought... I had the same problem you do, I don't like spraying in the garage and normally always go outside, but the weather just wasn't cooperating. So for $200 off Amazon I bought one of those party tents - (Mine is 10'x10') - and it goes up in 10 minutes flat and contains all the overspray quite well.

Yeah, stay warm. Right now, our outside weather station is reading about -6 to -10 (nights have been into negative upper teens). Hopefully by Tues/Wed, it will reverse and at least one weekend coming up is supposed to be in the 50's.

That’s a really good idea. I have windows in the garage. Suppose I could vent the tent outside too…hm

I grew up here. I’ve been known to shovel in a Tee. Just shoveled the front walk in a jacket, gloves, and no hat. Freakin ears are burning. Feels way colder than -3 with wind chill.

I've followed your other epic threads over the years, looking forward to this version!
Thank you. I’m more than just a little overwhelmed at the moment having just moved the last load in. It do have plans to bring some new ideas to the thread once I regain my balance. Thanks for following along.

Is that your daughter’s jeep? I see the hemi badge and a full float rear so i’m assuming it’s done? Any chance you can show some completed pics since i don’t think you showed the build like you did your sons in your other thread.

Yes, it’s my daughter’s Jeep. The build has started technically but kinda got put on hold because of the home purchase. Kinda ****** I guess. The start of the build starts on this post of my last thread -
Post in thread '#FabSpace'
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/fabspace.425872/post-10131143

Edit: looking at the thread, I never took poser pics post phase 1. I’ll get some today!

Next step, sometime this spring, is to build a larger oven. Something big enough to fit 4 wheels at once, a full size rear bumper, etc. once I can do that, I’ll finish her build and swap out the 25’s in favor if 37’s

Whats the rationale for having 2 thermostats in this room? How does one get them not to compete on different heat sources? I had an area in my house where the floor heat would satisfy the other thermostat for forced air and they would compete and keep the air handler from running. The only solution i could find was abandon the floor heat in that room.

In-floor heat can't do air conditioning, so if you want A/C as well, you end up with a separate forced air system. Most people who install the separate forced air system also put a furnace in it, even though it's not strictly required, because the cost is fairly minimal. It's a good backup, and it also gives you a quicker way to warm the air than the floors can. (Floors move the temperature relatively slowly).

Usually what you do is set the in-floor heat to the temperature you want, then set the forced air a couple degrees colder. If the floor heating doesn't fall behind, the forced air never comes on at all. If the floors aren't keeping up (malfunction, extreme cold, somebody left a door open too long), the forced air will kick on and warm the space up.

I've been around a few of these. The HVAC guys always use thermostats that look totally different, as was shown here. That'd drive me nuts. In a perfect world you could control a given zone from a single thermostat (and setup the forced air like a 2nd stage, or do something fancier computer-controlled, so you don't have to look at multiple thermostats. But HVAC guys tend to fall back to what they know and just install 2 separate systems "how they know" in the same house and this is what you get.

@zr52002 is spot on with how the previous owner had things setup. In the great room one thermostat controls the HVAC which is primarily for AC but serves as a backup for heat as needed. It’s clearly for AC primarily because the vents and returns are both in the ceilings and only above ground (not in the basement at all, but on the main and second floors). The lowest vent on the wall is at 10’ and most of them are at about 20’ (cold air drops). All returns are at either 20’ or 2nd floor only (to gather heat that raises).

image.jpg

Our system will be able to raise the temp in the shop and garage 20 degrees in 2 hours (probably less). For radiant heat, that’s amazing. Should be able to handle the house nicely.

In the next year I’ll be focusing on addressing the short comings of the HVAC system by adding dampers and duct fans to each room so I’m able to address heating and cooling inconsistencies due to variations in run lengths and distances. We spent the last 14 years with a **** HVAC system so making sure it’s never a problem again was all part of the master plan with this house.

Cool stuff for a gadget guy like me too. 🤪
