I love Kroil. Little more pricy, but it works well. Added bonus, it smells great.
+1 And the smell of Liquid Wrench offends me.
I use atf & acetone mixed in a spray bottle, it works alright.
The new WD40 penetrating oil is actually pretty good too is easily available over here.
Removing rusted parts with penetrating oils, even if you're not mechanically inclined, this might be worth noting.
"Machinist's Workshop" recently published information on various penetrating oils. The magazine reports they tested these products for "Break Out Torque" on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to remove the nut from a "Scientifically Rusted" bolt.
Item & Average Torque Load Required to loosen nut:
NO Oil Used 516 foot pounds
WD‐40 238 foot pounds
PB Blaster 214 foot pounds
Liquid Wrench 127 foot pounds
Kano Kroil* 106 foot pounds
ATF/ Acetone Mix** 53 foot pounds
The ATF/ Acetone Mix is a "Home Brew" mix of 50/50 Automatic Transmission Fluid (ANY Type) and Acetone.
Note this "Home Brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test.
Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that liquid wrench is almost as good as Kroil for 20% of the price. ATF/ Acetone Mix is best, but you can also use ATF and Lacquer Thinner* in a 50/50 mix.
*Best commercial general use product
**Acetone and Lacquer Thinner may damage or remove paint from painted surfaces and should not be used near painted surfaces.
Brake Fluid Cleaner is also largely Acetone and should not be used near painted surfaces.
...Kroil is the best but expensive so I try to save it for really stuck things...
Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going to get least the penetrating oil and try it out and have around the garage.
And sorry for the newb/stupid question. where can I get PB blaster. I not seen it in Wally World but also not looked other places very hard yet. Does Ace or Auto stores carry it? Mendards, Home Depot etc is about 20 miles away.
I use atf & acetone mixed in a spray bottle, it works alright.
It's funny, but I love the smell of Liquid Wrench.I think it's because it reminds me of when I was a little kid and my dad had a small can of it - one of those cans with a spout on top like you would get lighter fluid in.
