Lisle 58430 Shaft type seal puller

It says it won't scratch the crank, but I am not 100% sure how because you are still inserting a metal hook onto the inner surface of the seal and prying..
does anyone know if the hook is made of special material?

This tool work quite well. Save alot of time. I just wrap some tape on the hook that will contact the crank to prevent scratching.

you don't actually pry on the crank, you just slide it by, and then you pull on the seal, there is not any force against the shaft, I've used a bunch of times, it works great!

I've pulled hundreds of seals out with mine. Best $12 I ever spent. For those that are doing a lot of cam and crank seals, check out this set. I've used the installers more then the removal tool, but it works very well.

Here's a video I shot of the Private Brands set up pulling cam seal on a Toyota V6 engine. It worked great for pulling the seal, but there was some lip on these Toyota cams that prevente me from driving the seal in easily.

I saw this on the SO truck today. And after seeing the price online I am very skeptical. At less than $15 I doubt the "hooks" for pulling on the seals are hardened and will likely bend. But maybe not, IDK.

Like I said earlier, I've pulled literally hundreds of seals with mine. Not one problem, still on the original end. I think it even came with an extra too.

I'm just a home guy so I don't use mine much but it works great when I do use it. I don't know if the puller is hardened but it works fine and comes with an extra also.

For extra safety against marring the shaft, you can cut a little section out of a two litre plastic pop bottle. (soda bottle)

Hardening the steel wouldn't prevent bending-you have to use a stronger steel for that. the hook looks like some kind of spring steel, which should work well.

It looks like the one in the video is assembled wrong(?) Why would you want the nut that holds the hook on to be on the shaft side?

Same thing I thought. Switches around easily. It's assembled incorrectly from the factory.

I've used this tool on a number of Subaru cam and crank seals, and it has indeed worked as advertised for me. It can be a little tricky to get it into position in an engine bay, but I've eventually been successful.

I have this tool also, and I like it. I try to insert the lip of the puller between the rubber of the seal and the metal part of the seal, to stay away from any machined surfaces. Most of the time I can, but when I can't, I have never had a problem.

Use a prybar. That seal will pop right out.

I have this tool and used it on a crank and cam seal that were ROCK HARD. The seals DID come out. Like others have said.. the tool works.

Again.. I used a similar tool like this for ROCK HARD rear main seal. It worked.

Skip going out on a friday night one time and buy this tool.
YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

That rear main you unbolt all those 10mm head bolts on the retainer and it comes with a new retainer.

I tried this tool on the rear main seal of my Honda Civic and all I was able to do was bend the heck out of the tool. The tool has been very handy though on smaller seals.
