Well, after several purchases from a few pawn shops for tools I've wondered who is exactly getting the deal - me or them.

Only buying wrenches, sockets and hand tools. Average is approx $.70 to $.90 for wrenches, $.50 to $.70 for sockets. Brands have been SK, SO, Mac, Matco, and older Craftsman. Passed on the well used, only purchased items that were nearly new or slightly used.

I'm curious as to whether I'm in line with the average pricing, or foolish to have spent about $40 for a few filler items, and the rest for the tractor box.

I've walked when the pricing was higher, and went back for more when the inital offer was accepted without any more haggling.

Thought some were only fair, some steals - like a unused proto 5/8" saltus for $.75, 2 new rp craftsman flare nuts - for the same $.75 price.

Now if I could fill up the rest of a saltus set for that price, I'd feel I did well.

Question is who is the victor in the price war?

Bill

Pawn shop around here are absurdly high. Not uncommon to see things well used for more than they are new.

I often wonder how little they pay the people that bring their items in. Occasionally you will find a fair deal, but that is not the norm. It appears to be a very regional thing.

Better than my prices. My local pawn shops price used power tools and equipment at new prices and haggle from there. Truck brand and craftsman sockets sell for around $3-8 a piece, ratchets for $20-70, wrenches $3-10. I check in fairly regularly. The only deals I ever find are in the quarter bins. Sometimes good stuff slips by. I have found proto, wright, sk, mac, matco, plomb, and knipex by getting dirty and doing a little digging.

Most pawn shops around here seem obscenely high. A lot of tools cost about the same, new. However, you can sometimes negotiate the price. A couple of years ago, I bought a professional carpet extractor for 200$, down from his 300$ asking price. The machine would cost 1200$ new.

Pawn shops here are useless. They all pretty much refuse to take a loss, and thus items end up sitting in there forever. Most of them only make money off loans and cash for gold which they just smelt. Seriously if I were running a pawn shop I'd never loan for more than 40% of an item's new value, and I would probably list it at 80%, take 50-70% depending on value.

Guns tend to hold value best in pawn shops.

Three local shops here:

1: Packed full of import ****, finding quality tools is rare and even then the prices are way over Ebay/CL

2: Very few tools but what they have is always quality. Decent prices, often just under Ebay.

3: Good amount of stuff but it's always picked through. .25 per socket and .75 per wrench. I've found some good deals here when I get lucky.

OP, your local shop's prices seem pretty fair.

I tend to have pretty good luck in the pawn shops local to me. They always seem to haggle, especially if you're looking at several items. My latest find was a like new set of WrightGrip wrenches for $30! I didn't even haggle, that was the price they were marked!

Allow me to complain, um, comment rather. The pawn shops around here are generally lousy for tools other than "filler" tools. Awesome though if you happen to stumble across a cheap Bonney, Proto, or Williams mixed in the foreign junk. Most of their nice tools go straight to the internet auction site we all love for max. profit.

Nothing wrong with a good .75 cent Proto saltus though so You ****!

I suppose there are other people out there who dream of selling broken gold while buying outdated car audio equipment and overpriced guitars .

Don't get me wrong, I've had a few good pawn tool deals but too few and far between.

You are doing ok at your pawn shop for wrenches under $1.00 and sockets at .50 to .75 cents each ; if my local pawn shops charged those prices I would be in heaven. They see pure platinum in every tool and charge like there is no end in sight.

I gather from other GJ members in the past that pawn shops make all their money on their high interest rates. Lord only knows what they pay if you walk in from the street to sell your tools? I would think they must not give very much for tools they are buying.

Which brings me to the fact that some shops sit with tools for years at high prices and they could care less if it ever gets sold.

Sounds like the op found a great pawn shop.

The place I go to have 3 for $1 screwdrivers, sockets are 4 for $1 and wrenches are 3 for $1. Most prices are fair. Sets go for too much. They typically have alot of junk that just sits forever. I go in once a week and they know when I miss a week. Its been slim pickens here lately. Month or two after tax season and the good stuff will start rolling in again.

I would love to find these pawn shops that sell name brand tools for pennys on the dollar... Every shop around here offers for much lower than what they are on ebay and sometimes almost the same price vs new when it comes to tools. this local pawn shop I go to sells some used harbor freight tools for more $ than @ Harbor alone.

Local pawn shops are high in prices and crappy on value.. i tend to lean towards flea markets.. at least they know your face after a while and are open to bargaining.. especially when they see that you support them at least once a month and give them a decent sale.. hell, i get Gedore wrenches at the equivalent of $.75 and bought Gedore ratchets at about $5.. and i aint talking about that nasty indian stuff i heard about.. just last week i got a 19mm Mastercraft wrench at what would be $2..

Pawn shop.. no.. Flea markets.. yes!

My pawnshop sells tool truck sockets at $4, tool truck screwdrivers at $6 to $10 craftsman, husky, wrenches $1 to $4 normal sizes and sockets .50 to $1.00 each. But if you just make a big pile, they work with you. Most times i make a big pile then they throw out $30 and then we haggle and i remove a few "wish" items then usually its about $20 out the door.

Pawn prices around here ****. I never step foot in them anymore.

This...it doesn't help that I currently live in a military town, anyone who's served a day on a major FORSCOM installation knows the deal: pawn shops, car dealers, strip clubs, rent-to-own, and tattoo parlors all looking to get some of Joe Snuffy's money.

I was in a tight spot a couple of years ago and went to one to sell a gun I'd been clinging to for years. I had paid $800 new back around 2000 and list price was $1100 in 2013. I asked $600, was told they couldn't go higher than $400, and finally figured to hell with it. The guy had told me the pawn shop would probably ask no more than $800, but after the deal was sealed I watched another employee write up a $1500 price tag. I can just imagine that some poor Private spent a month's pay on a "cool" gun that was worth much less.

Walked into that store last year to check out tools. Everything was full retail price (read: higher than most places sell it new) but the guy there said everything's negotiable. I walked out--my time is worth more than trying to buy a beat up Sawzall for $50 off retail.

Good sockets and wrenches under $1 each they didn't hurt you at all. I just wish I could find a shop like that most around here want nearly new prices I found a set of 1/4" drive short metrics in a shop a few months ago ended up getting them off the truck cheaper

I've bough wrenches for a dime, and for up to $10 for a large one. I just left the closest pawn shop to me which I really like, with a pair of blackhawk USA groove joint pliers like "14 long, a stubby craftsman USA Phillips, and an old 3" c clamp for $10 OTD. I usually get a better deal, but the owner was there today.

PS. I've walked out o A LOT of pawn shops with nothing for two reasons: they were too high or they were assholes. Either way, I tell them exactly why I won't buy things from them and show myself out.

I find that the pawn shops I frequent have used HF/Chicom **** from %150 of what it cost at HF or Snap On for about %50(rough)-75(pristine) of what it would cost new.

I have one that does the exact same thing except with husky, they had some brand new husky $10 Christmas special kits for $20 or more each, it was a good laugh. Same tools have been sitting in there for a solid 5 months, I once picked up a proto clik stop and a near new condition sk 45710 for $5 total but besides that they want way too much.

The closest pawn shops to me are in the Port Richey, New Port Richey and Holiday area. The inventory and pricing are directly correlated to the availability and pricing of Oxy.

Beat up power tools, rusty hand tools, all way over priced. I thought going to the local pawn shops would be a good way to fill in some blanks in the tool box. Not around here, friends.

Here in the Los Angeles area, the pawn shops are jokes.

Like someone mentioned, they exist to buy scrap gold. Tools sell at 80% of the cost of new. First of all, there aren't a lot of tools in the first place. It's mostly suburbia so no serious tools anyway.

The pawn shops in my area normally get 25 cents for sockets and 50 cents for wrenches. There are a few I stop at on a regular basis that have given me a handful of loose tools for free. I find the national chains have better prices than the mom and pops.

My pawn shop is great! The guys behind the counter know me and tell me when they put the good stuff out. Just a few weeks ago I went in and they pulled a box out from under the counter and it had a bunch of nearly unused sk sockets. They priced them at .25 each :) They where 6pt standard and metric regular length and deep sockets. Needless to say I bought them all. The thing about pawn shops is their prices are all over the board so you never know if you will be finding a deal or not. It never ceases to amaze me what good stuff people get rid of. The guys that work there told me I am one of the only people who regularly check through the sockets and wrenches?? Don't know if this means that I am persistent or a sucker :)

around here $3-4 for a single wrench is typical. I was in Calif. on business a couple yrs. ago and hit up Brandi & Jarrod's thrift store and picked up some bluepoint wrenches for $1 ea, plus got a free autographed picture of Brandi so I was happy : )
