First off, I want to say a quick thanks to the GJ community for the massive wealth of information here. I've been lurking and reading for years, only to start posting recently. I've answered so many silly homeowner questions just by searching here. Thanks!!

We closed on a log home last week, now that the dust has settled, I wanted to start a thread to document progress on my favorite part of the property- THE GARAGE! It's a 24x34 "3 bay", with a full attic. 3 bay in quotes because they built the stairs on the right hand wall, eating up a bit of that bay... I guess that bay will be Vespa and lawn equipment storage, at least until I come up with a plan to move the stairs to the back wall or outside.

Most of the space is still half full of our move and things that the PO left us, until I get some of that sorted out I'll hold of on interior pics, but here's a quick shot of the shop and my new/used garden tractor (I'm pretty proud of it!).

The list of immediate needs for the garage is;
1) ROOF! The whole front pitch is leaking and the decking is shot, mostly because of the awful skylights.
2) Sort through everything and manage/plan storage & shelving
3) Compressor & lines install
4) Stain/Seal the remaining two sides (right and rear) that haven't been stained since it was built in 94.
5) Tear out the retaining wall on the left side and move it back a couple feet to hide my utility trailer and probably a plow truck over there. Obviously this requires pulling down a couple large trees, but they're dripping sap all over the cars so they're out.

Welcome. We love pictures and messes so don't be afraid to show us inside as well. What's the whole house look like. I am liking the log paneling.

It's tough to get a picture of the whole place with all the trees!

Thanks guys!

Hpozzouli- good to see another local! It'll be years before that space is "finished" but I'm looking forward to all the fun projects. Just priced out the roofing materials today, and OUCH. Even as a DIY, it's going to be a doozie. At least it'll be done right and good for another 30 years... I might still get someone to come in and quote the job. I'm interested in what kind of figures a pro would put on it.

Minor update. Been too busy trying to clean up the yard after years of neglect. Got a chance to clean out the smallest bay of the garage... Or at least move around and throw out enough of the previous owner's junk to have some more room. Still needs a bit of organizing.

Dumpster comes next week, cleaning out the other two bays of **** and tackling the garage roof. Should be a good time!

Welcome to GJ--that attic space is awesome, I know skylights can be a PITA but all that light really makes a difference! Put in a bathroom and you'll never have to leave your man cave.

Thanks guys! We're really in love with the property. It's the perfect setup! We've been a little overwhelmed with spending money on EVERYTHING (full kitchen appliances, washer/dryer, shopping for a water heater now), so playing in the garage is a nice break since it's free to clean and organize/plan. We also have some issues with bees and ants that I've passed onto a professional- no way I'm spraying nests on a ladder!

I'd love to put in a full bath in the garage- but the septic wasn't designed for the added flow. However, there is water and a sewer line in place from the house to the garage. The plan there is to worry about additional baths if we ever run into a situation where we need to alter the existing septic... Though I don't think anyone will mind if I put in a simple wash basin :)

Here's another pic of the back of the house.

I don't think I ever mentioned the builder, New England Log Homes, who designed and built the house in '87 and then the garage in 94. Their product and work is beautiful! The previous homeowner's add-ons and oddball fixes are a whole other story. He did put a lot of love into the place, so the MAJOR things are good for the most part.

beautiful place. what is the small building in the last pic? also doesn't look like you will have too much to mow, at least in front.

Thanks again guys. I sit here at work and look at the pictures and still can't believe its ours!

The small building to the right in that picture is a 12x12 shed, with log siding like the garage. Its a nice space, with a neat little loft... but sadly the structure has acted as a sacrificial termite anode and has a bit of damage to the base of it. It'll serve as a garden shed until it gets real bad, maybe I'll repair it in the future, but its not on the intimidate list!

As far as mowing, there really isn't much to mow... But I NEEDED the tractor. You know, because reasons. :)

Haven't updated lately since we're closing in on our wedding and have been spending time on that and getting little things in the house squared away.

With a TON of help from friends, the garage roof is done and water tight. Came out perfect. Renting a lift for that job turned out to be the best idea, it also gave us the chance to pull down a tree and and bunch of limbs.

There were some soft spots around the skylights... Ended up replacing 8 sheets of decking.

Used synthetic underlayment, the stuff is great.

Now the house roof looks bad next to the garage...

Needless to say, I'll be forever grateful for all the help we got with the roof!

Subscribed. :) I have somewhat of a tie to Massachusetts... my mom's from Waltham.

We just bought a log home here in British Columbia. Our place has a 20x30, 2 bay garage that's not yet sided and we're planning to use a similar log siding material to make it fit in with the house. Interested to see what you do with your garage. I plan to start a build thread after I close in about 3 weeks. :)
