Inspired by Bret’s fancy screwdriver holders, I thought I would try my hand with a set for Logan. I had some Walnut sitting around from a recent project. I didn’t make slots like Bret, but they should work.

I have been planning on making a table saw sled for awhile. I finally remembered to take some before and during photos!!!

I had a sheet of 3/4 plywood i got from Home Depot. It was damaged and I found it on their Cull Lumber rack. I cut it down to a manageable size.

attachment.php

I had some extra bamboo flooring from when we did the house and I used that for the runners.

attachment.php

I glued up the front fence and rear fence and bought some T-track from Rockler.

attachment.php

I made my first cut then attached the fence. I used my big framing square to get it close.

attachment.php

I checked it using my square after cutting a pretty long board and couldn't see any light so I figured it was good. I know I should go back and test it using the five cut method, but it really seemed good.

attachment.php

I made a stop block using some Black Walnut and I used the sled to cut those pieces. It was nice and I'm excited to do more!

Wow, Logan’s workbench is so awesome! I’m sure he’ll remember it forever. I still remember the “workbench” my dad made me as a kid (it was basically a small table that I could smash a hammer on), but Logan’s is a real proper bench!! Lucky kid!

Interesting design on the crosscut sled, looks nice. They are so useful, I’m sure you will love it. I got my smaller one to ~4/1000ths of an inch accuracy over its capacity, it’s the only thing I trust to make a square cut. It seems to get used almost every time I have the table saw out, but I should really add a stop block like you’ve done [emoji846]

Unruh: great looking bench and your son's smile tells a good story in itself. my baby so to speak just flew up this weekend for homecoming for UW and also his 10th HS reunion and he brought his girlfriend and maybe soon to be bride with him.

your sled looks like it should work nicely too!

keep up the great work in the shop and hope your son likes working on his bench right along side you. since he's only 5 are you letting him use power tools like a drill yet or just hand tools? I can still see the little scar on my left index finger where I sawed through a board with my little handsaw when I was 7 years old (OOPS?).

they grow up quick so hope you enjoy the ride with all of yours.

I’m really happy with the sled, I have made a few more cuts using a 15” X 15” piece of plywood on it and checked for square and it lined up great with my large square. I’ll have to do the 5 cut method and dial it in.

Logan really loves his workbench! The UPS guy came to deliver a package yesterday and he wanted to take him into the garage and show him :bounce:

Oh, yikes! No he doesn’t have any power tools. He has a 6” piece of 2 X12 and a small container of nails that he pounds in. He may drive nails better than me! I also made a board that has some different bolts in it that he can tighten and loosen.

Unruh: not only did it make you smile, but I bet it made the UPS guy's day.

good start on the projects you've got your son working on and unlike my dad and gramps get him some ear muffs and safety glasses and face mask and get him to use them which he will thank you for several times over when he's 50+ and he can still hear and see everything.

cheers

Great advice!! He does have some ear muffs and safety glasses, but more is always better in this case!

So I have a very good friend from high school that is a Dungeons and Dragons fan. A couple of years ago he talked me and a couple of our best friends into playing with his group online on a website called Roll20. It was a lot of fun and a great way for us to spend a couple hours together every other week. We all live in different areas of the country and rarely see each other and this has been great way to catch up. We were talking about D&D gear and he mentioned some dice towers that were built by a company called Wyrmwood.

https://wyrmwoodgaming.com/

The product is great, but kinda pricey. I decided I'd build one for him for Christmas and send it to him.

I decided to make it easy on myself and by some 1/2 pieces of Oak from Lowe’s instead of mulling down some of my stock. I cut the pieces to size.

attachment.php

It's going to be held together with magnets.

attachment.php

Here is the way the pieces fit together on the inside of the tower.

All together. I'm really happy with the way the magnets hold it.

attachment.php

I want to build a box for it and I thought I would put some dark splines in the corners of it. First I made this quick and basic spline jig that slides along my table saw fence.

attachment.php

The jig worked. This was my first time doing this and I really like the added look!

I stamped some numbers to help with putting it together and put on some Cutting Board Oil.

Here it is with the box. I also made a holder for his dice as well as some leather on the bottom of the box and dice case.

Unruh: while i've never played D&D I have spent a few years in my youth playing Yatzee, Backgammon and Craps so dice games were good times. that is some THING you made. I particularly like the dice holder. It looks like it would hold 5 dice? did you hand router the insides out or do tell?

keep up the great work in your always improving garage and i'm sure Logan will have a project or two to show soon too.

cheers

The dice roller turned out great but the box really makes it sing! Those splines look really nice and give it that little extra bit of flair. Having the mechanics of a joint on display is always interesting to me. Like a see-through case back on a a mechanical watch. Nice work as usual

That is too cool!

Bret

Thanks Bret, I’m gonna have to make one for me now.

The dice holder will hold 7 dice. Yeah I used a router, I wish I had a CNC machine. That would be so nice on projects like this.

That is very cool! I'm need to rig up something like that... Stinker (4yo) can be a bit of cheat when it comes to rolling dice while playing board games. On second thought, half the time she just moves her pieces wherever she wants anyway, so maybe the box wouldn't change much.

Ugh, life has been so busy lately I haven’t been very good about posting. I did do a pretty fun project lately though.

I'm wanting to buy a new table saw and kind of have my heart set on a SawStop 3hp. It needs a 220 outlet though. I called my buddy who is an electrician and he said he could put in a plug in for me buy it would cost me $500. Yikes not much of a buddy. He then said how about a trade, he is getting married in a couple of weeks and his new wife wanted a shoe rack/bench. Cool! I have been wanting to try building a bench with a waterfall edge so I jumped at the idea.

Here is the waterfall edge. It matched up perfectly for me. I also left the live edge on it!

attachment.php

It is made from Maple and the splines on this end are Wenge.

I also had been saving up my money for a new bandsaw. I was keeping my eye on marketplace, OfferUp and craigslist. Finally one popped up. I got it for $600, but it was super dirty and needed a blade. I got it home and cleaned it up good and put on a new blade. I used a green pad on the table and took care of all the rust. She cuts great!!

That live edge piece, please don't put no shoes on it, is outstanding!

Yeah, My wife really liked t. Luckily Ihave a local guy with a bandsaw mill. He gets most of his wood for free and sells very reasonable. I’ll have to make another!

That is a great find!

Thank you. I was very diligent with my search process. I’m really liking resawing some of my lumber. Instead of running it through the planer, I can cut it in half and get double the wood!

Unruh: that shoe rack is AWESOME!!

I also have a SAWSTOP on my wish list, but talk about spendy if you buy a new one and I haven't seen any used ones for sale that were much cheaper. good luck with that.

nice find on the big Jet bandsaw and good to hear you found a good source for lumber too.

Woah, awesome updates! I was just wondering about your thread the other day thinking it's been awhile.

Some big wood shop moves, that bandsaw looks killer! And of course a sawstop would be amazing.

The shoe bench is pretty spectacular. Did you have to flatten the slabs at all? Great stuff!

I know those saws are expensive, but I’ve done a lot of research and besides being maybe the safest saw, they seem to be very well built. Should last me a long time !

The lumber guy is out at Bainbridge Island. He cuts down trees for a living and hated seeing them going for firewood.

Thanks. The bench turned out better than expected.

The wood from my supplier (sounds like a drug dealer...lol), comes pretty flat. He cuts them a bit over an inch thick so with the bandsaw I can re-save them and get two 1/2”. 1/2 inch is what I usually use so my cost on wood basically got cut in half.

Thanks Bret! I went from a 9" to this 14" and the difference is dramatic. Also 1/3 HP to 1 3/4 also makes it really nice when resawing some of the rough cut lumber I've been getting!

That's no buddy... But I guess he's why they have the saying, "with friends like that, who needs enemies?" That's literally like $50-$60 dollars in materials including the breaker in the box. $100 max if the electrical panel is on the other side of the house and you need 100 feet of wire.

And that shoe rack is worth a hell of a lot more than $500. I hope you got a complete garage rewire out of that trade. Or at least the outlet/circuit installed and $500 in cash.

Amazing work man.

I agree that isn't much of a buddy price. He is actually going to marry one of my wife's friends. I told him that we can do the trade, but the shoe rack was also their wedding present. We didn't have to buy a gift and I think we found a way to keep the good relationship.
