Thought I would do a fun project today.

First I found two gas cans at a garage sale. Never used and for $1 a piece. I then went to Goodwill and found two speakers about the same size. They were $5.99 for the set.

attachment.php

I then made a template on the gas can and cut it out.

attachment.php

I have this little saw blade that goes on my Dremel and it worked great on the plastic.

attachment.php

Here it is with the front cut out. I tried to get it as close to the same size as the grill.

attachment.php

Then I cut out the back so I could slide the speaker in.

The fit was close enough for me. I know it isn't perfect and my GJOCD (Garage Journal Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) may kick in and I'll be doing some modifications.

attachment.php

Some clean up and removed the stickers. I also added some touch up paint on the grill of the speakers.

attachment.php

Here it is on the stand!

attachment.php

I really thought about painting the grills on the speakers. They are removable, but I thought that I wouldn't get the color perfect.

So I was inspired by drivesitfar and to get a little bit more organized! I also gotta say that Pbindesign's garage also had a lot of influence on me getting going.

This is what I started with. I was actually pretty happy with it at the time.

attachment.php

So I took everything down and the ugly really started to show.

attachment.php

I painted this wall blue. I know it seems pretty overwhelming, but I had a plan.

So I took down the peg board and replaced it with Proslat's. I also painted all of the stereo and speaker stands as well. You can see my “new” gas can speakers!

attachment.php

In this one you can see the color I’m gonna paint the other walls, I painted the corner and about 4 feet away from the wall. I just did a little so I could button up the front.

A little while ago I said I was going to make some doors for this area under my bench. I saw the ones that Pbindesign did and they looked slick. Here is the before.

attachment.php

Quick test fit. They fit good!

attachment.php

Painted and installed. I had them all blue, but they seemed like they needed some kind of flair. You can see I also painted the posts.

So my grease gun is always smearing grease on random stuff. I wanted a place to store it that would help stop that, but also help keep it clean. After a quick online search, I found some pictures that seemed perfect.

I bought a two foot long 3” piece of ABS as well as two 3” caps.

attachment.php

I then cut slots down the sides so it could be recessed in.

attachment.php

I cut it down from 24" down to 14". Then I test fitted. Seemed good!

Added a spot for the hose to set into.

attachment.php

I cut one some of the extra ABS in half and used them for spacers. This would allow the top and bottom cap to be removed later.

attachment.php

All mounted on the wall. I didn't glue on the bottom so that I could remove it and clean it later if I wanted.

Unruh: you are certainly getting a lot more organized than I am. WELL DONE!!

nice thinking on the grease gun holder. I actually have a couple plastic small Craftsman hand carry tool boxes that I put my grease guns in that seems to be working for me.

keep up the great work and make sure to spend lots of time with your bride (date nights are a must with your crew) and the kids cause I missed teaching mine how to be handy and i'm doing it now as they are all adults. they couldn't help but learn a little, but my patience for teaching them was a bit short some days to say the least and I wish i'd have had a bit more time invested in them instead of just getting projects done some days.

take care

Drives, that is some good advise. I’m hoping that having the garage clean and organized will make future projects with my 3 year old and new baby easier and safer. My 13 year old daughter already sure likes the direction I’m going!

1/2 cup, I’m glad you liked the project. I’ve been lurking at your “shed down under”, but haven’t posted and see how busy you are. Thanks for taking the time to stop by!

Unruh: it's hard to get a date night with little ones and busy jobs and schedules, but we always tried to at least once a month to keep the parents smiling a bit more.

That is sound advise. We try as best as we can and having a 13 year old helps, she is a great babysitter!!

About the garage. It seems like each thing I organize is connected to something else. I start cleaning one place and find 5 more things to do.

I got this old freezer about 11 years ago for free from a neighbor that was moving, it has been through 3 moves and used as a surface for many projects. I thought I'd give it a fresh look.

First I wheeled it out and cleaned it up good. She has some dents, but I'm not too worried about that.

attachment.php

I primed it first then painted it Sunrise Red. It took three cans to get it to this point. I could have used another, but I live about 15 min. out of town and was happy enough with it.

I had stopped at Autozone earlier and picked up this "Chrome" Automotive Trim.

attachment.php

I moved the freezer back into it's spot and applied the trim. I had a Snap-on sticker laying around. I know Snap-on actually has some freezers that you can find used pretty easily, but this freezer was free and a fun project.

That is so cool of an idea.. Consider that idea stolen, as I am going to do something similar to mine now...

Thanks

Sweet! I just saw that one of the NAPA stores by me is doing their bucket sale. I have three NAPA’s close to me and all three have bucket sales at different times of the year. You might be able to save some $

Ha!! You should see my wife’s face when I say, “Hey I have an idea!”. That may be worse for than “Hold my beer and watch this!”

She laughed and took some pictures and posted them on Facebook. Her Mom showed her Dad and this weekend we are doing his...lol.

As far as outside projects go, no I have one that needs done. I wanna build a covered area off our “ugly” shed so I can park all the kids toys under in the winter. It’s amazing how much space toys take up. Examples, bikes, scooters, power wheels, wagons...so much space.

So I did some painting and building this weekend. This is what I started with. Those shelves were collecting garbage and a mess. First I went through all the stuff, some of it had been up there for 5 years. I have this habit of wanting to save things that I think I may use some day. I got rid of a lot of this. I wanted to clean it up and make it look more appealing.

Many times I take an easy project and make it into an overly difficult project. I call this building a rocket ship. Here is the first part of my rocket ship. These are the cuts I made to hold up the shelf as well as allow for some sliding doors (I cleaned up the cuts with a file and some sandpaper, but you get the idea). Again Pbindesign's garage was the inspiration for this.

So I put it up and checked to see if it would slide...it did!!!

Painted it all up and all done!!! I just need to add some holes in the sliding doors to make it easier to open and close. I also painted the wall. I'm slowly making my way down the wall, but each time I get side tracked by another project...thanks Garage Journal!

I took a couple pics of my bike! I grew up in a small town, under 500 people, and one day a guy came through driving a semi. This would have been around 1980. He parked at the High School and started selling these bikes out of the back of his trailer for $50 a piece. He demo’d them and was there for 3 days. This was close to my birthday so my Dad bought me one. It’s called a Swing Bike and I loved it. I kept in the garage and even remember waxing it. When I went away to college, my Mom gave it to the kid down the street. When I came home for Christmas break and saw it was gone, I was pretty upset. That was in 1992. Five years ago I got a friend request from the kid down the street. We started talking and I asked him about the bike. He still had it and from the pics it was still in great shape!! He was living in North Dakota and I‘m in Washington. With the help of friends and family, it made its way to me trip by trip.

It has a locking mechanism under the seat that allows it to pivot. The spring pulls it straight.

Wow! It looks amazing! I don't think you mentioned, did you restore it or did it stay that nice the whole time? The spring system baffles me, does the rear wheel turn or just the seat? Either way I have never seen anything like that.
Just for fun I ran $50 in 1980 through the inflation calculator, it came out to $162 in today's money. Not a small amount to drop on a salesman in parking lot

I remember it being a big deal that my Dad had spent that much on me. Actually it was in such good shape for one main reason, the kid was scared to ride it. He said he crashed once and that was it for him and he went back to his other bike.

So the entire rear end pivots. There are some videos on YouTube. Also here is an advertisement I found! You can see the rear end pivoting.
