Unruh: great looking truck. how does it drive? any repairs to do or did it come to you ready to drive and just put oil and normal maintenance on it now?

you'd be surprised what the paint guys can do. not sure what paint stores you have close to you, but drive your cool truck to the store and some stores actually can match a paint and also put it in spray can form if you'd like it that way. another method is to maybe call your old owner and see if he remembers the paint color or maybe remembers the color and where he bought it.

good luck!!!!!

Just made it through your thread. What a great read. As others have commented you should get Dad of the year award. I honestly don't know how I missed your thread. It has a lot of things you are doing that I enjoy. Love the progress you are making on the shop.

Also love the C10. I will be honest though. I like the factory grill better. I would try my best to just match the paint on your lower rear. I really like the look of your truck. You might even be able to do a Satin black on the rear valance.

The idea you came up for the beam is really good. I think it is very clever.

Look forward to following your builds.

It drives great. It was a California truck and is rust free. Being a California rig meant we had some work to do with the emissions. I had a pretty big pile of hoses and other parts when we changed the intake, distributor, and carb. It runs great right now and is my daily driver. The previous owner was the son of the original owner. It was his Mom’s truck. When she passed he brought it up to Washington, I think that was around 10 years ago. All I do is make sure she has fluids and she has been good to me.

I think I’ll go Satin Black with that piece. If I don’t like it I’ll get it repainted.

Thank you Bret. I was hoping you would have something to say about painting a older Chevy. I’ve read your thread and seen you truck, which I love. I kept the old grill, but the new one was actually my Father’s Day gift and feel I should leave it on for a bit before I change it back over.

Unruh: either grill looks ok from my chair, but if you got the new grill for a father's day gift from your bride or kids (via your bride) I'd lean towards the newer one and keep the old one in storage in case new one gets damaged.

after BJ mentioned that you had other truck pics on your thread I had to do a search of all the posts and the review was great seeing all the cool stuff you've done this year.

keep up the great work and hope you and the bride are getting in a date night now and then now that you have 3 little ones tugging at you probably all the time even though one of yours is not quite so little.

We are getting plenty of date nights. My Mother moved in with us just after we bought the place and my oldest daughter is 13 and a great babysitter.

Speaking of my 13 year old daughter, she had an English assignment about irony. So I had her cut out this board on the table saw (she did great) and paint this sign. She had to stand on a chair to take the picture. I think I’ll leave the sign up, it’s kinda fun.

I got some cabinets from my work. My boss was going to break them down and burn them and asked if I wanted them. I didn't even have to paint them!!!

HAHA!

By all means keep your custom grille if it was a father's day gift.

Free cabinets from work. Score!

 Your daughter is going to get good grades in English, really ironic picture.

About the upper cabinets, can we see inside? What are you going to store in there, I'm about to install my own upper cabinets soon.

You bet. Not a lot of **** stuff in here. It didn't take me long to get them filled though. I have a lot of paint and stain and the other has cleaning supplies and other mix of things.

Okay, I have a wall of shelves that is always a mess. I try to organize it and it just never looks good. I've finally decided to put some doors up on the eyesore and started this morning. The good news is that after making three sets of doors, by the end I was pretty quick. The bad news is that the first two took a lot of time. I always forget to take pictures of the build process, but here is what she looks like as the doors went up. I still have to paint them, add hardware and organize them more, but I'm pretty happy with the look. I also have to make a scrap wood storage. The one I have now is sticking out a little bit to much and won't allow for that far left hand door to open. I think I'll build a cart with different bins that is on casters and can get moved around if needed.

This type of door was pretty easy to build and cheap! I used my Kreg Jig for the corners and router for the channels.

I've been talking out making storage for my wood. Here is the mess of wood scraps. I was using the back area for some of the longer scraps and most of my smaller stuff was just thrown into a tub.
attachment.php

I wanted it to be mobile so I took the wheels off a Harbor Freight furniture dolly. I went the easy way and just cut them off and screwed them down.

attachment.php

I had a couple of reclaimed 3/4 inch plywood sheets that I got off Offer-up for $12 a piece. The problem is that they smell of barn. So they will need to be painted. The base is 2'X4' and the middle divider is...well in the middle.

Before paint. I added some dividers. The tall ones on the right are for dowels and the little bit of metal I have laying around.

attachment.php

Pulled out the paint. This is paint I found at the oops area of Home Depot.
attachment.php

While I had the paint out, I also painted the cabinets. You can also see area in the box that I built to hold my tall 8' pieces.

Got it all loaded up!! Went through all the scraps and had a small fire.

attachment.php

It's nice that I can push it around. I can easily move it out of the way when I need to get into the cabinets. I have a section of wall that still needs some organization. Once that gets done, I'll be able to move it there to a more permanent spot.

Your lumber cart came out great.

I am still deciding on what I want to do with my sheet goods. The idea I had is just not working very well. I also plan to go through a lot of my off cuts that are under the current miter station and do some culling. I have had some of it for years and never used it.

That’s what I just did. I threw out pretty much all the pine and plywood scraps I had and only kept longer pieces or things I had projects set up for.

So I’ve been incredibly busy at school and family that I haven’t been able to sneak into the garage for very long. I was able to get all the boxes made for the wands. I also had my Mom sew some bags for the wands. We racked our heads to try to come up with a name for the wandmaker. I thought about using Ollivander, the name of the wand maker for Harry Potter’s wand, or one of the other known wand makers from the Harry Potter world, but was worried about copyrighting. I settled on Ouroboros. It is the ancient symbol of a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. It’s a symbol of the eternal unity of all things.

attachment.php

My wife thinks that I should make some and try selling them at the local farmers market or on Etsy. Not sure if that will happen, but we came up with a story for the origin of Ouroboros wands. All the other wandmakers us their own surnames for their company. So the origin of Ouroboros wands is unknown. Nobody knows where they come from or when they will show up at the store for sale. Kinda a mystery.

I've been looking for an old school Craftsman drill for awhile now. Rswannabe tipped me off to one posted in my backyard on Craigslist. I tried contacting him but each time I clicked the contact button I would get an error message. I thought he had sold it and I missed out. Last night I saw that the guy reposted the drill. Guess he forgot to put any contact info before and that was the problem. It is rough! I got him to $50 down from $75. It was local and I’ve been looking for a bit. I’m pretty excited. Like I said I've said, I'm a teacher, so it looks like I have a project over Christmas break...if I can wait until then.

The error message is a common craigslist issue. If you click on too many ads, they block your IP address for several days. The goal was to help prevent robo messaging and spam.
I ran into this when looking for a place to rent. You can switch to your phone or use a different router. It's a long running complaint on their forum with Craigslist staying mum.

I’m not sure if that was the problem. I hadn’t been on Craigslist in days and if I opened a different listing I could click on the contact info and get it. He had said that he didn't supply any contact information, but I could be wrong.

Finally was able to get out to the garage today!! I didn’t work on the drill press, but I did get some Christmas presents made. My wife’s family draws names for Christmas. You get a primary and a secondary person. That way everyone gets two gifts. We drew her Brother and oldest sister. First for our secondary person, I made a wine stopper for my brother-in-law. I used purple heart. The picture doesn't really show the purple color, but it looks great.

attachment.php

Then I made a coffee mug holder for her sister and our primary gift. My wife had been spending a lot of time on Pinterest and found this project for me. Now of course she wants one. I used some Black Walnut, Maple and I think Black Limba. The frame is some ceder. I burnt the letters in with my wood burner.

attachment.php

I was also able to work on my Secret Santa gift this weekend. I hope to get in the mail by next weekend. Last year I just bought some stuff from their tips and hints, but this year I didn't get any tips or hints. So this year I'm making something. It's kinda stressful making something for someone you have never actually met.

Great job on the Xmas Presents.

Bret

Thanks. I gotta say that now that I have spent this year organizing my garage, it is so much nicer doing projects. Things go quicker and clean up is easy. I have plans now for some drawers under my workbench (thanks to Bret) and a drillpress to refurbish. I can’t wait until my Christmas break!

Unruh there is nothing like gifts like that, well done.

Thanks 1/2 cup!!

Did some cleaning my old (new to me) Craftsman drill press. I focused on the column here is some before and after. These are just sneak peeks. I plan on buffing them more. I'm just excited with how they are turning out and wanted to share.

You can see the Column in the back of this picture.
attachment.php

Here is a close up of the column.
attachment.php

And after some sanding and buffing. Like I said, I have a few more steps I wanna take this through, but I'm excited to see the difference.

Couple more before and after. I still plan on trying to clean out this Pinion's teeth, but again I'm pretty excited with what I'm finding. Not a lot of wear marks except where the set screw was on the feed stop collar.

attachment.php

Here you can see the wearing from the set screw. Once it gets all back together it won't show, but I plan on taking a file to it and cleaning it up a bit. I still plan on buffing this more but happy with the progress.

attachment.php

I won't be able to get to complete this drill for a couple of weeks, but I'm really enjoying this.:bounce::bounce:

Wow those pieces are coming out great.

Thanks! I really enjoy giving older tools new life. I’m excited to really get going on it!!

He helps a ton. He really loves his little sister. I’m pretty careful about taking him in the garage when i’m using chemicals, grinding or sanding. He’s only 3 and I wanna keep those little lungs clean. He has been spending more time in his garage now that we have rain. He really enjoys being outside!
