Looks great!

Thank you!!

So I recently worked out a trade with Bret (bj383ss) and I got this amazing marking gauge! I was thinking about buying a new one for a while, but happy I waited!!!

So I’m a teacher and we have been shut down until things turn, I was looking for a project. I have a old shotgun that my Father-in-law gave me. It’s a Stevens single shot 12 gauge. She is in pretty rough shape. It was painted...poorly. First I took it all apart and began cleaning.

I had this amazing Maple burl I was going to use for the stock! I was really excited with how the shape was coming along and the grain. Until it broke. The burl had a crack that went all the way through and just a bit of pressure caused it to snap. I sanded it up and added a bit of oil to see how the grain would have looked. UGH.

After a bunch of wire wheel one on one time and then to the buffer, I had the black paint off the barrel. The manufacturer marks can even be seen.

I had this piece of Koa that I thought I would try for the **** stock and fore stock. I am so happy how it turned out. I still have a bit of fine tuning to get the fit just perfect, but what a transformation!!!

Unruh,

Very nice on that shotgun! That koa wood is fantastic. I ordered a surplus SKS I was hoping to have to work on just before all of the corona virus problems. Unfortunately the rest of the country is buying guns and it hasn't even shipped yet.

I went and bought some shells at Sportsman Warehouse and I was told the line to get a gun was a 3-4 hour wait. Limit of 2 boxes of shells per person. We are keeping our shells in our safe, hopefully they stay there until pheasant season!

Ya :lol_hitti that's where I ordered it from. It took almost two weeks for it to ship and now I am sure the store is closed for a couple weeks. Luckily I ordered some ammo with it. The same day I ordered it they suspended online ammo sales. I got in just a couple hours before it was all gone in store. I am fine with waiting a few weeks for the new gun owners to get their stuff sorted out.

Beutiful job with the shotgun:thumbup: Haven't read your whole threat thru yet but you have some great and interestin projects there. Keep up the good work Uhrur:beer:

Thanks! It was my first time trying something like that, I made a bunch of mistakes and still have some fine fitting sanding to do. There was actually a time when I thought I wasn’t going to get it. Sure glad I persisted!

That turned out beautifully!

Have you considered rubbing down the metal with cold blue to help slow rust? Birchwood Casey makes both a cold blue and a product called "plum brown" that might be more appropriate for your shotgun. I have used the cold blue on a few projects and its more of a gray/brown color. No firsthand experience with the plum brown.

https://birchwoodcasey.com/products?category=98&page=1

Another popular option is Brownell's oxpho-blue, again, producing a more antique brown/blue instead of the jet black you'd see on a new gun. No firsthand experience with this either, but will probably pick up a bottle one of these days to see how it compares to the Birchwood.

Wow, that koa is beautiful! Great choice!

Yeah I really like it as well. A local guy has a bunch to for some reason and was super helpful. I told him I am a teacher and I make wands for my kids after reading Harry Potter, he have me a bunch for free. The kids are gonna be spoiled next year!

Unruh, thought I would check in and see your updates. Very nice job on the shoe rack, much too nice to store shoes. I want to try a live edge project too one day.
It's nice you have a source of lumber that's reasonably priced.
The koa wood stock looks great as well. You really got some bang for your buck on that!:lol_hitti

So I have been working on a puzzle box.

So here it is before any finish on it. You can see the lid and the box and how they will fit together.

attachment.php

The sides have rods in them that will slide if the box is tilted at all.

attachment.php

Here is the lid. You can see if the rods on the box slide, they will slide into the tabs on the lid.

attachment.php

So you put the lid on and tilt it in any direction. This will cause the rods to slide and "lock" the box. To open it you have to spin the box. I plan on making three small containers to put inside. But here is the box after some oil on it.

Your a good dad.

Thank you very much! That is very kind of you.

Did some yard work today. This is already the fourth time I've had to mow this year! My cherry blossom tree is really full of blossoms this year and the star magnolia tree smells amazing!

My wife wanted a small green house for starting some plants for the garden. I had recently gotten a bunch of cedar rough cuts from a friend and thought I would use those for this. I also had an old window and some other scraps. With that in mind I decided to try to do it with only the wood and supplies I had at home.

Here is the rough cut lumber and I also had a few pieces of pressure treated lumber from a deck I helped install.
attachment.php

I cut up the cedar and ran it through the planer and jointer to try to get some straight edges and stop some of the splinters.

Here is the green house part. I made a frame around the window and used pocket screws for most of it. I had a couple of hinges in a "just in case" box!

attachment.php

I used the pressure treated lumber for a outdoor garden workbench. I actually ripped it down to 5 inches so I had enough. I plan on adding a bit to the side so she can store a couple of her own tools, but I got rained out.

attachment.php

I know that it isn't pretty, but I it was totally free and put a smile on my wife's face so I'm pretty happy.

Looks damn good to me! Happy wife Happy Life.

Bret

Thanks! She already has some starts going!

Unruh: I was going to say about the same exact words as BJ just did. great plan and what a great way to start you garden and home grown food.

We have done a garden for a few years, but we don't really have the best success. We start out strong and have good intentions, we just lose focus.

My wife’s boss was gonna take some siding to the recycling. My mom lives with us and has a hard time bending over and getting the weeds in the garden. I thought I could upcycle some of the siding into raised beds!

He has a lot more than this, but after I told him my plan he decided to keep a bunch to see how they turn out. If they look good, he'll hire me to make a bunch of these at his house too.

attachment.php

I just made a basic frame to size.

attachment.php

Here it is all done. I added a rail of cedar along the top for looks.

Unruh: GREAT SAVE and yes growing your own food is so awesome.

here's a few pictures I had saved of some similar to those you built that my wife wanted me to build until i moved a shed to give her more garden space. when you run out of siding/roofing you can make some with just wood too. some GJ members even lined theirs with visquene to make wood last longer.

the raised beds i'll make won't have any bottoms cause my bride wants plants to have lots of good drainage.

take care and hope all is well with you and your family.

Yeah, we have been good. On lock down, but we have 2 acres to play on and it actually keeps a pretty busy.

So I have a hill along our driveway and I always leave that for last. Today I taught my daughter how to use the self propelled mower!

I guess having teenagers isn’t so bad!

The planters look great.

I have taught the youngest son how to mow. The problem is I am too picky about how it gets cut. I will have to let go at some point and give him the reins I guess. HAHA.

Amazing job on all the projects! I love the creativity!

Thanks! Most of my ideas are from different garages on here. Don't be afraid to take any of them!

I only allowed her to mow the hill and then she could mow the back yard. I'm pretty picky as well!
