Hey guys,
We recently bought a new house. The plan all along was to build a shop once we got settled and saved up some cash. We are probably about 12 months away from that point right now. Unfortunately due to the location of the sewer line, The proximity of our favorite shade tree, and zoning setback requirements, The most appropriate layout for the shop is looking like a 20 ft wide by 60 ft long building. I am leaning towards 12 to 16-ft ceilings so that I can put a loft in over the workshop area.
This is definitely not my most desired shape. I do primarily automotive work on both daily drivers and drag cars. I'd definitely like to have some room to do chassis work potentially in the future as well. The big mental roadblock I am running into is the ability to shuffle cars from the back to the front of the garage. Technically at 20 ft wide there would be enough with to do it, but at the same time there will always be stuff along walls like work benches and equipment and such.
My goal is to have a two-post lift centered in the "bay" in the very front of the garage. Directly behind that I'd have a four post storage lift. I haven't decided if that will be in the center of the garage or offset to one side. My thinking is that even if I'm working on something I could still get a vehicle out from The storage lift by raising whatever I'm working on on the two post lift above it and driving underneath.
this layout still provides me with a 20x20 shop space in the rear of the shop for small metal shop and other miscellaneous work area. Well it's not my dream layout, I think it could work really well for me. I also have a two car attached garage that could store drivers without issue.
Does anyone here have any experience with this somewhat uncommon layout?

Hope this gives you some idea's. Long walls are good for placing machinery/toolboxes etc. against. Harry
