Looking for a 17 mm ratcheting box end with a retaining ring.

I'm looking for a flexible box end ratcheting wrench that has a retaining ring in it for my Astro pneumatic Nano sockets. I have the double ended one from Astro that is 17 and 22 but I'd like just a single one that is shorter and lighter for working overhead. Reversible would be nice but flippable is fine too. I thought I saw somewhere that Matco has something like that but I can't find it. Thanks

Don't know if Sunex makes one, but the Astro and Sunex low profile sockets are the same.

That locking ring looks offset to one side. Is that how the Astro's are made?

I think Astro is working on a shorter handle for the nano sockets but obviously OP wants something now.

I don’t have any experience with it. Just saved in my Amazon list.

This USAG was mentioned a couple of times in the Astro thread as a shorter alternative when the 78318 came out and people were buying it.

But to answer your question, the ring inside the 78318 is “loose” (for lack of a better term). It wiggles side to side ever so slightly.

Thank you for the replies. When I opened my toolbox this morning I think the solution to my problem was right in front of me, I just never noticed it before.. if I stick one of these through the back of a ratcheting 17 mm and into the Nano socket it will retain it and the plastic won't mar up anything on the socket and being quarter turn it should be locking also.

My point is the slot the ring sits in is offset toward one side of the wrench, whereas the slot on the Astro wrench is dead center. If you inserted a nano socket in one side of that wrench, the slot on the socket wouldn't reach the ring before the shoulder of the socket contacted the wrench. If inserted from the other side, it would not fully engage the wrench.

Unfortunately, the sockets aren’t long enough to contact the magnet. I cut a groove in mine and added a retaining ring.

Did you do that on a lathe? Sounds like a tiny grooving tool.

The retainer method shown a few posts above is a really nice way to accomplish what you want and not increase the thickness substantially. If you have some spare socket reducers, and need it now, you can make your own- which is what I did. I used a hacksaw, bench grinder, and sander, and it somehow looks professional. But that was before anyone was selling them.

That's the same problem as the USAG posted above though. The retaining ring is biased toward one side of the wrench. I don't think it will engage the slot on the nano sockets. It might help retain them a little just by squeezing the socket, but not like the retaining ring on the Astro wrench.

I finally came up with something that seems to work pretty well for a 17 mm smaller ratchet to use with my Nano sockets. I either use a ratcheting box in wrench or this Matco spline wrench. Both of them I use with the retainer that Pontiac 787 sells. I've been very happy with them. It would be nice if Astro came out with a shorter ratchet like this with the retaining ring in it, but until they do this will keep me going.

The Gearwrench, SATA, Cresent, and other Apex manufactured 3/8 drive pass thru line works great with the various brands of 17mm hex shallow sockets. Serpentine and die wrenches too. Most are reversible, and flex heads are available. The USAG wrench works great on all but the largest sockets, which have shorter hex sections on the 19mm for some reason. I can’t imagine using a non-reversible ratchet in this application.

Bought the KTI-43517 finally after looking at it for a while and needing it about a month or two ago for an alternator replacement.

It holds up to 18mm vertically without any issues, the 19mm needs to be held at an angle for it to hold without any modifications.

Should still be useful without modifications. Certainly worth the money at only $17 shipped on ebay.
