The best one I have is a worn out phillips screwdriver that I ground to a point and hardened.

I like the old wooden handled Stanleys for premade awls.

What kind of awl?

A handy scratch-general-marking-use awl. Any high carbon steel, grind, file and hone to shape. Make a handle out of a nice piece of hardwood using a lathe, drill press or hand drill. Drill a hole in the finely shaped handle and epoxy it in. Much nicer than plastic even if the plastic says Snap On.

A leather sewing awl. Made the same, but the cross section is diamond shaped and is sharp on the 4 corners. Sized to the size of thread which is sized the size of the leather.

A wood marking awl. Don't go round but use a marking knife instead. Crisp sharp lines. Made the same way.

A glass cutting awl. Get a cheap carbide marker off ebay. Good for the machinist also. Well for one that doesn't still use Chemdye to layout anymore. Can be mounted in a similar handle.

Dave, on a "make one kick" tonight.

Never sharpen on a grinder, use a fine file. They last much longer that way. ;)

I have a old Klein that wont quit. Ive beat the hell out of it. Handle is in good shape. Note I said old Klein. New ones are most likely junk.
