Looking for Bench/Cabinet ideas

I have a 40x40 that I'm mostly happy with. But none of the benches or tool boxes match. I'm not making the best use of my space. I have been thinking of putting together at least two work spaces with tool boxes bottom and benches over them, and hanging cabinets above.

I don't want to spend Lista money. And I want to build a few racks for small parts bins like the HF brand. They seem to be much neater than the clear bins I have always used.

I'm willing to automotive paint everything to match. Menard has some upper metal cabinets that I have used and have been happy with.

Looking for inspiration. Anyone do something like this? I have looked a little on Pintrist, but the format just kinda *****. Seems like I'm always headed down a rathole of advertisements.

I just finally want to class the place up a little. Might even do tile floor.

Anyone? Any threads you can think of?

You might look at "Building my Big Party Garage", "The Twelve Gauge Garage", or the one that ERODS has or one from Dan in Pasadena.

The Glendora Garage. They all have colorful ideas.

Wow, thanks for thinking of my little garage but it doesn't belong in the same breath with Don's ginormous automotive and tool museum, or Jack's awesome, perfectly planned garage.

For the OP, my cabinets are the cheap-*** plain white melamine cabinets that the prior owner of my new (to me) house left. I had two more of them from my old house so I was looking for ways to make them work together. and look better (plus hide that they're cheap!) til I'm ready to spend on much better cabinets. A little research and I decided to sand them fairly rough, paint with bonding primer from Home Depot and paint gray. There paint seems to hold on very well and they definitely look better but they're NOT on par with Jack's 12 gauge bank-vault cabinets! Anyway, thanks for the thought.

I suggest you spend some time perusing the Garage Gallery because many people have done exactly what you are describing... tool boxes with a workbench over them and wall cabinets. And if you are willing to paint to have everything match, then the sky is the limit.

It only takes a minute to pop in a thread, scroll down and see what the owner has going on for their shop design. Only YOU know exactly what YOU are looking for and you will recognize it when you see it.

Have fun!

I started with shop nuts and that thread will take a while! Never seen anything like that roll out deal which is neat. I didn't figure out yet if you/he built it or bought it. I have some harbor freight small parts organizers, and love the storage racks.
I like the look and durability of the metal cabinets for a race shop. Man you guys have given me some great stuff to look at!

This is what I did in my Garage. I bought the cabinets for $75.00 and the chests for $330 at Harbor Freight. Cabinets are 8 inches deep and the chests have 9 drawers that are 18 inches deep. Cabinets and chests are 46 inches wide.

I can’t think of the name but I remember seeing a thread where the member built a wooden frame to hold/store the bottom toolboxes and then put a work bench on the top of the frame. It came out really nice and seemed to work perfect in his space.

Personally I prefer the workbench to be separate from the toolboxes. I’m used to stacked tool boxes and a workbench you can sit at with your legs under it or storage. In the future I would love to have a couple bottom boxes with a hutch and a few stacked boxes. The hutch or cabinet could hold all the tools that stay in cases. Could also go for a bottom box with a worktop with wall mounted cabinets above so that I could take tools from the cabinet and set them down on the worktop to open the case.
