Going to be building a shop in a year or so but will need to have space for living quarters of some sort.

I have been pulling my hair out as far as what frame system to go with cost vs fast building, looks, durability.

1. Pole Barn

2. Stick built

3. Stick built with steel frame

4. Steel

Next question what is cheaper and better

1. Two story with living space on top??

2. One story with larger footprint??

I would like to have the option to add on to the shop part without it looking tacky later on as well. I have a semi that needs to be worked on and do allot of snowmobile work as well so one part of it needs to be able to fit semi truck with a good ceiling hight the other part for snowmobile at ATV work can be lower and will have an epoxy floor. The semi bay does not have to be huge as this part can be added on later to fit the trailer unit.

Thanks for those that help out I will be doing all the dirt work myself and gravel prep, septic, water lines myself, plumbing and floor heat myself.

The framing part I am not sure on yet may be hired out or I can help at least. Going to try and do as much of it myself as I can.

Wow ! I just had a long conversation about this with a buddy of mine earlier today. One of our friends is thinking about putting up a Morton building on his property. Since he lives for his car hobby his plan is to have a shop and living area in one building. My friend brought up a very good point. If you have a large footprint the cost of the concrete will probably be a fortune compared to building a two story building and finishing off the upper floor as living space. I never even thought of that but it makes sense. A good size building with a gambrel roof sounds like a good idea.
