Hey guys, just ran across this site today. Looks like a lot of good info around here. I am looking to build a 30x50 garage myself and looking for ideas (I know, I know, that can be dangerous on one of these forums). I want to put in a 2 post lift as well. Anyone out there that has done this, got anything they wish they had done different?

I just finished my 30 x 50. Wish it would have been bigger. Everything else turned out okay. I used 9' of the width and full depth for office, bathroom and utility room. Painted the floor with epoxy first, ran electrical, lights and air at the same time, saved a bunch of time and money in rental fees for a scissor lift.
Shopping now for a vehicle lift.

Based on you name, tnfloorman, you should look into putting Vapor Lock 20/20 Admix in your concrete. It virtually eliminates moisture related issues in concrete.

How high did you go? Did you have the trusses made to accomodate or just build higher walls?

Its rather inexpensive to build up. Go 16' sidewalls and you can put a loft across back for storage, office, man cave. Cheapest extra sqft you can buy.

Welcome from a bit East of you over near the NC mountains. You might want to talk to the guys at National Barn Company in Portland TN. They are doing my 30x40 in fact they showed up today, dropped off their trailer & went in search of a cheap motel. Construction on the building begins tomorrow. You can follow my progress here... http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=188161 I bought an inexpensive 2 post 9000lb lift on Ebay from a company out of Texas for $1639 delivered. Going with 12' walls in my garage with scissor trusses for a little added ceiling height. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

I have a 30x56 condo shop, its wide enough to have my 4 post lift on one side and trailer down the other side. Long enough to have my 24ft trailer and f250 crew and still have 6ft to the door. I would like to add a 2 post but haven't figured where I would put it to yet get to the 4 post.

The lift is a Triumph 9000lb version. Found it on Ebay for $1639 delivered. Got it from a place out of Texas called National Auto Tools. You can buy it from their website for the same price but I went through Ebay in case there was a problem due to the Ebay "buyer protection" thing. I know it's Chinese, I know it was cheap, but I installed 2 of them in a salvage yard I managed up north a few years ago and never had a bit of trouble with them in the 5 years I was there and we used them every day.

Honestly, I built a 40x100 with a full 16x100 attic, and it's JUST the right size. It's been 7 months and there's still lots of room!

So, build it as BIG as you can, and bigger than you think you can, and enjoy the space.

However, I had a local contractor build mine for me, so the money flowed, and the building took shape, and I am happy.

If I was building it myself I don't know if I would have chosen such a large size.
