I have a Hein Werner WS 1.5 ton model and this jack lowers so fast that it's scary.... Anyone know if the descent rate can be adjusted?

Nope.. Not without some serious re-engineering, Are the Gears bend/binding and not preventing you from smoothly rotating the handle? Any binding will make it herky/jerky and harder to control.

Nope. No binding that I can feel. Any areas to spray down to see if I can 'smooth out' the handle? BTW, it's a 'T' handle with release dial in the middle.

I noticed that on the newer 3T HW I gave to my dad. My 2T is better. The best advice I can think of, though in my case it only helped a little, was to make sure not to tighten it too much. That way it doesn't take as much force to open the valve and overshoot how far open you want it.

I have my father's WS 1.5 ton that was purchased probably sometime in the early 80's and it will lower very slowly if I just crack the valve. I'm not sure what would be different with yours.

Some HW jacks (and apparently some others, as mine is a rebadged Lincoln design) are hard to just crack the valve on.

Thanks for this. Taking this advise resolved my rapid descent issue.

After I sprayed the area down with some lubricant, I closed the valve lightly, which made cracking the valve open easier = slow descent.

I guess I was just used to cranking down on the valve tightly.
