I have to say something about all this bogarting going on. I am sort of disappointed in some of you for scarfing up every last USA made file in your local stores. Just because they are on sale and made in the USA, really?

When this thread first popped, I went down to the local Lowes and picked through, bought a couple, left plenty for the next guy to get some.

I know, some are going to say free market, early birds gets the worm, etc. Bogarting everything on the rack just seems wrong to me.

What are you on about? I've been to 4 Lowes in the past 2 weeks and 3 of them all had plenty of USA files left.

Get over yourself.

This "USA" files in most stores have been back of the peg collecting dust when they were non-sale priced for quite awhile.

I checked my local Lowes and all they had left were the Mexican and Brazilian made, but I'm not complaining. I bought my current USA-made files 25 years ago. If anyone wants to complain about something it should be to Nicholson for moving the manufacturing operations outside the USA.

I picked up the two different styles I needed. One was USA, one was Brazil. Both handles were China. I needed them so why not?!?!

I got in on the last amazon file deal, but I managed to find two 8 inch files and a six that weren't in those sets. Also picked up six handles. Out the door for 25.

My local Lowes had exactly one USA made file. Bought it and a couple of Chicom handles - I mean, how bad can they screw up a file handle....

While I was out and about this weekend I happened to pass by 3 different Lowes and stopped quickly at each one to see what they had in stock. Of course I ended up buying 8 different files, 3 were made in the US and the rest were made in Mexico and Brazil. If anybody else is looking for files here's a quick status for the stores I checked.

Dublin, CA: Lots of files in stock in various styles, none US made. They were out of plastic handles but have a ton of the wood ones left.

Fairfield, CA: Decent selection, one or two US made still on the rack.

Concord, CA: Again a decent selection, and 4 or 5 US made still on the rack. Out of plastic handles, wood ones still in stock.

The rubber handles are actually quite good. Anything made of rubber is going to be China these days.

It looks like they are marking them down even further. After picking up a set of USA files on Saturday, I went back today to pick up some more. It turns out that the wooden & plastic handles along with the 6" ******* were half off the marked clearance prices. No such luck with the larger files however.

EDIT: I take that back. After looking at the receipt, the 10" flat ******* was half off the marked price as well. Some of the others may be the same way, but I didn't need every size.

You wanna know why I bought a lot of them?

Because I didn't own any files. I hate paying full price for tools (anything really...like most people), and files are seldom used in my garage. I borrowed my dads files when I needed to. His are about 30+ years old, no handles, and he's only got a few...always the wrong one for the job.

So now that these are on clearance, I have a chance to build my collection. Being USA made is an added bonus.

So sorry for "scarfing up every last USA made file in my local store". I left plenty of Brazil and Mexico files for the other 97% of customers who don't care about COO, and only grab the first thing they see.

I believe the OP was referring to folks just grabbing the files weather needed or not and hoarding them just because the were made in the USA. In actuality he's leaving more stock for someone else to purchase. On the other hand, if someone wishes to buy every file and never intends to use it, that's fine too.

Agree or not he expressed what he thought was going on, no need to flame him for it.

My closest Lowes had no files left. Today I visited the next cloest location and purchased seven differant Nicholson files, all marked down and four were USA versions. Bought two the wood handles for .74 cents each. Hit the Jackpot I guess.

Same here.
I got 12" files today for $2.49 each
Wood handles were 70 something cents each and the ergo handles were 99 cents each.

Just made the trip to Mishawaka (IN) Lowes. Still had a fair number of USA made in 10" Flat and Mill priced at $3.79 each, and 8" Flat and Mill priced at $1.62 each. Picked up a couple of each for my two sons. Also got them a couple of 8" Half Round (Brazil) and 6" Flat (Mexico) at $2.49 each and $1.24 each, respectively. Would prefer USA made for all but couldn't pass up the clearance price on the smaller ones. Thanks to OP.

I have enough files, so I grabbed the last of the handles on the rack. $0.99 for both the wood and rubbers...

Two close by had only one USA left. So had to get it even though I have a lot if USA files from a liquidator score. Don't have many handles though. So the wood ends were .74 and the ergo were 1.98. I think I got the 5pc ergo set when they were brought up on here so should be good hopefully.

I went by my local lowes and all the pegs were empty, and as I was leaving an employee asked me if I had found what I was looking for and I told him no I hadn't as they appeared to have all been sold out. He then went and got his scissor lift and wrote down the item number and looked through the boxes above the files, I got the last ten handles and a few files to add, along with a nice roofing hammer that was marked down to $7 from 30. I also picked up two chisels with a rasp built in them

My local store had some on sale but the handi-files were still shown as stocking and so not on sale and the 3 pc sets of the rasp/chisels was not on sale either. Been that way for a couple weeks now.

Was it this hammer? I saw that marked down in the store the other day, don't remember what the price was. I would have considered getting it and might, but I want one of these if I get a new hammer. Still might settle, it felt like a nice hammer. But they had plenty in stock anyway so I was in no rush.

I think that the Vaughn hammer that you wanted is on sale at Menards this week. Shown as $14.99 -- 50% off.

I started a new thread in case others are interested.
