This is probably better suited for the general tool discussion section but I frequent sale posts so I think I have your answer. Craftsman has had their large mechanic sets on sale for heavy discount the past few months, they'd be cheaper and come with a lifetime warranty...but the general consensus is that Gearwrench is a much better product than current production Craftsman. Stanley sets have also been on sale but again, Gearwrench is a better product. The good Kobalt sets haven't gone on sale. I did see a set of Channellock sockets on sale, I've heard good things about them but I have no experience with them...and honestly, I think you'd be better off suited with Gearwrench, that seems like a damn good deal. What ratchet does that come with?

Thanks I saw this yesterday as well when it was 179.99. I kept looking because it is made in china, plus had a bunch of things I don't want in a socket set, like 12 points. And I have a small craftsman set now, not really impressed in any way, and ratchets are all ****.

If you use metric sizes a lot, I highly recommend getting this 19-piece 3/8" drive set from Lowes. Most Kobalt tool sets have 12-point sockets for the 3/8" size, but this set is all 6-point and comes with a nice 72-tooth ratchet that has a very smooth action.

I actually picked one up recently ($16!) to round out my socket collection since many of my 3/8" drive sockets were 12-point. Everything is made in Taiwan and the sockets have good finishing quality.

Just FYI, that Belkin 5-port switch is not really a good deal at $12.99.

That particular model is a 10/100 switch, which is much slower than current gigabit switches. $12.99 also seems to be the normal price on Belkin's web site so there's no need to make a mad dash to your local Lowe's to try and find one

If you use metric sizes a lot, I highly recommend getting this 19-piece 3/8" drive set from Lowes. Most Kobalt tool sets have 12-point sockets for the 3/8" size, but this set is all 6-point and comes with a nice 72-tooth ratchet that has a very smooth action.

If you're trying to put together the best set for your money, it's usually better to piece together your own kit from several smaller sets. The larger sets often have a lot of filler pieces like screwdriver bits and hex wrenches.

Kobalt did have a 200 piece set on clearance for $60 just a few days ago, but I think it's back up to $169 now. The issue with that 200 piece kit (and many other moderately priced socket sets) is that the 3/8" drive sockets tend to be 12-point.

I don't think you'll find better outside of something used. Gearwrench is very highly thought of on this forum, plenty of professional mechanics use them. The Kobalt sockets aren't very nice but their ratchets are not bad...well except the 1/4", in which case I only like the flex head, the others feel cheap. I don't imagine you'll find many professionals using Kobalt sockets, they're hard to read and I don't imagine they will be readable after a few uses. Also the Kobalt 1/4" extension is junk, it is made to fit square(ratchet) as well as 1/4" hex, this means the ball sits on a corner and doesn't lock it on.

I haven't been looking for sets but I have been looking at ratchets for a while. I really think you should look for Gearwrench or Williams(These could be used professionally). Avoid Craftsman, Kobalt, Stanley, Dewalt, Husky and the like otherwise you might as well go to Harbor Freight(These are more homeowner, light duty sets. Though some pros do use them). There is a lower level than those such as Bluehawk and whatever Big Lots and flea markets sell.

My Kobalt sockets look identical to my Gearwrench ones. The design is almost exactly the same except the Kobalt sockets are laser etched while the Gearwrench ones are engraved. They even weigh the same.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were made by the same manufacturer. Both are made in Taiwan.

I don't know, it could be but also look at the Stanley sockets, they look identical to Kobalt. I've never broken a socket myself so I may be totally wrong assuming they're as weak as they feel. But I'm wondering if Kobalt has different levels of quality in sockets, I have two 1/4" sets of current production Kobalt I'll take a look at. My third set is Kobalt Williams which is a whole different level of quality, too bad they don't make those anymore.

That looks good to me. Make sure you for check coupon codes, I use a ad-on called "Honey" which will search and try coupon codes for you. There is a thread in this section about cheap Gearwrench tools at Advanced Auto Parts, you may want to check your local store first...not sure the online price matches. CPO is also on eBay, check their prices there first because it could be cheaper. I saved $30 on one of their eBay listings on a Milwaukee drill, obviously this is very hit or miss.

I researched these for a while and ended up buying the Kreg R3. It's more of a 'mobile' solution since it's just the drill guide (no clamp, etc.).
I felt I could clamp the damned thing myself and save $60 in the process. So far, so good... I do a lot of work with large panels, so this more mobile jig works better. If you're planning on doing work with a lot of 1-by material, the K4 may make quicker work of it (with the built in clamp).

If I do ever go with something with a built in clamp, I'll probably skip the kreg and get the Porter-Cable 560. It's built a bit more solidly and seems better received outside the Kreg fanboys.

It's because it is "sold out" according to the website, but their actual store inventory is 1. This happens often when they have a display model left. When stuff sells out on the website, it goes back up to full price
