I purchased both (sae/metric) 8pc 1/2" drive deep socket sets for $18.98 each and a stubby ($10) and normal ratcheting screwdriver kit (gearwrench clone)for $15.

They had the new socket sets and wrench sets out so I went ahead and picked up the metric wrench set just to check out. IMHO They are **** for $40! If they where $20 or even $25 I would keep them, but they are **** for $40.

The funny part, I went to lowes.com and tried to post a review on them. In the review I said I liked the overall design better then old ones, That they are made in Taiwan yet still have a USA price tag and I rated them 2-stars overall... 2 hours later, I get an email saying my review had been rejected..... Guess they don't want people to know they are made in taiwan....

Picked up a nice load of metric ratchet wrenches at the Lowes across the street. Not much left but I got a couple of sets worth. Knipex pliers were regular priced at $29 but I've had my eye on them long enough and just pulled the trigger. Came out to $26 with the 10% coupon.

Hit a Lowes on my travels today. Really sad to see the USA stuff on clearance, to be replaced with China stuff. Tried to use a ten percent off coupon, one that I just picked up at the PO yesterday. They rejected it due to a Feb 2011 expiration date.

Picked up a nice 1/2 inch ratchet set, like I need another one!! But at $19, I couldn't pass it up. It was the last 1/2 inch set they had. They still had several 3/8 and 1/4 inch sets left.

Almost picked up a combination wrench set, ten pieces for $19. Tempting for USA tools.

What are the idiots at Lowes thinking, dumping nice USA tools for China stuff? I guess they are assuming their customers don't care or won't notice, and they might be right... Sad.

I had the same problem with my being expired in June 2010. The cashier (who also worked the customer service desk) said not to worry about it and that she'd still honor it.

This is what I bought, plus a 6" extension (forgot to put it in the pic).

attachment.php

Metric and SAE long ball hexs for $13.**
Metric and SAE short hexs for $11.** and 13.** respectively
Security Torx I believe was $11.**
Bottle opener for $4
6" extension for $5

The only thing they were out of was the regular torx and which stinks because that and an etorx set is the only socket type stuff I needed to replace all my Chinese with American. Ah well. These tools are Craftsman with a Kobalt name on them for 1/3 the price, not bad as long as they don't break!

Was in the Fredericksburg, Va. Lowes (The big one on rt. 3) a week ago, they had all of the Kobalt pass-thru 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 inch, all meaning single individual sockets SAE and Metric, allen, torx, Etc., wrenchs, Plus mechanic tool sets, and 3/4 inch wrenchs and sockets, and sets, all marked Kobalt on closeout. No other Lowes that I have ever been in in the State of Virginia, has had close to what this store had and it's on closeout.

I'm tempted for those longs hex. Haven't had a need for one yet, really need a long torx, but for the price worth having around.

Who actually makes the Kobalt badged Mad in USA sockets?

And BTW, a lot of the new Kobalt line is not made in China, it is made in Taiwan. :scared:

Knipex was knocked down at my local store. 10" Cobra for $22. I also grabbed 1/2 drive 5 pcs extension set for $11 and a Kobalt 3 pcs Tie pneumatic tie rod end remover for $16, marked down from $49.99. It was made by Danaher!

I didn't need them until recently, when taking the intake manifold off of my wife's VW VR6 and again when taking some sort of air valve off of the same VW. I didn't have them, and they could've really come in handy. I was able to make do but when I saw them I grabbed 'em.

I also would like to get a long torx set, but I don't think Lowes had those in stock. Just the regular ones (which I missed out on, dangit).

Hit two of the closest Lowes a few times. Knipex was only marked down at one store about 10%. I did score a couple of things for pennies. :D

Thanks for the heads up on the mark down.

Damn, I need one of the rev. metric sets. I found one SAE set but was missing the 9/16 that is out for demo. So they took some off. Figure if i can't find one judging by ebay can part it out easily.

I looked at the 3pc slip joint pliers, those are china/taiwan right?

I also got the 1/2 universal for $5, best I had seen was 8.

I also got many of the items in your picture.

The 110 piece set (for $75) is of great value because it also contains three sets of hex and torx bits that you can buy separately. These three sets alone are worth more than $35 per the clearance price.

Then the 1/2" size has some large sockets that are not normally in sets.

Did anyone happen to grab an extra Kobalt metric long ball end hex set? I found an SAE set and would like to get the metrics. None of the stores in my area have any left.

Thanks,
Don

I am chewing on the $27 slide hammer & puller set. The puller isn't worth much to me but I don't have a slide hammer and it's almost worth $27 to be able to not have to go to Auto Zone twice when I need one.

For some reason, the insulated Knipex lineman's went from 39 to 29, the 2 cobra wrench deal went back to full price (wtf?) and a few others were knocked down, mostly the insulated stuff.

I don't get it, but I did get a 3/4 gearwrench for 4$. Awesome to have when I'm running a mill.

There are about 6 Lowe's in a 15 mile radius around my house. I drove around specifically looking for Gearwrench standard ratcheting wrenches. The Gearwrench selection at all the locations is slim to none, but I ended up with a 7/8 and 15/16 for $18. I also got two 3/8" drive hex socket sets (7 piece SAE & 6 piece MM) for $23, both made in the USA. Discount for all of the items I bought was 50% off.

I just picked up a Kobalt (Danaher/Gearwrench) 1/4" drive swivel head ratchet for $3.56. Last swivel head at two stores. The small one in this picture from earlier in the thread:

I didn't need it, but at that price, my son is getting a gift for his bike toolbox.

Various Knipex pliers are marked down a few bucks (all of the insulated handles) at two stores. Two of the comfort grip handle pliers, too. One Cobra plier.

Bosch 12V Max lithium ion impact and powerbit drivers are marked down, too. One store had the two in a set for $99.

All those new Kobalt wrenches sure look like shiny junk...

Well, I did have to tell the guy at the check-out counter about the yellow tag on the rack, which hadn't been entered into the barcode scanner!
