if it doesnt work go to another store and return without receipt for store credit. end result is the same, just some more leg work, but you get what you want.

Done something like that at Sears years ago moving up from the lowly RP to a better ratchet. Since they had to scan the value of the RP I asked to upgrade to a better ratchet and pay the minor difference. At Lowes it probably depends upon the clerk or the mood of the M.O.D.

I did something similar just the other day. I warrantied a Kobalt 3/8 led ratchet which is now discontinued. I bought it at clearance pricing for around $7. The nice lady at customer service said to go find the tool department associate and he would find me a similar style ratchet and I would be all set. The tool guy basically told me he couldn't give me anything over $7 in exchange for my broken ratchet because that's what I paid originally. Basically after not taking that offer the manager said I could get a normal 3/8 Kobalt ratchet (approx $25) in exchange for mine. If I wanted to upgrade I would have to pay the difference. Ended up buying the flex head 3/8 ratchet and paying the $5 difference. Just ask for the manager if you don't get the answer you want from a regular associate. I did have to show them my drivers license for the exchange process even though I had my original receipt. Good luck!

I bought two of those led ratchets. . $7 a piece.. why not. Haven't broken mine though.
I would think it would be no big deal.. but I would say it depends on the store.

I've done that at Autozone.
I warrantied one of the crappy chinese ratchets out of the kits, for the Taiwan kind from open stock, and payed $5 to get a flex head version.
