Do you seriously know of any circular saw today that comes without a carbide blade? I'm not sure where I'd even look to buy a non-carbide circular saw blade if I wanted one? :twak:

How is the M12 Surge Impact driver? I've been eyeing one for the reduced noise, not really max torque. Is it significantly quieter, or is it marketing fluff?

It's my most used tool, had it a couple years, still works flawlessly,....... However, I really don't know if it's any better or the noise is much different than the regular fuel impact driver. If I owned an M12 impact driver I wouldn't get the Surge just for noise reduction, way too many better ways to spend money, like the cabinet(?) drill/driver.

The noise is definitely better than the non surge, but I'm still on the fence about mine. I don't feel like it has as much control as the standard impacts have. Time will tell if I come to like it better than my regular impact.

I have mixed feelings about the knob thing. The way you described it, maybe it's different than I'm thinking. My old old craftsman jigsaw, a rebadged DeWalt, had a knob that limited the max speed. It still had a variable trigger. When cutting metal, it was nice to be able to set the max speed and then just pull the trigger to the stop. With my new 20v DeWalt jigsaw, I find it harder to maintain the slower speed. I don't have the m12 oscillating tool, so maybe its function is different.
I know what you're describing, I too have a jigsaw with that feature, and its handy.

Unfortunately, this is different. The power switch is strictly on and off, with a separate speed adjustment dial. There's no way to feather the speed while making a cut. I've also got the M18, and the 18v Makita versions, and they also suffer from the same weird switch setup...

I guess this is justification for embracing multible cordless platforms...

It's probably just based on what I'm use to, but with the Surges, I found that you don't get the same audio cue as the fastener tightens, and the impact slightly loads. Loose - Tight - and half way through the board has a very similar feedback loop.

On the plus side, the lower level noise is nice. Both personally, and if your working in the same space as customers, it's less jarring to them.

I hate the stupid squeeze things that never work. The M12 caulk gun has changed my life.
I have been looking at these. How bad is it starting the bead after it's retracted? Is it easy to judge when the bead will start or is it a big delay? I read a bunch of reviews and a couple of them had big problems with it. Could be user error, but wanted to see what you thought.

I just put in a bunch of windows at my buddies cabin and my hand hates squeezing the caulking gun that much anymore. I'm finished with the outside, but I'm going to have a ton of trim to caulk inside.

M12 sprayer. The m18 has a history of tanks leaking. I bought the m12 and although not a back pack, its worked great. I bought it on a HD special with 2- 2 gallon tanks.
Picked one up a month or two ago for spraying roundup.

I have no experience with the M12 Surge but I do have the M18. It's quite a bit quieter and I really like it for wood. I used mine to replace about 600sq ft of decking and build about 40' of handrail and it was actually pleasant to not have to listen to the rat a tat. I don't like it for running screws into metal, neither piercing nor self tappers. The control factor is weird and I was breaking quite a few screws off. The same with Tap-Cons. A couple of weeks ago I replaced my M12 Fuel impact again and decided against the Surge because it's my most used at work and I run as many screws into metal and cocrete I do wood.. I also have the standard M18 Fuel on the service truck. The Surge stays at home in the wood shop which is it's natural environment.

Just nabbed a nice discount deal at Northern Tool on an M12 LED light, the 2351-20 sticklight.

Very nice. I like how it's just plain on or off, and the LED color is a nice even standard incandescant yellow so that you can perceive colors correctly. Extremely well thought-out -- it's often really hard to tell wire colors apart with most LEDs.

About 15 years ago, my son bought a DeWalt "kit" (NiCAD/NiMH) that included a small "panel" saw. The blade was just large enough that it would cut a 2by. The saw blade was NOT carbide tipped. Switching to carbide tipped blade made a huge difference !

(Segue - He was doing some serious remodeling, so there was a lot of demolition. The city would take anything that fit in a 32 gallon barrel that didn't stick out too far. I cut down many 2x4 and 2x6, plus lots of plywood to fit in those barrel ! I was always amazed how many cuts I could get out of that little saw !!)

My most used M12 items:

- Axis heated vest (wear it every day at work)
- Rover light (my work light & phone charger away from home)
- Inflator (always in my vehicle)
- Rocket light (great for basements, boiler rooms, grilling, etc)
- 1/4" Impact driver (rarely ever go get the M18)
