Back in the old days before parts were cheaper to repair than replace you could test armatures by rotating them on the metal "v" of the machine, And the machine would growl when a bad armature was found i believe.
Just a little before my time.

you would have used a piece of metal on the aramature as well. the unit came with the piece but it got lost and everyone used an old hacksaw blade...........and it isn't before my time:spit:

andy, my purpose for the growler will be for rebuiling generators and starters on older harley-davidsons. if the armatures are good they can be rebuilt for $50 in parts. replacements are imported and can run $200, besides they are supposed to have genuine delco-remy units not ching-shang's.
