funny story. i always go on the mac truck and lowball the eff out of him all the time just for fun. like point to a socket set and ask, "how much? $50?" well last week i finally asked him about this set http://www.mactools.com/shoponline/product/tabid/120/p-325637-4-pc-capped-pry-bar-set-red.aspx that was laying on his floor for about a month, never moved. so i lowballed him at $100. he said, well those normally retail at $169, but i could do $99. i was kind of taken aback and didnt want to drop the money on the spot. so i literally hid them in his truck so nobody else would see them. he said he would hold them for me till this upcoming tuesday. i wanna buy them, but i would really like to know COO if possible. america would be pretty cool, but either way i feel its a decent deal.

i figured they were a decent deal. i would also like to add i am not a mechanic. just a diyer. but not your average diyer. i do everything on my car and others vehicles, including building my own engine. in fact, these prybars wouldve come in so handy last monday. i needed to loosen my subframe and pry it down to take a inconvienently placed bolt out. all i had was a really long screwdriver. not good. since mac guy stops at the shop down the road on tuesdays, you can put the timeline together. monday, needed prybar. tuesday, prybar set offered at good price. wednesday, regretting not getting prybar set on tuesday.

MAC stuff is all re-badged anyway, so I'd honestly recommend picking up the USA made prybar set from Craftsman. If you're using them as a DIYer there's no reason to spend $100 vs $40. I use mine professionally working on large equipment, and have no complaints.

its difficult to explain my situation, but these bars would most likely get used in heavy duty situations. something like my snow plow and truck. my landlord owns a diesel shop down the road from me, so im often in situations where his equipment (he has like 20 lull's if you know what those are) ends up at my place. im sure the craftsmen would be great, but i also like supporting the mac guy. its because of him i love mac tools. too bad most of his stuff is junkyish. on a side note, i just bought a set of nice mac wrenches on ebay. at least they are stamped usa.

You can save yourself some money by buying Wilde pry bars from Harry Epstein.

I have the 12" version, CPB12R, of that series and Taiwan is stamped in the handle. Though COO is disappointing the tool is not. As others mentioned this thing can take a beating without any worries.

If I remember I'll ask a friend about them. IIRC he told me a story about some MAC prybars and they were made somewhere in Ohio.

wilde doesnt make a striking prybar.

the only 2 (striking) i am aware of, that are fully usa, are craftsman professional and snap on.

most of the rest are "assembled of global components", as if mac/matco/mayhew couldnt find a us mfg of plastic handles.

the blades are stamped before final assembly, and are not an automatic qualifier for "made in the usa" title.

They have the same stamps as the craftsman pro's FWIW. They look identical side by side except for the handle.

well i picked them up. just like my friends' sets, these are stamped "usa" near the tips. there is also a sticker on the box that says "made in usa with gobal materials" good enough for me. he also had a used snap on ratcheting screwdriver. i asked what he wanted since i remeber hearing on here that its a tool everyone should have. he said $10. i didnt argue with him. so i got the pry bars and the screwdriver for just under $118 out the door.

Sooo.. the prybar, and the handle were both made in China, shipped over here, and "made" in America by them gluing the handle to the shank. That's what that means

No the "bars" are made in the USA and the handles are made somewhere else. Then put together here as well. I believe they are made by mayhew. Same as the craftsman pros.

The Craftsman Pro aren't fully USA made. The Handles are imported, I believe.

Yes, i believe you might be right. I think the handles were imported from USA.

basically save half off by choosing american handle. with the exception of the short one in that mac kit, which is preferable over the slightly longer 10"? with the pros.

Mayhew Dominator has striking pay bar line from 7" to 58" long, including a "monster" bar from 1" square stock.

Sooo... he said the bar was stamped "USA". That could also mean that the handle came from Taiwan, the bar was forged in US and assembled in US. By Mayhew, I'd bet.

Some of those handles are too toxic to make in the USA.

Matco has their ratchet handles made in Taiwan where there's no EPA.

I have the neon green version of those bars and I love them. I also have two weird shaped ones that I bought because the handles matched. I think that I bought them on the GJ for next to nothing. I paid 50 bucks on CL for the set used with the tray.
