Thinking about selling my old toolbox. Just taking up room. Just curious to know what it might be worth.

I'm thinking the ~$250-$400 range. Depending on in person condition and local market. That looks to be well used. There is something up with the upper bank of drawers on the top box. The hangers are sagging typically from being loaded to heavily.

Around here, that might be worth $350-$500. It would take a while to sell.

Around me boxes are hard to sell in general, old boxes do not sell well at all. In my area that is a $300-$400 dollar box. There are people who like them, but they are few and far between. If you lucky and cross paths with one, you can easily get $600. More likely it will sit for months.

If your serious, get rid of the stickers, give it a good degreasing, and a good waking. It is generally worth the time to go after it with some rubbing compound and some wax to make it as appealing as possible to the largest number of buyer.

My old man would have had a heart attack if he saw you had that for sale. He'd buy it in a second. That one looks just like the one he still has!

Looks like a twin to a box my brother has. It must be what, thirty years old?

Personally I find those short, narrow drawers useless. Unless I was going to put it by my lathe just to hold tooling and stuff.

$200 maybe. I'm not a collector or old box aficionado. Looking at it just to use.

Just paid $300 for a Matco Cube Box in great shape so I think you could get $350- $500 for the Mac.

If the draws are sagging I wouldn't want it, if everything is in good working condition I'd probably go 300 with the idea that I would need to put a lot of work into it. Restored, that would be nice.

Cant say about value but thought I would chime in anyway. I just inherited the same set from my brother, used very hard, but still great boxes in my opinion. The bottom is a Mac (made by Matco) 1977, and the top a Matco 1978. Put different wheels on lower to fit under a workbench, and put top on part of my other lower. They needed some major cleaning and lock work, their ugly but work great. I dig the vintage stuff, I say keep em.

Those are some of my all-time favorite boxes. I'd pay $500 for that trio all day long.

Wow! Most of the posts we get here are guys saying they've been looking for months/years and all the old boxes are snapped up before they have a chance to look at them.

Personally I find those short, narrow drawers useless.

Again, personal preference. I've got several of that size and find them beneficial for sorting so stuff is easy to find. I've got one huge/wide/long/deep box and find it's easy to overload the drawers to the point that even the good ball bearing slides are work to open and close often. Just so much weight, overcoming the inertia is heavy going.

Drawers require at least the same clear space in front of the box as they are deep. The other plus is the shorter depth drawers don't require as much space in front of the box to open. I've got a friend who got rid of what he thought was his dream box because he hadn't thought of how it was going to share space with a car. Was barely room to squeeze out of the car and the drawers couldn't be opened full depth. The replacement shorter depth box fit fine and could be accessed with a car in the parking space.

That is a solid $350-$400 set here, and an easy sell. Wish i had that side cab, it would match my set.

I have that top and bottom, paid $400 for. Would gladly pay $600 for your set w/sidebox if it was in GA. I love these boxes with the chrome handles! You will regret selling it someday. Note I did not say probably.... You will! But if you decide to, ask $900, you can always come down.

I don't know who owns Mac now or then, but my lower Mac tools box from 1977 is stamped Matco near the bottom, from what I gather Matco was the tool box manufacturer for Mac before they broke out on their own.

Man, I keep coming back to look at this thing! The drawer configuration, it's a little bit different than mine, and love that side box! I want this thing. Do you have plans for heading east anytime soon?

There was an (identical?) Matco set on Craigs here locally for about two months back in the November-December timeframe that the PO was trying to get $300 for but couldnt. I offered $200 and kept in touch with him until he gave them away to a relative.

JMO, but those boxes are pretty nice being slightly wider than what was "normal" back in the day, but sadly theyre not worth diddly in the real world bc theyre not old enough to be considered vintage. Stick in back in the shed another few decades....

I don't know about matco, they may be owned by Stanley also, don't know. I was considering a mac route at one time, did the ride alongs and everything, at that time they were owned by Stanley. Stanley tool actually owns a lot of brands, they're pretty big.

well, I don't know why I like them so much, I just do, must be the chrome.I keep a constant watch on craigslist for them but they never seem to appear here in the south. If anyone sees a nice Mac set like this for sale for around 5 bills and within a couple hundred miles of Athens Georgia please give me a shout. I'll :3gears: there!
Edit) actually wouldn't turn down a Cornwell set of this vintage and style either!
