Mac Tools Macsimizer cart review

I've been a long-time reader of this forum, and I was surprised when I didn't see anything about the big Mac cart. There's quite a bit on here about the KRSC46. There's much less about alternatives. I had mostly settled on getting a KRSC46 based on the reviews, but I wound up going for the Mac after cross-shopping.

Hopefully this helps someone else going down a similar path.

Here's how it looks after owning it for about 6 months.

I pulled a drawer open to help with perspective. It's a big cart, and I use it as a main box.

And here's some more of the top compartment and another drawer.

Here are the specs from their catalog:

Dimensions: 41.5 W x 47 H x 25 D
Volume:24,722 cu in
Drawer Slide Capacity: 125 lb for the single slide drawers and 250 lb for the double slide, same as the Mac Tech series
Casters: 1,200 lb caster, same as the Mac Tech series (The wheels are chintzy feeling and my least favorite part of the cart.)

The Mac website is somewhat lacking so you have to call their customer service line for more info.

Weight: The total weight is somewhere between 300-400 lbs, unloaded. I believe it was 330 lbs.
Sheet Metal: The exterior sheet metal is 16 gauge and the drawers are 18 gauge.

When I called up Mac's customer service line, they quoted me $2800 and gave me the contact info. for a distributor. I got a few hundred off the price, but I think I could have done better.

Ordering from the distributor was easy enough for someone not working out of a shop. I met him along his route, and I made the order the same day. You have the option to order it with different drawer configurations and whatever hideous color combo you want. I think he was vaguely amused that I wanted a red toolbox with chrome trim.

Overall, I’d probably buy it again. I’d love to have a big shop with a double or triple-bank roll cab, but those boxes weren’t an option for me, and as renter, I have to think about moving. This cart is in sort of a sweet spot. It has a lot of storage volume, but it’s still light enough to be mobile. The drawers feel as nice as any of the larger Macsimizer boxes I tried, and I like the adjustable detents. The lock ‘n roll drawers were a big turn off for me on the Snap-on boxes I looked at.

If you're looking for the storage capacity of a small double-bank, but you don't have the space and/or you want something more mobile, I think this is a good choice.

You can use image tags if your pictures are hosted somewhere online. Quote my response to see how it's done:

You won't find much on them online because MAC never offered a true full drawer cart until the last few years.

That makes sense.

I wonder if with the trend towards wider roll cabs and hutches, carts like these are filling a gap. The main reason I got it was because I didn't see much on the high end that was tall and narrow.

Hopefully the pictures I posted are visible now.

The box came with a quality control checklist which I kind of liked.

Like every other Stanley brand, they're pushing the Made In the USA with global materials badging very hard.

I have no idea how much or little of the box is made the usa. I suppose a checklist like this answers the quality control concerns people have.

Thanks for sharing!!! and welcome to the journal.

What are the dimensions of the drawers?

I'm not sure if i like the rail system on the ends. :dunno: I browsed the MAC online catalog and there were limited offerings of tool holders, cord wraps, and possibly an additional drawer unit.

I think there was always interest for the carts. The Snap-on and Matcos always sold well. I'm not really sure why MAC always lagged behind but from what I gather all cart production has moved into the Vidmar manufacturing facility in PA so maybe its just been a matter of not having the capacity in the Ohio plant.

The rails seem interesting. What I dont really understand is why the corner guards are gone. Maybe they offer stick on bumpers but at that price range its very strange to omit them entirely. Should be fine in the OPs home but in a shop someone is going to hit it with something.

Nice looking cart.

I think a big advantage to these style carts is the built in pry bar storage. Your not going to get that with your typical chest.

The drawers are about 35.25 W x 23 D. You can get different drawer configurations when you order. I don't think there's an extra charge, but I can't confirm.

For anyone looking at my pictures, the 2" tall drawer really is 2" with little to spare. I have an Ernst wrench rail with a 24 mm and a 1" on it. Ernst advertises their rails as fitting a 27 mm with 2 inches of height, but it would be close with the drawer liner.

The rails weren't a big concern for me when I was looking. I'm probably going to pull mine off and just make my own hooks or buy the cheap magnetic holders from amazon, harbor freight, etc. Mac wants $50 for a trash can holder. It doesn't even come with the trash can.

You can latch their toolboxes to the rails which is cool though. I was thinking of buying one and using it for my electrical tools. But again, not for what they want.

Here are the casters I knocked in my original post. The manufacturer is algood.com.

I have no issues with the way they function. Granted, my roll cart sits in the corner of my garage all day. But it has plastic chrome hub caps! I thought this was a "premium" box.

I do want to point out that while I am dwelling on some negatives or potential concerns, I am very happy with the cart. The drawer slides feel great; the cart has an overall heft and solid feel to it that I did not see with some other carts; and the fit and finish is excellent.

Hub caps?? Jeebus. That seems like some box-store ****. I'm sure they're better than what Husky is putting on their boxes, but...

MAC red has always been very pretty. It has a slight hint of orange in it.

The color is sweet.

If you order custom trim colors, you can change the color of the "hub caps" too. Maybe it was there way of adding some customization cheaply.

What are the measurements of the top compartment if you exclude the screwdriver / prybar storage along the edges? I’m trying to decide between this cart and the 48x24 Tekton.

Thanks
