Which post specifically, the Labor Day Week sale animation?
Yup, I lurk(sometimes a lot) on IG and that one caught me at the right time and I got checkout done before getting distracted by something or someone else! The "call to action" in marketing speak with a deadline and offer probably helped me do it then...the offer was less important...I was going to buy it regardless so just seeing it at the right time to complete the process was what I think mattered

It's funny, last night as the sale was ending there were several sales in a row that were probably from folks who saw that animation earlier in the week and put it off just like you haha

Like it or not, people respond to deadlines! As a result....I hate end of fiscal quarter and despise end of fiscal year at work as salespeople are rushing to get orders booked and call with lots of "urgent" questions to hit made up deadlines lol...but that's way off topic

Here's a Blender rendering I put together of the large display. It was not completed in time for Fabtech though unfortunately.
Post 002.png

On the bright side, two tabletop displays were made in time for the show! One is in the Fronius booth and the other is in the OTC Daihen booth. Joel's employee Blaine (@bmaywelds on Instagram) welded them up and did a great job.

Kinda bummed I didn't get to see the display/truck in person. I stopped by both booths on Monday and Tuesday morning - I'm guessing they didn't make it to the floor until yesterday afternoon?

Ah, that is a bummer! Sorry man. I actually have no idea, I just happened to see an Instagram story from @dabswellington this morning where he showed it in the Fronius booth, not sure when they put it out!

I ment to ask before and forgot. What size are those desk mats and what would one cost if you wanted a little side project? I could send you logo files and you could design a simple border or some fill-in around it?

Please put me on the list, too!

Here's a post for you guys since you were interested. I've posted on my Instagram that the desk mats are available for a small, limited release. Here is a link to the Instagram post with details if you're still interested and feel free to message me here or on IG.

I spent some time in Blender creating a little promotional render:

Hey guys, looks like it's been a couple of weeks since I've shared anything here. Nothing too major to report, pretty typical life stuff around here. I was able to fill the four openings for my first batch of desk mats in just over 24 hours, and I'm extremely grateful and honestly surprised by that. I love what I do, I can't understate that fact, but when other's show appreciation and especially monetary support for my work I can't help but be surprised for some reason. With that being said, thank you to the members here that reached out expressing interest in my desk mats!

Speaking of support from others, a customer that I've been working with for a little over a year sent me a very generous gift over the weekend. The first project I worked on for him was reverse engineering a set of his Hot Rod knuckles, of which the original part files were lost. He sent me an old piece that I used as reference to model in Fusion 360. He was stoked with how they came out, and has been manufacturing them for a while now. I did not expect him to send me a beautifully machined and patinated brass version that was even personalized with my name, but I am very grateful for it!

In response to receiving the knuckles, I decided to put together an Instagram post with some renderings I made in Blender and some photos I took with the fancy camera of the "paperweight". If you view it here on Instagram, the collage style of the photos makes a little more sense.

I'm currently chipping away at the desk mat orders and hope to have them all finished by the end of next week. Thanks for stopping by!

Interesting stuff you do, on the display piece for the truck what is the word next to your logo MM on the top of the stand?
Is it AKL Rd? :headscrat
Interesting is better than boring I suppose! The Squarebody Truck kits are a collaborative product between myself and Overkill Racing and Chassis. That's his logo, it says OVKL RC.

On Wednesday I performed my first LOF service on the Dakota. I don't drive the truck all that much - I'm 8 days away from one year of ownership and I've not quite driven 3,500 miles in that time. At this time I also changed the transmission oil as well as the front/rear differential oil. Everything went smoothly, and the only thing I found out of order was a chip in one of the teeth on the side gear of the rear diff:

I don't hear any noise coming from the rear end while driving and I have no way of knowing how long this has been present. I did find the missing chunk and some shavings on the magnet and I cleaned them out. Let me know what you guys think about running it like this.

While I had the differential covers and front skid plate off I also gave them a degrease and quick coat of black Rustoleum.

Since I had just performed a service, I figured it was about time I create an organized system for recording vehicle maintenance. I thought about using a physical note pad (similar to what Mike @zmotorsports kindly shared with me in this post last year) but being the digital nerd that I am I decided to use a spreadsheet on Google Sheets instead. That way I would be able to access the information at my computer or on my phone at anytime.

I thought I could just download an existing vehicle maintenance spreadsheet that someone else would have shared online, but a fairly lengthy search left me not satisfied with any of the available options, so I created my own. I'm not the best with spreadsheets, but using the tips that Mike shared in the post I linked above, I put together something that I think will work well for me.
Vehicle Info.png
Maint Log.png
Maint Sched.png

Without a doubt I'll be fine tuning this as time goes on and I make more entries, but I felt like this was a good start. I know that I do want to add a section in the Maintenance Log for keeping track of costs. The Maintenance Schedule intervals aren't necessarily set in stone either, I came up with them by referencing my FSM as well as searching forums to see what others are doing. Please chime in if you have any suggestions, and let me know if you'd like me to share the spreadsheet file that you could alter for your needs.

Big thanks to Mike @zmotorsports for sharing your system of tracking maintenance and for inspiring me to get organized in tracking mine!

Here's a recent project for my friend and customer Genuine Metalworks. He wanted me to come up with a holder for fixture table stops, here's what I ended up with! I had fun making it look cool and maybe you can tell what the aesthetics were heavily influenced by? They were 3D printed in Bambu PLA Metal on my XIC and they came out great. I tried something new with the textured parts and I'm very pleased with the results. These collage style photos make more sense on my Instagram post here.

That pretty quality is pretty damn impressive....awesome work!

Curious...without giving away any trade secrets...how did you model that pattern in the center? I can think of a couple different ways to do it...but not that experienced on if Fusion has some built in tools to make that easier?

Thanks a lot man - no secrets here! So the only thing different from a modeling perspective is that I made the textured areas one layer (.2mm) below the top surface, which is actually the bottom surface since they're printed upside down. The textured areas are separate bodies from the rest, so when I sliced them in Orcaslicer I turned off walls (perimeters) and bottom layers, leaving my infill pattern visible. The infill pattern I chose is Hilbert Curve and I set the density to 65%. Having the texture .2mm high in Z allows the filament to still stick to the build plate, but it doesn't squish as much, making it more pronounced and round than if I had not offset it. I tweaked a ton of slicer settings, but a lot of that was part specific here so not really worth getting into.

That's brilliant...never would've thought to have done it that way! Thanks for sharing both the method and more gorgeous prints of a Bambu helping slowly convert those of us who haven't ordered one yet :)

You're welcome. I love leaning into the unique capabilities of 3D printing to enhance a project. As far as the Bambu printer goes, I can't recommend them enough. @slodat and I were talking recently about how much better the X1C is than our Prusa mk3 machines. There's no doubt I'll be adding at least one more X1C and AMS combo in the not too distant future. So far I have 644 print hours on my X1C and the only work I've done to the printer has been standard cleaning and lubrication, which conveniently is tracked by the machine and notifies you automatically so you don't have to rely on your memory to do it.

Nice looking spreadsheet for vehicle maintenance tracking Austin.

Much better than my chicken scratched notes. If I were more ambitious, I could see that being a nice format.
Thank you Mike! My brain is so digitally oriented now, I felt like I would get more out of this spreadsheet than a notebook. Just say the word if you'd be interested in the spreadsheet, I'll gladly send it to you. By the way, what's your thoughts on that chipped gear tooth on the rear end?

As an Excel junkie, I love your vehicle document.

I use a similar file as well as a 3 ring binder for all records/receipts.
I'm very much a spreadsheet newbie, so I'm a little embarrassed to have an Excel junkie viewing my weak attempt!

Great spreadsheet! I have a more rudimentary one set up on Google Sheets, but I might steel some things from yours! I like the quick reference info. I've been meaning to print a 'cheat sheet' like that for our cars to keep in the garage.

Also, your 3D prints are looking *chef's kiss*
Thanks man! I'd be glad to share the file with you if that would help. I can't even take much credit for those 3D printed stop trays, that's just the stock Bambu filament profile for the most part, but thank you!

You can say that again!
I do my best!

Austin, by looking at the picture, it appears as though there is a lot of wear and the hardened finish may be gone or at least worn through. If it were me, I'd be tearing into it and replacing the side gears and spider gears as a set and looking very carefully at the ring & pinion gears for dings or depressions in the teeth. I would be willing to bet that small metal shavings and/or pieces have more than likely gone through the bearings at this point as at minimum I'd be cleaning and thoroughly inspecting bearings and more than likely replacing them as a set and a preventive measure to avoid a failure.

That may be a bit overkill and quite possibly nothing more could come of it, but that's what I would be doing.

I suspected that would be your response, thank you and I appreciate your insight. With the little that I drive and how easy I am on it, I'm going to let it ride for now until there's either a greater failure or my finances are such that it makes sense to fix. Hopefully the latter happens first...
