Signs and garage look nice. You should be proud. Are you near Keith? My grandfather was from there. He came over to the US in the 1910s as a young man.

Thanks again guys, I am pleased with the way the garage has turned out. I'm also glad it is finished as it was probably the toughest job I ever tackled, not just physically but mentally too.

I stay in Glasgow which is in the south west. Aberdeen is 160 miles to the north east on the coast and Keith 50 miles further north between Dufftown and Banff

Appologies for the size of the map, but had it been much smaller it would have been difficult to make out

Hi.

I live in NE England , am aware of sarking used in Scotland - a friend told me subject of Scottish Building Regs for housing - thermal insulation, his seemed to be a full 1" sawn thick. You will be aware in England - houses are built just using sarking felt & tanalised 2" x 1" battens. I have two brick / block double garage projects - these will be done with sarking timber under concrete tiles , mainly for safe access when tiling and better for security.

I don't know if the Scottish Planning & Building Regs are the same , providing you are not in a "Conservation" area (I am just outside) - you don't need to apply for anything providing the floor area is no greater than 30 m2 , apex height under 4m , eaves under 2.5m , within 1 m of your property (IIRC on your boundry providing flameproof materials) somewhere abt. 15ft off your house. If the curtilage of your property is sufficient - then you can have more sheds / garages providing you don't cover more than a certain percentage of your garded (IIRC 10%)

I decided to do a project IKEA flatpack , 18mm tanalised birch ply , the outside is to be finished with 18mm TG&V tanalised , 2" slab insulation then internal cladding of 18mm x 6" tanlised softwood (fencing boards) , 12mm sarking on roof , fake Welsh slates - the ply takes copper nails OK , the brick garages will have 22mm sarking ply and it takes galvanised tile nails OK.

Floor is just gratis reject bricks from a local brickworks (four layers of brick), I may put a 2" thick tanalised floor in later for better heat retention, there will be a interconnection to a small brick built bothy with a wood burning pot belly for a bit of winter heat.

Founds are only 9" hollows filled with concrete , more than adequate for sub-soil ground pressure.

I was working with an American from Mississippi who told me his great grandfather was from Edinburgh (east coast 50 miles from Glasgow). The great grandfather was caught cattle rustling and given the choice of going to jail in Scotland or going to America, so he chose America. I decided to look up his family name and it turned out it was part of the clan MacPhee who were well known for stealing cattle :thumbup:

That's a nice project you have there Outrigger, I can't remember the exact rules for building a garage here, but because of the size of mine I had no option but to obtain the correct permission first.

I won this Peugeot sign on ebay, it was 400 miles from me and pick-up only so I had to call in a few favours from mates down south to have it collected. 8 months later it arrived at my home. Well worth the wait

The Vauxhall sign came without any fittings so I had to bodge up a circle to mount it on the wall, then fit a light fitting to illuminate it. I'm happy with the results

Pretty sure I was outbid on that Brink sign a while back!

Just read the whole thread - great stuff! Regarding cattle-rustling, my mother's ancestors were well at it as well! They would apparently nip across the border into England and steal from the English!

What a captivating thread thank you so much for documenting your labour of love and sharing it with us!!! I just read the entire thread and was so inspired by the monumental amount of work. I didn't notice any mention of the trophy case in the garage. Please share your story, match fishing or athletics?

Thanks for the kind words, below are answers to your questions

Are you planning any heater installation?

I have a twin AC unit which provided heat and also a 15kw fan heater if extra heat is required

Pretty sure I was outbid on that Brink sign a while back!
...Regarding cattle-rustling, my mother's ancestors were well at it as well! They would apparently nip across the border into England and steal from the English!

The Brink sign was on a few times before I bid, I'm sure I was the only bidder for it, as for stealing cattle from the English...Perfectly legal once Alex Salmond wins the referendum ;)

...Where did you get your tiles ,they look like good quality. Are you happy with them ? I quite fancy something like that for my build if they were durable enough .

The tiles are from a company called Ecotile, great quality and well pleased with them. They've been down for a couple of years now and no issues whatever Ecotile website here

Sorry I missed this one last time.

The trophies are all awards for my 1947 Rover car, I bought her in 2003 when I was in Australia and had her shipped back to the UK and she's been in my possession ever since.

Nice to see a build in Glasgow, since that's where I'm from originally. Nice build, too.

Been a while since this thread has been active. This is very close to what I'm looking to build.

Do you have a spec for the roof pitch? And an overall height of the garage?
