That was a great repair on the truck!! I have had a few deer "visits" over the years, I think the highest priced one was $3,000.00 on a Honda Accord we had. My wife driving it, and her mom and our grandaughter in the back seat at the time. We never got all the fine pieces of windshield glass out of it. Gotta watch out but those suckers are fast!!

Best Regards
Herb

...In the past 6 months I have completed $9000 in education and upgrading to keep my credentials in top order, I find that being competitive means staying ahead of the pack. Another strategy of mine to stay making money is to be diverse in my career options.

I have a 2 year Environmental Diploma and I can always move back into that field if things are slow in the oil/gas/refinery business... One thing that is not going away is the Environmental industry and regulation sector, they are growing fast...

You are "wise beyond your years" Sean, it's always good to have a "plan B".

I have always planned to build a 4x4 winter beater but have never got around to it... This $500 Range rover fell onto my lap today, has the 4.6 L V8 that derived from the old 215 Buick engines. It does have a few electrical issues but nothing major it drives well. A small turbo sure would make things interesting!

That Rangie looks good Sean.

$500!!!! - Bob's right, you do ****.

Thanks, Leanne confirms I ****... She is upset I bought another vehicle but sometimes its easier to ask for forgiveness than asking for permission. The previous owner thought the head gasket was blown but when I got it home i found it was just a faulty thermostat! $10 fix no more overheating. :lol_hitti

HAH! I love those easy fixes like that, sadly for me it seems like it is normally the other way around. Congrats on the nice score.

I know it may just look like another car part but this is a HUGE step forward for me and my engine projects. This is a custom $3000 billet crankshaft that I had made, it is one of a kind and allows me to make mega power without engine failures. It took King Crankshafts out of Ohio a ton of time to create this crankshaft, it is a work of art.

What Herb said, Sean!

Do you see any problems with bearing speed on those huge mains, especially at the rpm levels you mention. I regularly hit 8K with my 331 SB Chevy, but it was a small journal crank and only 750 hp, no problems for me.

Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas!

Vieux that looks fantastic!!! Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you for the seasons greatings!

Well it has been a busy year and I am very thankful for the life I have... We are expecting another baby so that is another thing to be greatful for!

Sorry for the lack of actual garage progress pics this year, with any luck we will start the garage build at the little house. It will not be the huge dream shop at the acreage but looking at doing a smaller garage at the little house for now... I need something to store my 76 Regal in.

Hi Ric,

That is a good question... I know i personally have not had any issues with the main bearings and I have not heard of anyone that has. We have heard of rod bearing issues due to poor oiling. I plan to use an external belt driven oil pump and some oiling mods to the block to help with that..

In general i plan to keep the revs down on the setup, my turbos are sized nice and small for the street but not ideal for 8000 rpm...

I am currently completing the engine that i started back on page2 just waiting for a custom camshaft to get here. Will swap that into the car this winter. I was looking at dyno simulators while designing the cam and it does not look like revving over 6500 is going to make much more power due to the turbo size.

But as you know if I can make the power in lower rpms it will be more reliable.

Made some progress on the train set, still lots of work to do...

I decided this controller was far too ugly have visible so I rigged up a building to cover it up when not running the train:

Got started on the car junkyard, will do a dirt ground treatment and setup gravel roads around the layout. The pavement is almost done, just needs another coat of paint and need to fine tune the rail crossing a bit.

The drag strip is setup and looks good:

I still have some buildings I need to assemble, many of the buildings I placed on here for the pics will not be used in the final layout. I just wanted to put some buildings on and check out how it looks so far.

Thanks for looking I am having fun with this project and Shane loves watching the trains go around and around and smiles each time they come out of the mountain!

Sean:

I have returned! I got my wifi brewing at home and have caught up on your thread.

That model railroad set is making my very nostalgic! The one my dad built for me was N gauge, similar size piece of wood, and it folded up against the wall, too. I’ve already told you about the dark cork mountain tunnel he made, but what’s really freaking my bean right now is the backdrop poster you have on the wall. Is that Bryce Canyon in Utah? Because he put up a poster photo in the background, taller than yours, but a very similar view. He was from that part of UT so that was probably one reason he chose it.

For grass, he put some thin fuzzy stuff onto a layer of glue on the wood, so it had texture. I remember that very well.

Now, where in your mountain scene is the sasquatch? I went looking for some for you:

Wrong gauge, but I like it:

Race tire storage: in my little world of autox, some of us were **** about storing our race tires in thick trash bags, in hopes (possibly futile hopes) of keeping them soft and gummy. I don’t know if that’s an option with THOSE big things! But you’re in industry, maybe you know a source. Also, in my experience, the ladies hate the smell of tire rubber in the house. Not me… it’s the smell of victory!

I’m glad your skills are keeping your opportunities open in the hydrocarbon world. Now, do tell, how are they going to capture that carbon at that new facility? I’ve not kept up with that issue for a few years now.

$500 Range Rover – you ****? I don’t know. You might be back in a few months crying, IT *****! But I’m not sure. A lot of modern cars get given up on because of very minor things that today’s skill-less people can’t begin to fix.

Also, winter beater? I spent some time in the rust belt of the US, where road salt was a real pain. I got the impression where you are, it’s so cold that salt wouldn’t begin to work? A “salt car” was a normal thing in a place like upstate NY for the automotively handy. But I’m not sure what the appeal is in this case, since you have that modern truck.

But I will say this: a normal, factory suspension with soft springs and a normal center of gravity (just kidding, SUV’s centers of gravity are not normal, but, compared to your truck…) is a good, forgiving, predictable thing for normal day to day winter snow and slush use.

As for the wife being irked at the latest addiction to the fleet (whoops, I meant to type “addition”, Dr. Freud, white phone! Paging Dr. Freud!) I had a buddy who had to remind his wife, “When you met me, I was under a car!”

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the interest and for following and commenting on my shenanigans!

Thanks for the big foot idea, I like that!!

After getting the Rover I decided a few things:

1. The rovers are great in the snow and off road
2. The electrical issues were easy to fix it is now 100%
3. These are not reliable vehicles, based on other people's internet reviews and I looked a lot.
4. This SUV gets a lot of attention, people really like it... Ladies really like it...

So I am putting it up for sale for $4000 LOL!

I stumbled on these fiberglass body panels for a GM truck a few weeks ago... $50 for all of it. Original cost over $2000. Then found some engines for really really low $... 2 Chevy 350s, a Chevy 305, An Olds 307, Chevy 5.3 (selling with parts truck tmrw), and some other transmissions etc LOL... All for a few hundred bucks. All the engines are now safe in the shed, except the one parts engine with the snow on it.

And here is the 1983 Chevy 3/4 Ton truck I bought last night... The truck was parked at a gas station and the guy was trying to start it.... Gave him a boost, then swapped on another carb for him but it was way too flooded to start... Owner gave up on the truck and sold it to me for $200...

I will use the fiberglass panels to patch up any rust spots on the truck.

What he said Sean ... you seem to be quite a wheeler dealer, reminds me of myself up until 2-3 years ago and I just quit buying. Now I got a pasture full of 54-56 Buicks and a barn full of parts. So you best be getting started on that new garage build. ;)

Thanks guys for the interest. I was talking with a local builder about having him build me a garage this spring, and he will get me a quote when the snow melts. He lives about a 1 minute walk from my little house so it would be good for both of us.

For now I am going to hold off on building a big massive shop at the acreage because it would be tough to keep it secure with no one living there. Maybe in the future I will fence it, setup a rental trailer, and then build my dream shop.

But for now a more modest shop with a lift located beside the little house, will do the job.

That sounds like a good plan, Sean.

Again, like me... I've been "makin do" with the old barn and plannin to build my dream garage for twenty years, I sure hope it doesn't take that long for you. Me thinks you are just waitin for lil Shane Buick to be big enough to hold the other end of a board, and tha's ok too;)

Some progress:

If you are by yourself and you need to twist an engine on the hoist so it does not touch your truck while you drive away you can use a ratchet strap:

And then you can use some thick wood as a "sled" and slide the engines on the snow... Then use the lift again to get them moved around inside...

Can anyone guess what transmission is connected to the pic just above this typing?
