I continue to be extremely impressed with my LXT tools. I have more than in this picture but the addiction is obvious. The batteries blow me away. Mine are at least 4 years old and still last a long time. Overkill for homeowner grade but worth every penny. The 1/2" impact has saved my **** on the road with flats several times and the 3/8" impact driver is crazy powerful for construction purposes. I even use it on automotive apps on small fasteners.

I'm not sure if everyone on the board already knows this. But for people who don't already have a drill and impact driver yet, there are Makita specials running through August with Home Depot (online order only).

Drill/driver, impact driver, two batteries, chargers, and a free tool for $229 (+tax but free shipping).

Free 3.0 Ah battery
Free 4.5" angle grinder
Free reciprocating saw
Free 6.5" circular saw
Free job site radio

I chose the job site radio and am thoroughly impressed, this thing is awesome. Only downside is no Bluetooth connection (that models a bit more expensive). I'm not sure if it was an accident but they shipped me three batteries instead of two. As far as I know, that's not part of the deal. Maybe someone else can get lucky too.

The new 36V string trimmer looks good on paper. Anybody here have one?

I cut and pasted this from a previous post in another thread regarding my review of the Makita 18V x2 garden tools

***
I recently purchased the Makita 18V x2 (36V) trimmer, blower, chain saw and two port simultaneous fast charger. Very nice and it leverages the batteries I have for my Makita LXT 18V cordless tools. Run-time is more than adequate for all three tools. All have battery charge level indicators for each battery.

Several points on the tools:

Trimmer. Straight shaft. Nice balance. Brushless motor directly on top of the trimmer head. No flexible shaft to break or as a source of transmission energy lose. Two-speeds. Lower speed works fine for all but the most overgrown tasks. Reverse mode for easily clearing stuff that gets wrapped around the trimmer head. Reverse is very easy to use. Touch the reverse and then the trigger. Works one trigger pull, then automatically switches back to forward rotation.

Blower. Small, light and powerful enough for general tasks. Two-speed. It is not going to be pushing clumps of heavy wet leaves, but it is powerful enough. Nozzle is easy to remove for compact storage.

Chain saw. I have a Stihl, but it is bigger than required for most tasks and due to it's infrequent use, sometimes difficult to start. I appreciate the cordless chainsaw for several reasons; Instant on. Pull the trigger and it is on, let off the trigger and it is off. Often when doing yard work, I am turning the gas saw on and off, on and off, or sequencing my work in an sub-optimal sequence to keep the saw running. Quiet. Can be used earlier, later or closer to others without causing so much noise. You can easily make a quick cut or two next to a campfire after dark without disturbing others. Transport. No gas to carry around or worry about tipping over or smelling up the trunk. Comes with a Oregon brand chain. Blade tensioning is straightforward and tool free.

Two-port Fast Charger. Received free when I bought two Makita x2 tools online via Acme Tool. Charges two batteries quickly (2x 4.0A in 40 minutes, 2x 3.0A in 30 minutes) and simultaneously. Many multi-port chargers accept multiple batteries, but only charge one battery at a time.

I feel the Makita Outdoor tool line is very solid. If you have already bought into the Makita 18V LXT platform, it is a no brainer.ools

Thanks. I like my Honda trimmer but this is the breakthrough I've been waiting for to say goodbye to gas trimmers forever.

Yeah, the cordless pinners/nailers look great, made in Japan. The cordless backpack blower is really interesting too.

The 12v stuff isn't super exciting, I was hoping they'd make stuff significantly smaller than the 18v, similar to what Bosch has done. These 12v tools look pretty similar in size to the 18v, but with a smaller battery pack.

In Brazil, Makita is the brand that offer more options of corded and cordless tools.
Bosch and DeWALT together offer less models than Makita alone.
So, who wants quality tools, almost always has a lot of Makitas.

Re: ***** Makita Addiction Thread *****

After using many Makita corded tools over the years including a palm sander, D handle router, 1013 miter saw and several 9.6 volt screwguns, and having good luck with all of those, I took the plunge on the LXT line when it came out in 2005 with the 5 tool set (circus saw, recip saw, hammer/drill flashlight and impact gun). Looking back on it I must say overall I have been pretty disappointed. At the time the only Lithium ion sets that were out was Makita and v28 Milwaukee which was quite a bit more expensive.

Flashlight was dead out of the box. Replaced under warranty. Replacement was dead within a year. Seems they have a problem with the wiring between the head and the body of flashlight which leads to intermittent on off problems.

Circular saw and reciprocating saw still work but are way underpowered. Circular saw has always bound up so easy with lack of power. Used a Dewalt 12 volt nicad circular saw at work that blew the Makita away.

Hammer drill/driver (BHP451) Worked for occasional use for 3 years before transmission went out rendering drill dead. Turns out they used some plastic parts in transmission that wore out easy and had to redesign the new transmission with all metal. Problem is they want $61 plus shipping for the transmission plus $30 labor making it kind of impractical to fix when that is cost of a new drill.

Impact driver rocks. Plenty of power. Only complaint with impact is that gray trim piece fell off back when set was new. I fixed that with some 2 sided tape.

Set came with 2 3.0AH batteries(still work 10 years later) green charger, Makita bag and some accessories for the tools. Cost was 750 bucks on sale at home depot back then (2005). This set is homeowner use.

I needed to replace the drill and didn't want to start with another new battery platform again. So last Black Friday I had bought the 1 drill+ 1 impact, 2 more battery, black charger, blow molded case combo. They were running the 1 free bare tool or 1 free battery with any combo then so I grabbed another drill, making 2 new drills.

Both the new drills are 2 different model numbers. They are both smaller than the BHP451 and both have 2 speeds (451 had three speeds). Then I find out the new batteries won't work with the original tools.

Looking back I wish the Milwaukee m18 was around back then. I will see how these new tools hold up. If they don't I will be changing tool platforms once again.

I'm not sure an individual experience of cordless tools purchased over a decade ago has any relevance to the technology available today. Heck, the market is almost unrecognisable from that of just 3 years ago.

Milwaukee was **** back then too, probably shittier. The whole "RedLithium" moniker was created so they could tell their customers to buy new batteries since all the old ones failed. They all used the same cells that all failed, lithium ion was in it's infancy and they were all literally using laptop batteries.

I think I have at least a dozen red lithium batteries in m18 or m12 and I haven't had a problem with any...

Right. And take a wild guess why they needed to create RedLithium.....

Picked up a pair of 18V LXT 4.0 Ah batteries and they fit my older Makita power tools. Only time in the past when the batteries did not fit was when using "compact" batteries in the recip/circ saw. Filing off a small tab on the power tool allowed using compact batteries in a high draw power tool if needed

How old are your "older" Makita tools? Do they have the yellow or the star on them where the battery connects? I was wondering about this as Makita claims they will not work. I never thought to try them as I was afraid of messing something up.

Glad there is a Makita thread.

Had to drill 16 1/2" diameter holes in 1/2" cast iron plate tonight. Old faithful never let me down or hesitated. Great max trigger speed control setting. This sees all my heavy metal working uses from 1/8" all the way up to 2.5" tubing notching use. Just keeps going.

Also my "clean use" (aka no grease contact for interior work) recip saw.

I hope all of you are having better luck with your Makitas. I bought the brushless li ion set a couple months ago. Used heavily at work, the bit retainer came apart on the impact driver and now the drill is coming out of gear. In all fairness these replaced Milwaukee m18 non brushless which were also ****. I have since bought a Snap on monster lithium drill which has worked well but by they don't make an impact driver.
