That new top-handle saw looks really sweet. I have the 36v top handle and it's been great. My only complaints are that it's a little heavy, and the chain adjuster/tensioner feels sort of flimsy and cheap. This new model looks like it addresses both issues.

My newest Makita is crawling its way to me in Michigan by "Canadian post". Brand new old stock 9306 bench grinder. The few pictures below is all I have to go on at the moment. Seems information about the 9306 is nearly non-existent online. Which I hope means it is a very early 1990s Japanese made. The 200 watts output seems to say it is a 1/4hp. Will post more after I receive it.

That's very cool and awesome that it's made in Japan.

By luck and on ebay. I choose "US only" for location in my searches to help weed out the multitudes of chinese/hong kong (high quality and superior) made items. Also because even though there are excellent quality items to be found in Europe the shipping from over seas is a deal breaker. Unless the item is being shipped from china because some how they get to ship items to the states for less than it costs me to mail a postcard to someone in the states.

Happened to choose "North America" for location and found it in a Canadian auction.

That's very cool and awesome that it's made in Japan.

Sure looks cool. But it is only hopefully made in Japan. That hope is based on the small handful of pictures I was able to find online.

For all I know it could have been made in Bulgaria as a counter display and has no armature. Made for customers to spin the wheel while waiting for the sale dude to get off the phone with the person that called just as you were getting to the counter. Like those Lucas oil displays with the hand cranks.

Will know more on the 21st to 28th.

---------------------------------------------

Or I will know more on the 20th. It arrived.

It IS Japanese made and as old as 1982. Except a slightly twisted tool rest that I will be able to straighten easily it is gorgeous and pristine with original paperwork. I may really ****.

And the 1982 Makita Tool **** Magaz.. I mean brochure.

And if you take offense at the Made In USA Wright 1/4 drive socket holding down the middle of the first page for the photo shoot I can dig though my spares box and find a 90s Made In Japan socket and retake the picture.

I just got this planer. The guy owns a very cool tool store and he said he started with 12 of them and this was the last one. I got it for $375 can’t wait to take it for a test drive!

I just recently switched over from Dewalt to Makita. I love my new tools. I have the 18V Brushless subcompact drill and impact. I think they are more powerful than my 20V Dewalt were.

I've been looking recently on Offer-up, Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. I came across an add a few days ago and jumped at it!! I got a Makita 1/2 Brushless Impact Driver and two 3 hour batteries for $140! The thing looks brand new. She said her husband won them at a raffle.

Unruh, a quick favor please?

Can you shake that thing like a salt shaker?

Just grasp it in whichever hand you normally use, and shake it up and down.

That thing being the XWT08 pictured above.

I just bought one brand new, and when I shake it back and forth, it rattles inside. I don't know if it is normal or not, because I have no others to compare it to. I had to special order it. I don't want to return it if the rattle is normal, or a function of the anvils moving inside.

Thanks!

You guys might like this video I just did showing the XUC06. I was blown away, the video is true and I sold my Stihl MS201 after making it. Great saw!

Let's see:

On April 24, 2019, I post a 1,000 word write up and review on a freshly introduced Makita top handle brushless chainsaw. Revenue = zero.

Several months later, in July 2019, Silver puts up a video review, and in just a few days, no doubt assisted by promoting the video here, already has 4,000 views. I'm doing this all wrong!

And Silver doesn't even spell the model number correctly.

Of greater concern, in the video, he is demonstrating the use of one of the chainsaws in just about the most dangerous way one can use a chainsaw... holding the chainsaw in one hand, while holding the material that the chain saw is cutting in the other, within near proximity.

Why is that dangerous? Because the chain can grab, pull down the material, pulling the hand holding the material down with it, all within the blink of an eye at 4,750 feet per minute. In the case of Silver's video, his hand wasn't always that close, and the two by four he was cutting with the Stihl was likely clamped to something, as it was when he was cutting with the Makita, where he didn't have his hand in harms way, but that isn't seen with the Stihl cutting demonstration. What is visible is how people loose fingers, holding a small branch in one hand while cutting it with the chainsaw. Very bad practice. Very bad visual, especially for a video directed to DIY'ers who may not have the hands on experience to notice the detail and the difference.

And that is one of the reasons why Makita says "For Professional Use Only", as do other chainsaw manufacturers say on any of their light weight top handle chainsaws that can too easily be managed with one hand. The major risk in those is what uninformed people do with their other hand, since they don't need that hand to control the chainsaw. When they use that hand to grasp what they are cutting, as Silver did in his video, they may, one day, have less of that hand left, once that chain pinches the branch (more likely to happen with small diameter branches than 2x4s) and yanks down on it, yanking the hand down with it before the operator has time to let go.

Heck, that was another several hundred more words. I shoulda made this into a video, and gone around to all the forums dropping a link to promote it. Like Silver. Gettin' paid!

Bottom line, be very careful with that nimble little Makita XCU06. It is very small, very light, and ships with a high quality Oregon chain of Oregon's latest and most effective design. Wicked sharp too. This chainsaw is what the Samurai warriors wish they had.

Try to resist the temptation of holding the material you are cutting with your free hand when using a light top handle a chain saw, recognizing the chain's ability to act like a conveyor belt. A very FAST conveyor belt, one that you don't want drawing down your on your hand. If the material must be hand held, keep that hand as far away from the chainsaw as possible.

Giving up on Dewalt and favoring Makita over Milwaukee. Looking at this set. thoughts? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0160TRT7G/?tag=atomicindus08-20

This kit is an enigma... it shows Makita's most recent, latest design, and most powerful battery 18v Hammer Driver Drill (XPH07), coupled with one of their oldest, earliest, LXT series impact drivers (XDT01)... for more than $400.

This is why I don't buy kits. I bought everything a la carte, so I got

- the impact driver I wanted (the XDT16... the most powerful, and the smallest 1/4" impact driver Makita has ever produced),

- the hammer drill driver I wanted (the XPH07, same as what is included in above kit),

- the charger I wanted (the double rapid charger that charges two batteries simultaneously, not just sequentially, and not just the single charger)

- the batteries I wanted (6 amp hour, not 5 amp hour or even less with some kits.)

Combined with Makita promos and authorized dealer sales, such as buy three bare tools and get a free battery, the net overall pricing when buying the tool desired versus getting the tool included in some prepackaged kit is not that different.

The "savings" perceived in prepackaged kits is more often than not due to one or more of the tools included in the kit being an older, cheaper version of the tool that is no longer being manufactured as it has been superseded by improved versions.

Such is the case with the kit linked above. Searching the constituent tools within the kit individually, we find that the XDT01z has indeed been "discontinued" by the manufacturer (See Amazon Link and statement: https://www.amazon.com/Makita-XDT01Z-Lithium-Ion-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B00O2ZTD3E/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=xdt01z&qid=1566463300&s=hi&sr=1-2

Which impact driver would you rather have...

3 speeds, 5.5" body length, 1,400 inch pounds, single light, discontinued, priced at $211 individually

or

4 speeds, 4.5" body length, 1,600 inch pounds, twin lights, latest build, sealed ball bearing support at spindle, several other features like anti camout and other fastener control programs, priced at $177 individually?

I do not understand why anybody would ever spend money on a cordless "hammer drill".

Unless it's an SDS, the hammer function is next to useless.

Now an impact driver is a totally different story. The little makita BL brushless impact driver is a gem.

The double charger comes with many of the 18x2 kits. If I were starting out with Makita, I would go for an 18x2 tool - perhaps saw or chainsaw or circular saw - to get the batteries and charger - then buy the impact driver and drill as bare tools.

I almost never buy tools with the battery, or in kits, you can do better if you select what you want - and BTW - ignore all those torque figures they put out on tools - they are next to meaningless. Go try the tool and see if you like it.

Re: ***** Makita Addiction Thread *****

Care to share your reasoning on the track saw? I was researching the SP6000J1 but always hear how Festool is the best (I guess it is Snap On for woodworkers?)
I have both and use them both. Started with a Festo when they were the only one available, actually only had one dealer in the US at the time. Bought a newer Festool to get the anti splinter strip with the newer track style and other improvements. Added a Makita when I got a screaming deal on it at a Makita event. Think I paid $235. Upgraded the Festool again to get the improvements about 10 years ago. The Festool has again received some minor improvements in the current model. Prices on the Festool have gone a bit higher than can be justified in my opinion.
Makita got dedicated to a breakdown table where the cords and vace hose were supported above so the permanently attached and stupidly short power cord was less of an issue. Also being run by employees.
The Makita not having a riving knife makes it an issue on hardwoods but is fine for sheetgoods. The Makita only having the anti-splinter on the track side and not having another on the offside means you will only have one perfect edge. The offside anti-splinter can be a deal breaker.
Mafell has some advantages, particularly in the track for hauling around and connecting tracks to make longer ones. One dealer in the US and crazy prices. There is high prices and just insane prices.

Hardly.

Pilot drilling holes in concrete/masonry for 1/4" Tapcons... what SDS drill bits do you have that are 1/4" or less in diameter?

This is a repost but:

Cordless ratchet with interchangable 3/8" and 1/4" heads anyone?

I have something similar from Makita, but in 18V. I bought the 1/4" impact driver version, and then later picked up the 3/8" socket drive interchangeable head.

Were you able to place an order?

I got the item and the discount and all the freebies in my cart and proceeded through checkout. When I got to the final step and clicked on place order it timed out and took me back to the beginning. I've never ordered from International Tool so not sure what to do.

Looks like a great deal. Unfortunately that seller has a bunch of bad reviews. Not worth the gamble or frustration for me. If someone gets the deal and it actually arrives, post it up.

EDIT:

This is from Makitas website, so it looks like a legit deal (although the cooler doesnt show):

Didn't know that. I've seen them mentioned, in a positive light, in the Milwaukee thread and various tool channels on Youtube.

To the other user, I didn't order. Was just passing it along.

I appreciate you posting it. I think I'll wait & see if my local retailer has a Makita 20% off sale. If not I'll probably pick it up from Acme & bundle it with the free router. I emptied out my cart on International's site.

Someone in the Youtube comments mentioned their order went through. But they charged him $422 after taxes. That is from $344 shipped. I can't remember if it was International Tool but I've heard one retailer regularly messing up taxes and you have to correct them on it. Based on this it might have been International Tool. So if anyone orders, keep an eye on the taxes on your order.

Makitas website DOES list them as a participating dealer. Everything may be just fine with them. However they do have quite a few sources of negative feedback and bad customer service. FB, BBB, etc. And I do realize those have to be take with a grain of salt. Certainly not putting them in a bad light. But cautious none the less, especially with them including the cooler that’s not part of Makitas deal.

Makita air compressor here, no pics. I like the fact that you can buy parts for Makita stuff.

There is truth to this!

I recently bought parts for my 1988(?) Makita JR300V Recipro Saw. Broke one of the aluminum gear casings when it fell. Was surprised was still available. Cost of shipping was near the same as the part though..
